Title: 2012 Proof 50¢ 'Error' - More or Less Valuable?
Post by: Fulvio on August 31, 2015, 05:21:04 PM

I really didn't know what to tell this guy...

On the one hand, it could be viewed as an 'error' (well, OK, flaw actually).
On the other hand, the gold paint technically could be viewed as PMD, since its applied after striking.

Opinions?

That's a hard one. If its in the sealed case I could see it getting more as an error set if the right person wants it but personally I see it as no better than a bag Mark. Not really an error. Having said that coloured coins are relatively new and I don't think the coin collecting community has wrapped its head around them yet.

Yep, sealed case. The last 2 pics in the ANDA show batch I put up.

Yeah, this is like the $2 paint 'errors'. I still don't know how to think about those either.

Heh... maybe a new category...

Variety - Error - Flaw - Mispaint

I would call this a "Curiosity" and not an "Error" as such.
It had Nothing to do with the minting process, it happened in the post mint decoration process is simply  product of sloppy workmanship :ok:

Yeah, but couldn't that be said of all errors, most flaws (not all), and some varieties?

Yes it can But these paint "errors" are Post Mint, So they could  be called PMD :ok:
Just because this happened at the mint doesn't make it any less PMD than the Scratched coins they  put in mint wrappings .

No error and not in any way a coin of any interest

OK, I see where you're coming from, and as I haven't made up my own mind, tell me this...

At what point is a coin said to be 'minted'? When its struck? When it hits the tote? When its packaged? When it leaves the mint?

Because I've seen some people refer to doubling as PMD, since it arises from a loose die wobbling, and technically hitting the coin again after its struck.

Whatever happens in the Press is what the coin is as far as I am concerned , Doubling strike thoughts capped dies etc. happen at this time of the coins life :ok:
Everything after that is Post Mint is what I an thinking.
A lot of collectors will probably disagree with me But if the Mint employees get the Post Mint treatments wrong then to me it isn't an error .

Not even an error or variety or worthy of a mention

I don't know if I agree or not, TBH.

But, if the product has a number of manufacturing steps, is it accurate to only consider some of those steps?

Suppose it was a car.

The car should have an interior, paint, electrics, glass, all of which are added after the panels are struck. You wouldn't consider faults in any of those things to be the same as crashing it into a wall, would you?

Yeah, bad analogy, but you can see where I'm going with this...

Perhaps banknotes are a better example. The numbers are applied after the rest of the note is printed, and they're cut after that. Why do we care about numbering errors, 'special' numbers or miscuts then? By the same logic, they should all be PMD.

This IS a tricky one :ok:
If the Gold design that is supposed to be on the reverse was printed on the obverse the even I would consider that to be an "Error".
But just a random blob of paint in the wrong place

for a proof
I think it is less valuable and the érror' is darn awful to boot - looks like a two year old threw up on it

a proof should be perfect
