So, the Royal Mint is issuing Proof Sovereigns with a once-off 90th birthday obverse.
£360, £190 and £110 for the full, half and quarter respectively, with mintages of 7,500, 2,000 and 1,750.
I'm really in two minds about these...
Beautiful coins, no doubt. And you can't fault RM's quality. But are they just more granny bait, or truly historically significant? And are they likely to at least hold their value?
Thoughts?
I WOULD THINK THAT WOULD DEPEND ON THE AMOUNT OF GOLD THAT EACH COIN IS MADE UP FROM.
I WOULD THINGK WITH GOLD AT SUCH A PRICE THAT IT IS TODAY, THEN ONE IS GROSSLY OVERPAYING AND VERY LITTLE CHANCE OF GETTING ONES MONEY BACK UNLESS GOLD SKYROCKETS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
Damn caps lock................

Sovs are all the same: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_(British_coin)
Factor in a premium for Proof quality, packaging, and what looks like an extra 25 quid premium for the 'special' nature of them compared to prior years.
If memory serves, aussie sovs are generally around the $500 mark, aren't they? Circulating coins, not proofs, obviously. What are pommie sovs worth?
The Indian ones recently manufactured are selling very strongly. Otherwise I think they sell them too far above the prevailing bullion prices of the day.
Pommie Sovs no way will they get into my collection.
Aussie ones yes. If only I could afford them.
I have 23 of them to date and am a lot short of a full set.

I wonder if that's the indian obsession with gold? They even eat the stuff!
(ewww... I just had a mental image of panning for gold at the treatment works...) :diablo:

The Indians are very precious metal friendly, gold in particular. The primary reasons behind this are due to both government policy as well as current and previous economic conditions (government quotas on gold imports being one.)
