Title: One Dollar Johnston-Stone Macleans Moneymint giveaway
Post by: jrg_from_oz on January 31, 2016, 04:50:41 PM
Today I came across a small paper envelope containing three CFU one dollar notes. It appears to have been some sort of giveaway run by Macleans the toothpaste people.

This is the front of the envelope. The reverse is blank.

Inside is this note:

together with these CFU notes:

Does anyone have any information on this giveaway, particularly when it occurred (google is no help), and is the "package" likely to add to the value of the notes?

They look like very good condition notes and a consecutive pair too.
I have never heard of this promotion but await, with interest, any further information.
I would think the package would add something (how much?, no idea) as provenance is often important.

I haven't seen that before. I would run it by Mick Vort-Ronald see if he knows. It may be in one of his banknote books.

MV-R considers it to be a private promotion at the time. It was previously not known to him.

Macleans (and their parent GlaxoSmithKline) don't want any interaction with the public in Australia unless it's by post. Still trying to get through the maze.

Phoned GSK today. They don't have an archives department, and marketing had no idea what I was talking about. Probably no-one left there from 33+ years ago.

The trail is getting very cold.

I'm really surprised that I have no memory of that promotion and that no one else appears to have either.

$600,000 was a huge amount of money back then and with $3 prizes (that and higher I'm guessing) there could have been an awful lot of winners.

I think you've got quite the curio there Jrg.

Where's McDuck, he might remember it?
