Title: fake 1938 Crown
Post by: trout on October 23, 2015, 10:53:44 PM
The weight and measurements for this coin are pretty much spot on, it weighs 28.1g.
The colour had me bothered so I did some destructive testing on this and it is a plated forgery.
Here are the images of the reeded edge to show the plating after I gave it a bit of a  flogging with a steel brush.

That's a shocker Trout, where did you pick that up?

Do you have any obv/rev pics as I'd love to try and pick a die marker.

Oh, afterthought, any chance of a pic side by side with a genuine so we can see the odd colouring that set your thinking?

PS: Good to see that the Troutshed Mint is still in operation, wire brush and all.

Yeah would be good to see some obv/rev images if possible. Counterfeiting to deceive collectors disgusts me.

Mrs Trout is in hospital with that damned flue.
I am waiting for her to get back from X ray.
I will take some images when i get home :ok:

Gee Trout sorry to hear, I hope she gets rid of it quickly.

Back when Auto's family and my family had it back a few months ago, it was a shocker. I'd much prefer eye operations compared to what it did to me this year. I've never had anything like it!

This is by far the worst flue I have ever had by a long shot.

Back on topic :ok:
Here are the images of the coin .

I have got in touch with the seller and Shane Williams name was mentioned as to have checked this coin out and the seller seems to think that he is associated with PCGS :dash1:

doesn't look like a fake to me
the '38's are often die filled on the high points

hope that wife-ie gets better Trout
hope it's not that B strain - they reckoned it was going to be a nasty one - hence they changed the vaccine formulae

MACCAS has them at 28.26 GRAMS
so is .26g under a lot to be down?

I have found that the 1938 can vary considerably in appearance
pity about it being a fake as i'd think it was genuine from the photo

I have a 1937 crown that I bought as the real deal but I reckon it is fake - i'll find my pics - the surface is rough but the weight is right I think .. i'll find it

I put your pics Jim with a pic of one of mine - a genuine one
looks ok ísh
damn good fake - just looks to have die fill and rough treatment

I have absolutely NO intention of selling this :ok:

This does look like a genuine coin but it IS a plated replica.
Beware :ok:

Can you have it XRF tested where the plating is coming away just to be sure? The bullion dealers would have a XRF scanner.

Why would I bother to do this Eric??
If it is plated then in my book that =Dodgy, I also forgot to mention that this also fails the "ring test  :ok:

the hubby uses the ring test on his 8 reales

just a thought - do people plate old coins to make them look newer by any chance?

I haven't heard of that being done, but having them Gold plated isn't an uncommon thing.

Yes all is good :)
I bought 2 of these from the same seller and the other one looked just fine and about a AU55/58 coin.
I sent it to PCGS and it is in the same submission as your penny's, I will find out in a few weeks how that one goes :ok:

All is good Eric, It would involve a trip to Perth 1000k there and back to have this tested.
I did a "Ring Test" against another crown and the sound was totally different :ok:

RG I would bet you a real 1937 crown that your crown is real and the reverse has been left sitting in acid.

cool
I like that opinion
thanks Mark

I also did wonder if it was a lower pressure strike particularly on the reverse

I have a couple of other questionable coins ..... should start a thread!!

Personally I think the orange peel effect and the halo around the legends is a dead giveaway of an acid treated coin.  I am not sure how reactive silver is with acid but your coin certainly looks like other acid treated coins I've seen.
