One of the oldest dealers in the country might be forced to close:

the other effects of this type of build is that the businesses that remain also can lose out badly
my brother had a shop in brizzy and when the main road was being rebuilt customers had an awkwardly long trail to park a fair distance away and then navigate roadside works to get to the shop
his business went belly up and he had to close the doors
wasn't even able to sell

similar problem for Peter Stritch with the new owners of the arcade that his shop was in
making way for business 'progress'

the local coin shop here as I understand it also has to move as the building is being refurbished for other businesses, and Ed is already making the moves to accommodate that - but it means the ACT will no longer have a local coin shop as he has opened the second & new Edlins' doors in Yass (NSW and a 45 minute drive form Canberra)

see it pays to be an internet based coin dealer !

Yeah, it was on the news last night.

But there are a lot of affected properties, and there will be compensation. Whether he wants to relocate is another matter though... not a spring chicken anymore... ;)

Shouldn't in this case. It will be a similar build to what MURLA pulled off with the loop. The tunnels are a long way down, and the affected properties are where the stations are being built. There won't be off-site disruptions, any more than with any other CBD building site.

Maybe, according to news this morning, there may be a about face on Max's shop as they have found a new way to do the building of the rail link.

Anyway, why have an underground station where max's shop is now when 100 metres away id Flinders Street Station.

Id Max does have to close, that would be the third coin shop that has closed or moved in a very short period of time.  IE Peter Strict retiring to Brisbane, Diownies relocation to the other side of the river and now Max Stern.

Because Flinders St is at surface level, and at 90° to the new line. And its on the river. Have you forgotten what an engineering nightmare the riverfront construction was at Southbank? And they didn't go anywhere this deep. Keep in mind the tunnels need to pass below the impervious layer under the Yarra.

Besides, the surface footprint of any station, while small, is still big enough that there aren't a lot of places to put it. Imagine closing down Swanston/Flinders St to dig up the intersection and build it? Or demolishing the station facade or maybe the cathedral? And keep in mind there's fresh air under Fed Square... ;)
