Title: 2 Shilling Varieties
Post by: Nevol on November 26, 2015, 09:30:11 AM
RE 2 Shillings - 1946 Variety.

More specifically it's the size and shape of the 'loop' of the 6, look carefully at the difference in shape in this comparison.

2S 1946 Small v Large Date: Top = Small Loop; Bottom = Large Loop.

I remember someone once saying that the big six font was actually an inverted 9. Never thought much more about it since but was looking at a 1939 florin this morning on ebay and it hit me like a ton of bricks.....the second 9 which is different to the first, is in my opinion a perfect match for the inverted big six of the 1946 florin.

Don't know why the pic disappeared, but it's back with another for comparison

OK, so here's the bottom 9 rotated and overlaid on both 6's, as well as the top 9, for scaling.

Apart from the minor size difference, you can clearly see its a match.

The correct name would therefore appear to be 'inverted 9 variety', rather than 'small loop', no?

From what Fulvio has shown, the normal (small) 6 of the 1946 florin is a match for the 9 in that date, and when looking at the two pics eventually posted :dash1: in my previous post, the second 9 of the 1939 florin looks to be a match for the big 6 of the 1946 florin.

Question....was the big loop 9 font ever used for the first 9 on any coin in the florin series.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they would have assembled the date out of individual digits, kind of like letterpress, no? Which would mean someone picked up the wrong slug, or put it back in the wrong bin. 6's and 9's are easily confused, after all.

That would indicate that any date pre-computers could have this type of variety. Just a matter of documenting which ones occurred I guess.

True....I was just being lazy. Easier to ask the question than investigate :)
