I work for a woman who instructs me in the art of cooking, cleaning, gardening, and other duties.!! Luckily each morning I find a "to do list" so I don't even have to make any decisions!! If I get caught with a table full of coins, 2x2's and various other stuff I simply state that I am "Studying"

I am currently a casual employee at the ATO, my old man has worked there 30 years as well.

I did a stint at Centrelink when Qld flooded a few years back to help process the emergency payments.

Other than a little work there and setting up a bit of an ebay store im a full time university student.

I'm a database administrator, on DB2 on z/OS (Mainframe) for a large australian retailer.
Picked all my skills up on the job, and I really enjoy working on the mainframe, its nice to have that much process power at your fingertips :)

I'd love to do something like that but not sure if I'm computer smart enough - we have a huge data base where I work and I've liked using it from day 1 and at work i'm about the only person who i've met who enjoys using it! I'd love to get behind the system and work with it! I'm jealous

One thing i've noticed over the last 12 years I have been working in an IT position, is that plain old common sense is about 90% of the job.
If you understand what you're looking at, the computer side of it is easy.
You should go for it!

I went to a user group for DB2 a few months back and one of the talks was about 'big data' and it was very interesting.

I am a mechanical engineer but I quit that 6 years ago to make a full-time go at being a full time internet entrepreneur thingy.  It's been OK and most mornings I go to work in my pyjamas so I cannot complain.  Not having a boss (other than PPH of course) makes it a bit scary at times because it all rests on my shoulders.  But when things get scary I just go put my pyjamas back on and things feel better again.

Hi Kel - I get shy and uncomfortable meeting people in my private life. That is one reason why I never do 'pick-up' with ebay sales. And as well, it gets to be a hassle organising times, venues etc. cheers rob

C/C++ and Python at the moment. The last job was all Java.

Are you using COBOL for legacy reasons? I got the impression it didn't have widespread use these days (at least beyond systems written decades ago).

Today one of the staff at our local Bunnings tried to charge me rent for the spot I was standing on because I've been spending so much time in the wood screw / nuts and bolts aisle over the last week.

They did not, you just like it there because of the industrial air conditioner (top of 44 deg today -the air con and the solar panels are fighting it out!)

They did so.  At one point I'd been standing still so long a staff member put witches hats around me so the floor sweeper wouldn't run me over.

Pretty much.
It is still very widely used and probably accounts for a lot of code still running production across the world, and to me it best suits the processing it is used for in our shop.
In any case my opinion is that the quality of applications does not rely on what code its written in, mostly because good coders cost too much!

I recall reading something along the lines of this once :
Obsolete computer hardware sits in a musuem
Obsolete computer software runs production :)

Yeah I thought so. Someone said to me once a lot of bank back-end stuff was in COBOL because that's what it had always been.
I guess it's not quite obsolete if it works.
