New thread to discuss the 2000 Incuse 50c
:wavemulticolor:
Go for it :)
Quite a few uncirculated coins have become available this year and I know one out
of a roll sold on facebook a couple of weeks ago for $400.Photos were sh##house so
the coin didn't realise it's potential but the seller got another 3 out of the roll and was
going to get them slabbed before selling 1 or 2 so stay tuned
$400 is a fair price for a genuine unc grade.
An MS grade would definitely be worth slabbing with no hesitation
you still haven't told me what you collect runway
I received my slabbed APGS MS64 Incuse 50c today,very happy :)

PCGS or APCGS , There is more than a subtle difference in the qualifications of these 2 grading companies ???
Yes indeed Trout ... glad you're onto it :) well spotted
PCGS 100% professional service ... APCGS is not a service I would use

What relevance is that to this topic?
PCGS have graded 73 Incuse (PCGS #525195) and 46 Regular (PCGS #114403):

That is quite a lot of coins since I had the first of these designated as such back in January 2014 :good:

Some of those MS graded incused coins are not incused and are in fact the standard issue as PCGS labelled some of them incorrectly as I was informed some time ago by Peter Andrews. They got them mixed up and it would be interesting to know how many UNC incused coins have actually been graded but I fear that information will be impossible to uncover
This is one of the coins that I have been concentrating on for the last few years and they are not easy to find in high grade at the right price.I bought all of these as raw coins and sent them over and have another 3 to go so taking into account the incorrect PCGS population this lot is a fair chunk of what has been graded.I must be a bit obsessive

No way Stevo, it wouldn't happen. I'm sure that there is not a 1971 20c piece that would think you are obsessive. :mocking:
btw: A lovely bunting!!

Ha Ha yes you are probably right Uni but the fact is 1971 20 cent coins in high grade a far easier to find

That link seems to give the number of incuse flag coins as 16,600,000
I think is generally accepted that the most that would have been made is around 200,000

:i_agree: Yes Oz, I think PCGS just goes by the rule of thumb (being the maximum about that 'could' exist .... in other words the total combined 2000 50c mintage for both incused and normal) until such times as a lower mintage for either can be substantiated.
There could still be some that haven't been reholdered perhaps.

Did mark end up getting his MS64 coin reholdered ?
Holy crap Stevo, very nice mate, puts my 3 xAU50, 2x AU53 and 2x AU55 to shame but I have 3 or 4 more to do but might/hope to get at least another AU55, mind you have given a couple of raw one's away and gave a mate slabbed one
Now that these are a well recognised "Variety" and not an error coin I imagine that most 50cent collectors will require one for their sets.
The only way for the values of these to go is upwards I would think :good:
That's what I'm hoping for cobba :good:
These are one of my favourite coins. I still think they are underrated but this may change it the future as they become harder to find in circulation. I'm still finding these around every $3000 searched but of course the quality is getting worse!

That's why I'm buying up anything that might grade AU55 or better now
Year 2000 certainly had 2 great coins the incuse 50 and mule $1
16 years old now and near impossible to find in circulation in collectable grade
Excuse the bump but does anyone know when it was first discovered and where it was first publicised? Were there any articles in the Australian Coin Review or Coin and Banknote Magazine at the time?
My understanding is that the $1/10c mule was discovered sometime between 2002 and 2004, and the 50c incuse flag variety was discovered by a Toowoomba collector in 2006. I think there was an article in one of the coin magazines in June 2006, but I don't have any of those issues, so I can't confirm this.

I'm almost up to $4000 now and still haven't found one. I'm even beginning to question whether they really exist. :dontknow:
Yes you're right, p13-14 of June 2006. Anyone know of any other follow-up articles?
How many 2000 50c pieces have you looked at Hercules? I've found one and it was the 90th one I looked at since I started counting (though I'd looked at a few before that).
I'm pretty sure a gent by the name of Drew Jackson or mad budgie discovered the incused 50 cent. It was confirmed, from memory now, by Jon Saxton, and either Pra and/or cobwebs, but not 100% sure about the last bit.

I've noodled 116 of the millennium ones. I checked most of them for thick lettering, of which I found 3, and for doubling on the reverse, of which I found one, but the incuse flag still continues to elude me. :(
These have been pulled from circulation by collectors for over a decade now and are getting harder to find also finding one in halfway decent condition from circulation now is a pretty big call after 17 years of rattling about in peoples pocket change.
I do think that there are still many of these incused 50c still "In the Wild", It's just that they are getting thinner on the ground now :ok:
The other thing to remember is the Olympics were on as well, so how many went back overseas and are sitting in the foreign change jar.

Keep going Hercules, you WILL find one, but they are difficult.

Thanks, Ozcoins. I'm pretty sure I will find one, even if it takes a few more years. What I'm most concerned about is the Wavy 20c. After 50 years of circulation, I'm sure there can't be too many left, especially in the higher grades.

It would be interesting to know just how many $1/10c mules went overseas during the Sydney Olympics, but seeing that they were released in Perth, I think the number would be negligible. Has anyone tried to figure out where the incuse flag coins were released, or is this too difficult considering the late discovery of them? Does anyone know where the wavy 20c coins were released, or was this not documented at the time?

Thanks - I found http://web.archive.org/web/20091015085125/http://members.optusnet.com.au/~ihartshorn/feature/fb4.htm but there aren't many details.
Thanks for the link, :)
