Title: HELP WANTED: cheap 34/35 florin gap filler
Post by: ausjack on December 28, 2012, 10:37:41 AM
Hey team,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with or know where I could get a cheap 34/35 florin (a gap filler) to finish my type set, trout suggested I get one of the master set ones but after looking at them I think it would look a bit funny to have such a shinny coin as it would look out of place and if any thing detract from the look of the set. So I think I'd prefer it to fit in or maybe even leave it blank but having a hole is very annoying.

Thanks for any thoughts :)

A cheap one will set you back $300-$500 for one of these horrors.

Looks like something the mob at the Sydney gay festival would wear as a badge.

A naked bloke on a horse carrying a bunch of sparklers has absolutely nothing to do with the Centenary of Melbourne.
After George Kruger Gray's fantastic Canberra florin was such a success I have no idea what he was thinking when he designed this awful coin.
No wonder they melted 21,000 of them down

That might be why William Leslie Bowles got the 51 and 54. But I'm with you trout..what was he thinking, but better still what was the bloody gov and mint thinking to let it go..that also might be why they only made around 750k :dontknow:

Defiantly not worth the expense or hassle mate.
They minted 75,000 and melted 21,000, that’s how unpopular they were.
The ONLY reason people want them now is because of their rarity and not their beauty in my opinion.
Tell you what, How about I send you an AU58/ MS Canberra florin to put in that hole instead :good:

$400 gets you an UNC at auction if you have a good enough eye (beware as most have been harshly cleaned). Unfortunately they don't get too much cheaper, $150 is probably the cheapest you'll get one in today's market and that'll probably be polished up and ex-mount.

I feel your pain, I would like one to complete my Florin album and another to complete my "Type" album. I know they are not the best design but the two spaces are a constant reminder.!

Why not simply get one of these and display the obverse (It's the same) whith a better design on the reverse anyway :good:

I like the design and think it's spectacular - nude people appear on thousands of coins and have been depicted that way for hundreds of years.

Got this from the Aussie coin collecting blogg

"The reverse featured a horse and rider by George Kruger Gray, known also for his design on the ramshead shilling, coat of arms florin and the crown. The design signified the centenary of settlement in Victoria. The horse represented the major mode of transportation throughout the previous 100 years (1834-1935) and show it was a major contributor to exploration, settlement, cultivation and industry in Victoria. The horses front foot is raised indicating a limitless future to the growth and prosperity of Victoria. The nude rider, a young Victorian gentleman grown to manhood indicating a strong future for the state. The torch he bears symbolises progress and enlightenment."

Great ecuse for a lousy design IMHO.
Nobody in their right mind would ride a horse through the streets of Melbourne in the mid 30's naked carrying a torch.
In that era VIC and NSW was the main suppler of high quality wool to the World and a huge input finacialy to the Australian coffers a depiction of this industry would have been far more significant and accepted Design than MR Godiva with sparklers :good:
I am not "Arty farty" but to me this design is more "Farty" than "Arty":yahoo:

When did the Ram show up on the shilling? That certainly symbolised the wool industry and is a great design too.[/i]

The first one appeared on the 1938 shilling, 3 years later.
Would have been an Outstanding design  on the Centenary florin Ay:yahoo:
I would dare to say the the Ram's head design is as good as the Canberra florin design is as far as being Totaly Australian and apreciated by all :good:

Thanks for that. Yes, I am not really a decimal collector but I did collect most of the RAM one dollar coins, the silver edition and the tiny gold coin as it was always and still is, a fav with me. Cheers Rob

Do that and you will have the wrong obverse as well as the wrong reverse.
The Percy Metcalf Obverse design on the 34/35 MC is unique.
The Crown on the Australian Coin is different.
The Legend Font and placement is different.

The Mauritious 1 Rupee is probably the closest
just a little larger at 30mm dia.

Yeah I agree FP 'cause if you look at just the cross and orb on top of the crown is enough with out going into the poor strick on the others or any thing else. But ya bloody had me trout, I've been to the hole and found my kiwi and pom florin and neither are much good as the pom is 1932 and he doesn't have a crown and the kiwi has the queen so I missed out again :dash1:

Thanks heaps for the pic and pointing that out FP and thanks for the thought trout appreciate all efforts :good:

I'm amazed at how much they look alike but then so different..very strange

Nice comparison there Fordprefect. George V also has a much more pointed nose on the Centenary florin.

Yeah - and did you spot the medal on the chain hanging over the shoulder? On the 34/5 it's a star but the NZ & Fiji seems to be something different? Or certainly not as clearly struck? The outter edge of the same medal sits (NZ& Fiji) sits right on the rim as well, as do the corners of the shoulder ribbon.

Yeah I thought that the medal looked a little different. I just looked at a New Zealand half crown and it is a flower with five petals. It looks similar to the Centenary florin medal but inverted.
The crown above the cross on the King's chest is also different: on the Centenary florin there is a bar with two gaps on each side but on the New Zealand portrait there are half bars in the gaps.
