Title: Man on the Moon
Post by: Coiny Chris on November 03, 2015, 08:55:32 AM
Hello,

Last night, Myth-busters did a special about the Moon stuff, and Apollo 13 was on later. Now MB do Adds, so they are available for " hire " And they have been wrong. I am sure there have been robots on the Moon, still not absolutely certain that Men were there. Why dont we keep going back ? What are your thoughts ?

The film later had one thing that stuck out to me, Green 7 segment LED displays. They could have been available if money was no object, but I dont think they were invented then. Nixie tubes is what I would have thought would be used. I had a look at Movie Mistakes, and no mention of that.

Probably cost too much to continue with the Apollo missions and they were fighting the Vietnam war at the
same time and of course war was more important.Nothing more to prove although the  story goes that
they found Aliens on the dark side of the moon .There was also an oil crisis in 1973 which shifted their
priorities .The Skylab program also began in 1973 and it was also the start of the deployment of robotic probes etc
so plenty of reasons for the change in direction

The first LED readouts started appearing on calculators in 1972 having been only developed in the previous year -I think all the early ones were red.
Prior to that fluorescent displays were common and usually green or blue.
So, if Apollo 11 had green displays they would have been fluorescent.

Hello,

The displays shown were LED, and not Flouro. I reckon they were used for ease of making the sets. Other stuff didnt look right, but it is a Film and making everything authentic can be very costly. In those days, the circuits may have been all discrete component, or the DTL / TTL families. I will have to have a look at Tid next time I am out that way. We only have one of our three tracking stations left.

Sorry Coiny Chris, I've got little time for people who question whether or not man landed on the moon.  It's conspiracy theory for the sake of it with no legitimate proof whatsoever.  An extremely cursory browse of Google shows that the green displays on the Apollo 11 guidance computers were electroluminescent and green.  A technology that has been well known since the 1940's.

That's nuts.  This thread is going to get closed, I don't want this rubbish on this forum.

The Apollo missions landed on the Moon. There is no credible scientific doubt about this. The descent stages, rovers and other artifacts left by the Apollo missions on the surface are all visible in satellite images of the Moon taken in more recent years.

"We", meaning mankind, didn't go back to the Moon after 1972 because, well, it's a pretty boring place. There's nothing there that you can't get far cheaper here on Earth or in low Earth orbit, so there's no particular reason to go there. And until we have a valid reason (such as, a plan to use the Moon as a base for launching manned missions to Mars and the outer planets) we probably won't be going back.

Some countries, of course, are planning new moon missions, mainly as a national pride thing (eg. China). There's also corporate efforts, such as the Lunar XPrize teams, trying to get there on the cheap using robots.
