Title: Shawnee National Forest Quarter Launch
Post by: triplewitch on February 07, 2016, 01:54:44 AM
I attended the launch for the Shawnee National Forest quarter at Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg on February 4.  I took quite a few pictures, more of surroundings and personal friends than event happenings, but here they are:

As usual, the night before, the US Mint held a coin forum where those attending could question a Mint official about future, current and past programs as well as provide personal commentary on various topics. The people prominently pictured are personal friends:

On that same day I walked through the Garden of the Gods recreation area in the Shawnee National Forest.  This is a trail featuring spectacular rock formations, one of which, Camel Rock, is on the obverse of the Shawnee National Forest quarter. Another is called the Devil's Smokestack.  There's no numismatic content at this link, only scenery:

My next launch event will be for the Cumberland Gap quarter (Kentucky) in April.

Great to see that the kids outnumbered the adults at a coin event :good:

Gee that must have been a great walk, not a soul around & no snow on the ground.
Can't wait for the next batch of quarters to come out.
Do you know if they are going to substitute the code talkers dollar for the presidential dollars?

I'm not sure what you mean. The code talkers dollar is part of the  Native American Dollar program which has been ongoing from 2000, and there is already a coin from all three mints included each year in the uncirculated and proof sets.  There's no indication that this will change.
The US Mint spokesman, Mr. Biddle, said that there has been no decision on a replacement program for the Presidential Dollars after 2016. A replacement program would have to be authorized by our Congress.
It was a great walk.  It's about one-quarter mile through some spectacular rock formations. We're having an unusually mild winter here in the Midwest this year.
