Title: Never rains but it pours .............. and it's still raining!
Post by: Unicorn on September 15, 2015, 06:32:56 PM
My bad eye (cataract one) seemed to have a blurred blackish intrusion in my usual blur over the weekend so I was a bit worried about a detached retina in that one now, so I went to the eye doc yesterday. He was on hols, but the locum was a lady who also works for my eye specialist. She freaked out when she saw my cataract as it's so, how would you say ...... large. The fact that it was also white instead of the standard yellow also had her shocked. (She hadn't seen a white one since she left South Africa some time back). Anyhow she couldn't see past the cataract, so, she felt it best for me to see my specialist. She got me in pronto at 3:30 this arvo. My specialist took about 1 minute to confirm that yes it's detached ....... so I'm off to Sydney Eye Hospital ...... pronto. I'm apparently getting operated on tomorrow afternoon so I have to get there early tomorrow morning. Fortunately the train from Taree will get me there around 7:00am.

So you will have the pleasure of my absence for a few days .... egad people will be able to post stuff without my rot.

Best wishes.
There is some experience in our family with similar problems -and probably has a genetic basis.
I have to have regular eye checks because of high probability of having a similar problem.

PS. Eye problems do not preclude posting bad (and sometimes very good) puns.

Just another thank you to everyone for the well wishes.

I had surgery on Wednesday night which took a bit over 2 hours as they had to remove the cataract (to do a lense replacement) before the doing retina as the cataract was so large and dense they couldn't see through it at all. What an exhausting day. I must have been seen by a dozen people from 8:00am when the hospital opened before I finally got wheeled in for the op around 4:45pm. All credits to Sydney Eye Hospital for getting me through it with the huge number of people that they already had in for booked ops on the day.

So the good news is that my cataract surgery is done as well as the retina. Fingers crossed now.

I got discharged yesterday morning and got the train back to Taree arriving back last night. The lovely lady at NSW trainlink put me in a seat that had one vacant next to it so I could lay on my side all the way back.

I now have to lay on my right side for the next 5 days while the gas in my eye get replaced with eye fluid. (McDuck I now have a pair of green wrist bands!!).

I just got up to have something to eat and thought I'd give an update.

The eye is a pretty sorry sight with all the family cringing when I open it. (An extreme amount of redness and some bleeding).

I can't wait to catch up on all the posts I see that I haven't read, but I have to go back to the bed as it still hurts quite a bit moving the eye around reading with the other as you'd expect.

Thanks again for the well wishes, they certainly brought me a pleasing result.

Good stuff Uni, take it easy.
Had both eyes (Lens Replacement) done in 2010.
Takes a while but the end result was brilliant.
It took probably 6 months for tiny black specks to be absorbed in the eyeballs,
so don't be concerned if you see little floaters hanging around.

Sounds like a good result with the eye -just a bit of time will probably show continual improvement.
Now, when are you booked in for the pun upgrade operation? (Just kidding -keep it up.)

Well, I went to my specialist today for a post op checkover.

The preliminary work done by the assistants showed pretty good results sight wise, then I saw my specialist .....

I could tell by his quietness and concentration whilst checking it out that there was something wrong. He stood and broke the news that my new lense and my iris are playing quite an overlap game that they are not meant to play. It was nice to see that he made sure that all his assistants got to check it out as apparently it doesn't happen all that often. (I think I now have a reputation there as the bloke with the out of the ordinary problems).

So, I'm off for surgery to hopefully fix the problem next Tuesday. This time he is going to do it locally rather than sending me to Sydney Eye Hospital for another bash at it.

Eye sight wise it's really good so far, but the lense has to be behind the iris, so it's an alignment operation. (It's all gone a bit squew wiff).

Just so thankful that he pushed me into his operating schedule so quickly. Fingers crossed.

well
good luck with the wheel alignment
mine don't usually take too long

I expect that you should be up and ad ém in no time Uni

but seriously, all the best for the procedure

I have started my long service leave so I am staying away from my hospital .... good places to avoid if you can , if I don't say so myself!

Hope it all goes well on Tuesday Uni. It must seem a little strange that the eyesight had improved significantly as a result of the op but still that issue to be fixed.

Strange is definately the word Pedro! I'm still apparently looking through the lense but the edge of it is sticking out over the top of the iris instead of being neatly tucked away behind it. My specialist said he'd only ever seen it a couple of times. He said this operation wouldn't be improving my eyesight at all as it's, to quote, "bloody great". He's hoping that it hasn't had too much time to bond where it is and they've added two dilating drops to my drop list in the hope that opening the iris more over the next few days might allow the lense to go back where it's meant to be. I had noticed that at times my vision was a little foggy and had been putting that down to the drops, gas bubble or post op gunk in there, so perhaps this alignment could be the cause.

Anyway I thought it was all rather interesting, thanks all for the well wishes!!

edit: I didn't spell dilate properly, but missed it. (I think I missed skew yesterday too ..... it is marvelous how the left eye doesn't pick up errors and at times actually allows you to type a similar though incorrect word).

PS: Thanks Basil (below)
