Title: Alloy problem?
Post by: SirDave on November 30, 2015, 10:04:20 PM
Has anyone seen this type of issue before? looks like the alloy isn't quite right? I have heard about this but had't seen it. Can't see any sign of pmd.

The discolouration seems similar to some types of copper toning.

Not sure, but it looks like it has come into contact with some high heat in that area.

Love that name, I agree with all the above statements.

No argument from me either.   100% agree with contact with a high heat source.

This is what you get when the missus forgets to check the pockets before incinerating your corpse. ;)

I was wondering about heat. Sounds like it's likely. Coin looks remarkably good though and the discolouration only shows up in certain light. I might try an experiment with some coins and a flame.

If the cause is from oxytorchitis I reckon it wasn't deliberate. Who would intentionally attack a coin in that way and just singe the edge? But I have seen a few instances where the odd person has been set alight accidently on purpose by the gas axe, and maybe there was a coin in their pocket

I normally carry my marking chalk in my pocket when I have to use an oxy torch or doing some welding  .
I have often grabbed a couple of coins out of my pocket and dumped them on the workbench when I go for the chalk.
it is not unforeseeable that a coin may cop a glancing blow from the torch or get a white hot lump of metal dumped on it with this scenario.

I was thinking of this when I came up with the " oxytorchitis " description :ok:
