This one is unusual, the first, second and third roo all have a bizarre lamination type peel on them. (The first two in particular).
I don't know whether it is a lamination type flaw or perhaps it's the result of a strike through oil?

It kind of looks like the die is starting to flake apart on these coins .
Most likely the chrome plating starting to fall off.
Thanks Troutski & McDuck, that does make sense.
I just checked another 2009 (this one with a tail cud) and it also has it on roos 1,2 & 3 although to a different degree. From the pics it would suggest that this one was struck with more chrome off the die as the "paint" area is bigger, so it could be the same die (with less chrome and a cud section broken off) ...... and here's a picture of the roos.

Its actually quite common. Lots of platypusses (platipi?) have it on their bills too.

:laugh2: .... is that a grooming brush in your pouch Skip?
I was thinking perhaps Mr Creosote may have been involved .... I'll have six bottles of Chateau Latour Forty-five.
Better get a bucket .....
Just thought I'd continue flogging this dead horse ..... :dead_horse:
Dug out one of my other 2009 tail cuds and yes, three times proves it, so I guess it's definately peeling chrome plating on the die.

Comparing the sections on #2's back to the right of the 3's tail between the above pic to the one above it shows some progression.
Doing well with the $1s lately Uni!
Pedro
Thanks Pedro ..... just having a sort out. (A very slow process for me).
.... and just in case you thought I'd stopped .... (another from the sort tub, also a tail cud).
