As the Canberra Florin is a popular coin for collectors Worldwide, not just Australian collectors I thought I would start a thread dedicated to this coin.
As this was the First Australian Commemorative coin and it was "Hoarded" by many it isn't that difficult to acquire them in reasonable condition.
The toning on some of these coins can be spectacular due to the way they were stored and the strike quality is normally judged by the number of steps in the Parliament house design and the maces on the reverse.
The "Ear" is the determining factor for strike on the obverse.
I suggest we post images of our coins in our collections and new acquisitions of this coin here, I personally NEVER get bored looking at images of these :yahoo:
I will kick this of by posting images of the coins I picked up this morning on eBay :)

Don't be too sure of that RG, Looks an easy MS62 if not better depending on the surface condition :ok:
If you want a superb image of this coin I would suggest that you send it to Mark, He has offered this service to members for a mere $5 per coin.
Marks imagery makes PCGS "True View" look amateurish :ok:

well I know what I would bid for this coin and I don't have the deepest pockets. alas I don't think I will end up with it but I wouldn't be surprised if this coin touch's $1k
I have never seen that designation on a coin and honestly I would pay for it just to see what it looks like in hand as I have seen proof like florins before but none worthy of a pcgs pl designation
I think i have quite enough 65s :)
I've never seen a prooflike designation from PCGS on any other Aus coin either.

If I get my way we may see this on the wedding set coins :good:
This coin is unusual because it was obviously struck on a proof planchet but the strike is a bit ordinary .
Looks like a spare proof planchet was tossed into the bin of normal planchets and struck with a non proof die.
I would love to know the story behind the minting of this particular coin.
This is a nice 3 stepper that got graded MS63.

the guy said he'd do it for $100, it had $120 on it, so I got his phone number if you want it, its in a sticky 2x2 and I don't know if its been cleaned, it looks shiny, and has a blob of something in the parliament window, I took pics on angles, no massive marks or wear, might have had a dip? its nice and I don't know enough to say its had a clean, there is no cloth marks on it, but I know to look at the orbs for wear, they look good, and 3 steps!

I think this is one of the best examples of this coin I have had in my hot little hands.
I'm pretty excited with this one as it is rare indeed to see one of these that you know with a fair bit of certainty that it has never suffered a dip or had a rub with a cloth.
It came in a fragile piece of folded paper with a date of 1934 on it.
I imagine this has sat in a cupboard for the last 70 years undisturbed until recently.
I am so glad I emailed the seller and made a point of asking that they don't clean it before they sent it :good:

I think that was a very good buy at the price.
The fields are clear and has plenty of lustre ,a couple of marks on the edge of the rim and not a super strong strike.
I will be disappointed if this doesn't come back MS65 and won't be gobsmacked if it gets a 66.
I will be sending this next week and will find out in due course :ok:
This is an email I got from the seller after I had paid for the coin.
I think it was very thoughtful for the seller to send me this information and it is really nice to learn the provenance of this coin.
I told the seller that I would name the coin after her mother and she was delighted .
here is the email I got;
QuoteJim, Wondered if you would be interested in it's provenance.
This coin belonged to our mum. She originally had two, one has previously sold. She had them wrapped up and stored in her cupboard for years that my sister and myself can remember, occasionally she would bring them out to show us. She passed away in 2007, at aged 90 and we put most of her items away in cupboards till we could deal with them. We had looked and looked at keeping them but as no-one in our family has any interest and neither my sister or myself are coin collectors we decided to sell and hopefully go to a collector.
It is wrapped in some old paper with date of 1934 handwritten on it, and I will include with the coin for you. You can make your own decision on whether to keep or dispose. Her name was Lorna, and she must have bought it at some time from a dealer herself, maybe she was going to start collecting? Anyhow, just thought I would throw this info your way in case you are interested.
Kind Regards
Sue

I had another look(its in a new 2x2) this morning RG,looks like wear unfortunately.Part of that would be my slackness,i just thru them in a Bank bag for 40 years as prior to Ebay they had little value and the number of steps wasn't something i looked for.
Still a nice coin Basil, well done mate :good:
Thanks AJ,i've given it a treat by insering it in a 2x2,i should have done that 30 years ago. Some high points on the reverse seem to show wear while others don't.The obverse isn't that flash either although i think the marks near the ear are from other coins, either minting bucket or when i had it stored in a Bank bag.

This is a rather well struck coin But it does have some wear on the high points making it AU58.
Having said that , I would rather have a well struck AU58 coin in preference to a weakly struck MS62 anyday :ok:

Quote from: 'runway' pid='79682' dateline='1442670471'Question is why do you have so many and what you going to do with them ?
I LIKE them and I have been collecting them for years.
Every one of them is different and individual in one way or another.
that is why some people collect
because they enjoy their collection
not all are just after value and 'investment'
which of course makes us poorer!!
what do you collect runway?
To answer you question "what do I do with them".
I have a good look at every new arrival then I either put them in a 2x2/saflip then add them to an album.
If they are really nice/special I get them slabbed.
I have probebly sold a dozen or so and given away 50 or so to fellow collectors.

From my observations these are getting tougher to get in Unc and the prices have gone up accordingly.

I have just staggered out of bed and I do feel a little better for it :good:
I am having problems getting images of this coin to show the Proof surfaces and the subtle toning :dash1:
I do now however Know for certain what to look for on a Proof Canberra as the surfaces are Unmistakable , Pretty much the same difference as a Wedding Set coins surfaces :ok:
Ohhh, well you still better send it over so I can have a closer look :mocking:

I do feel sorry for the other bidder that only matched my proxy so that I ended up with this coin.
This is the best I can do at the moment :ok:
This shows the 2.5 steps so not only a proof planchet but a rather
good strike as well :)

You are more than welcome to come over and have a squiz Mate :)
I'm getting there slowly but surely :)
The influenza doesn't really hit Australia until well after August. So it is a late flu season here not a winter one. Apparently the infu. B this year is extremely virulent so the vaccine should help prevent it from killing you. Xx
This is the worst dose of the flue I have had in years, I have finally gotten out of bed after 3 days.
I still have the sore throat and a nasty cough but my energy levels are slowly returning.

I was about to ask what happened to the proof like Canberra. Interested to see how much it sold for though I think the estimate was $800-1000?
I got it for $750 :)
Nice mate happy for you on getting the proof like though I still prefer my old tets over it
I picked this one up from the post office today.
Nice reverse, the usual light chatter on the obverse.
Just starting to "Tone Up"

I think that was a very good buy at the price.
The fields are clear and has plenty of lustre ,a couple of marks on the edge of the rim and not a super strong strike.
I will be disappointed if this doesn't come back MS65 and won't be gobsmacked if it gets a 66.
I will be sending this next week and will find out in due course :ok:
Just got the results for this coin, No "true view" image yet.
She came in at MS65 :)
I found another early mint/die eg. with all the steps, not up to Jims excellent egs. but still an interesting coin.

we need a 'like' button here!!
Regardless of the coins condition a 3 stepper like that is ALWAYS a "Keeper".
I am of the opinion that the area on the die that produced the steps deteriated quite rapidly and finding these 3 steppers is harder than finding AU-MS coins in my opinion.
A nice Honest coin Basil :yahoo:

the obverse and reverse didn't match properly
the aussie mint tried to stop the mintage but parliament said it had to go ahead for the grand opening of PH in 1927
If my memory serves me right, the obverse was sent over from NZ and it didn't match properly with the reverse design - hence the failure in the centre of the strikes (both sides). They had to reduce die pressure to preserve the dies , therefore a fully struck 1927 PH florin is quite scarce ...
I have hundreds of these Canberra florins but only a tiny percentage have true 3 steps Maybe 8-10 of them.
They are indeed "Tough" to find with a perfect strike regardless of grade :ok:
That is probably why there are only there are only 10 graded MS66 and 1 Graded at MS67 by PCGS out of 444 coins graded so far.
This is my latest addition .
Graded MS63 PCGS, Not quite 3 steps and nice toning.

Yeah, full steps are scarce but TBH i only started looking for them a few years ago after seeing them go for a premium on Ebay.I went thru a calico Bank bag on the W/end,well over 50 coins, and that was the only find,i can't understand how i missed it first time around, those USB scopes have certainly changed the coin environment.
Also i remember(vaguely) a post, may have been on the Ebay coin forums, several years ago about "rope" on the flag pole,i had no idea what the person was talking about but i just noticed what may be it on this coin.
As an aside for anyone noodling coins,i found this mouse mat on Ebay a few weeks back,it rolls up and is perfect for sorting coins.(assuming the dyes used are harmless to sortee & coins).
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/60-30cm-Extra-Large-Gaming-Mouse-Pad-Mat-For-CS-CF-WOW-Laptop-Computer-PC-/321719174177?hash=item4ae7f50421:g:OKMAAOSw9r1WAjui
don't believe that I have ever seen rope on the flag poles either
mat looks functional - I use towels and then the towel slides - as do the coins! onto the floor
Not surprising for the "Rope" to be missing, It's not there.
Yeah,i was drawing a long bow and assuming there has been more than one coin with this feature and it was tagged "rope". As i posted previously its not a coin i had much interest in so enjoying the learning process.

I did notice that
it looks like a die crack
or at this time of night ... an alien
plenty in that building in it's day I am sure
Yeah, abnormality of some kind,as i posted earlier i vaguely remember a similar coin in the early days of Ebay and the poster nicknamed it "rope". I've never seen or heard of anything similar since so i guess there is at least 2 coins with it.
Just picked this up on numisbid, nice toned coin :)
Not a super high grade coin But I do like the toning on this one.
It only cost me $20 on numisbid :yahoo:
This coin had been stored along with some old photographic negatives and films Hence the super dark toning that is so different to any of my other Canberra coins.
I haven't gained the photographic skills to be able to image the rich colorations and hues on this coin yet So this is the best I can do at the moment
A lot of collectors don't like this sort of dark toning But I quite enjoy it and it adds "Depth" to my collection :)
Personally, I think that is a great looking coin. That dark look gives it character.
I was just having a bit of a squiz at some of my Collection of these coins and found this one I had that I graded at AU55.
It does have a tiny rim ding at about 3oclock on the obverse But all the lustre is intact under the mottled toning.
I think I may have been a bit hard on this one, What are your thoughts?

Yep, fields don't look too bad and only minimal wear, should go MS :good:
I had a "feeding Frenzy" with these a couple of years back and bought dozens of these in a short space of time.
I gave each coin a quick glance and put the grade on the 2x2 before putting them in the album.
I may have to "re Visit" these coins and have a proper look at them :)
I showed this Coin(& Microscope Photos) to a Coin Collecting friend whilst on holidays and he pointed out something he had not seen before and i had missed.(i was concentrating on the Steps). It appears to have a railing(for want of a better phrase) at the top of the steps.Anyone know what this is or seen it before, obviously on the early mint dies for some reason. It not on any other PH Florin i have.

Great find Basil. I see it in your post #55 on P2 , the close up of the steps, also again in your post #110 on P3. Probably the same coin though. It looks exactly like a hand rail.
It will be interesting to see what Trout comes up with as I reckon if anyone has any examples of this anomaly, it'll be him.
That IS interesting Basil, also great images Mate :good:
I will have to take a closer look at my three steppers when I get back home.
Thanks Jim,i've never noticed it before even when i started looking for 'steps' but to be honest its not a coin i took much interest in over the years. To my way of thinking its a very early die and looks like someone has tried to cut a railing in near the top of the steps which disappeared from later Mints but it may be something completely different.
My Friend noticed it straight off when i showed him the Microscope Pics.,he said "you have something special here",i thought he was talking about the steps but he zeroed straight in on the 'railing'.

Thanks for the reply, that was my first instinct as well but i'm not so sure now.
My learned friend seems to think the 'overlap' type tongue thing(green arrows) is too neatly formed to be done by a blow or gouge,he seems to think it was done when minted due to a die fault, you can see the groove its moved along which(i'm told) would be when the metal was hot during the actual strike, but TBH i'm just confused.
It does look like a "Hit" to me Basil
IMO It looks like it's had a nasty hit and the metal has been displaced, hence the scrape (groove).
Ok..i'm getting out-voted here.
Thanks for all the replies, thats why i posted to get some second opinions.
Spoke to my 'friend' again last night,he's been involved in Stamps/Coins for 70 years,50 of that as a dealer,he's adamant that it was caused by the strike.Reasons being the pressure required to move the 'tongue' to a position 45 degrees from where it should be,without damage, would take enormous force. The groove is the width & depth of a matchstick, impossible to gain enough force to do anything except cut a thin line in the Coin.He seems to think it was one of the original minted Coins, possibly even a trial/test Coin.
Anyway all this this is distracting from the 'railing' so if anyone finds a similar Coin could they post here.I won't be selling the Coin so no time limit.

Unfortunately he's wrong. That's definitely a hit that has displaced metal. I have seen similar things on cupro nickel coins and that's a significantly tougher material than sterling silver.
OK Mark, thats what he said, but it happened during the strike. How could anyone or anything apply that much force unless the metal was hot,it would destroy the whole area, the groove is microscopic, the PMD hit would have to be the size of a pin head.I'm sorry but after he explained everything i can see how it had to happen during the strike, foreign matter or die flaw but something has warped that area with considerable pressure/force.
Anyway i appreciate the opinions, its certainly been a fast learning curve for me since i found this coin,i'm not sure Digital Microscopes are a good thing or not..LOL.

Thanks Jim,no its not going anywhere other than into my coffin(LOL).
Collector friend got back to me this morning, just finished going thru his 27 PH's.Same as me,no expert just a hobby collector but has decades of knowledge. He didn't find a similar coin but made a couple of good points however. The damage, to his eyes, looks like the coin has taken a hit from somewhere with the groove etc.,but the odds of it happening in the exact spot to cause a section of the facade to peel back is just not plausible. So end result that is one for the experts.
2nd point he made is that the bag/bin marks near the Kings Ear means there were other coins minted at the same time so unless the batch was destroyed with only souvenirs kept there should be others hiding out there with the 'railing'.
I've sent the Pics. to a couple more Dealers so time will tell.

I have had a really good look at the "Handrail" images you have put up Basil and have come to the conclusion that the parallel line that makes up the top of the handrail is in fact part of the design, you can see exactly the same thing on the left at the top of the steps.
The vertical part of the "Handrail" is either a small "Nick" or a carbon spot/blemish.
The Detail that you think are part of a handrail are a part of the design that is normally only found on well struck examples, some people refer to them as the 4th step.
The microscope cameras can pick up all sorts of things on a coin that can change with the angle it is looked at because of the lights in the unit hit the coin at differing angles and produce different images of the same coin, The same thing can be done with any camera setup :ok:
Thank you for bringing this up Basil, I have enjoyed working out what your "Handrail" is :good:
Quote from: 'trout' pid='84185' dateline='1454564249'The vertical part of the "Handrail" is either a small "Nick" or a carbon spot/blemish.
Thats a posibility Jim,as you have probaly guessed i don't know but so far no one has seen it on a similar Coin, thats why i hope i can get a Coin to compare, even it takes a year or so.There is also something else not right but i won't mention on here just yet as i have received an offer for the Coin but unless the ante is raised by a considerable amount it won't be going anywhere.
My 'ádvisors' are both over 80 years of age,one is a former Coin dealer, but they have never seen the 'rail' before on any coin but on the other hand they never had access to a digital microscope so who knows how many are out there.
Anyway i appreciate all the replies, honest opinions are always the best, its certainly a intriguing coin.
This image is not in perfect focus and was taken through the plastic of a slab but it does show most of the detail.
This is a MS65 coin and the strike is rather good, Your coin also is rather well struck but has seen quite a bit of circulation with the associated dings and scratches circulation causes.
You can see the same lines above the 3 steps as on your coin in this image and it is not too hard to imagine a hit or carbon mark making this look like a handrail as on your coin:ok:
Oops forgot the image

No problem with expressing an opinion Uni.,and Mark knows more about Coins than me so i am happy to get peoples thoughts.
As i posted before it looks like the Coin has taken a whack, that was my first instinct, but after being told the force applied to that groove that caused the facade to laminate was the size of a pinhead and was probaly caused by the strike,i accordingly expressed that opinion here.No one else agrees (so i'm taking my photos and going home,LOL.) so its time to get back to explaining the 'rail' which may be as Trout said,be part of the original design, thats exactly what i was originally told but then it was still considered to be a hand rail that was removed from later dies.
Time will tell,i am still waiting on replies from several people.

Hi Everyone - I inherited a large number of coins about 20 years ago when my Grandmother passed away. Long hisory of collectors in the family apprently and my great grandfather was also avid coin collector up until he died in the late 1960s. A lot of the coins in the collection were collected by my great great grandfather - including some he brought back from the middle east in the first world war. Probably will never figure out what some of them are!
Anyway the Coins have been in storage whilst I have been overseas for the last 15 years. I have just dug them out and one that I really like is the 1927 Florin pictured below.
Obviously I know what it is but I am wondering how the difference is told between the normal circulation and the proof versions - as they all look the same to me. The 1927 particularly is in great nick and seems to sharper than any other coins from the era I have... I have had a look at this and am not convinced either way...
https://coinworks.com.au/1927-Canberra-Florin-Beaumont.html
You can see where I am going with this and I have no idea of the value of it - outside of its sentimental family history value of course!
What if any are the identifiable differences between the two versions? Approx values? Anyone?

Hi Repoman, :welcome: to the Forum.
Trout is our resident 1927 Canberra Florin expert, so no doubt he will be able to answer your questions about it.
I can only see one reverse image - the other two are just link details
always nice to inherit coins
much more economical than how I obtained mine
and welcome to the forum

surely this coin is a proof! it looks absolutely stunning
here is a PROOF 1927 FLORIN (GENUINE COIN) pic from Drake Sterling repoman
reckon your coin looks like this?

This coin doesn't look quite right to me - might be the over exposure that makes it look a bit funny
Got the obverse pics yet?

Hi repoman and
:welcome:
Your coin is what I would call a "Pocket piece " :ok:
The high points have been worn and they stand out making it look like a proof.
Keep hunting Mate , I am :)
QuoteTrout is our resident 1927 Canberra Florin expert, so no doubt he will be able to answer your questions about it.
I am in NO way an expert regarding Canberra Florins, I am more of an enthusiast .:ok:
Thanks all for the responses Trout and co,
My picture really doesn't do it justice, but as Robbigal says - it's doesn't look right to me either.
There something about this coin that just doesnt look like it should or the others I can find around the web. Over and over again I have examined it with a magnifying glass and I can't find another coin that has the same exact markings... It does have a raised ring around the 1927 rather than a channel that others appear to have. It also doesn't appear to have the stairs as obvious as others...
Trout - How does one find out for sure what it is?
It's tough to upload good quality imagines when you're limited to 200kb...?? Sorry. Any thoughts on how to get be res images up better?

thanks for the obverse pic
I will try to add it larger if I can remember how I did the last one ha ha

Welcome...majority don't have the steps as the die pressure was lowered(or something like that) after the early batches.I have a bank bag full of these Coins that i've collected over the last 50 years and about 4(maybe 6) have more than 2 steps.
Hard to tell from Photos but your coin looks like it had some sort of clean along the way,the silver gets that washed out look as it retones.

Yeah,pre-Ebay they were worth a couple of $,$5 tops for a good one,but hard to get one under $10 these days. Most of mine were obtained as part of bulk buys,i didn't chase them, answer an add in the Trading Post or Herald and often these were wheeled out for sale,Ebay has changed all that now though.
Since this Thread started(and i have more spare time) i've taken a new interest in them, hope to jag a pristine eg. of an early mint somewhere along the line.

Pre eBay $5 was quite a useful sum of money , Now all it will buy you is a meat pie.
I do agree though that uncirculated Canberra's are getting more expensive and not only the ones graded by PCGS/NGC either.
As of the last 18 months or so eBay is "Chokka" with "Raw" coins for sale at prices pretty much the same as the graded coins, if not higher.
I am curious that if these raw offerings are indeed Choice or Gem uncirculated then why don't the dealers get them graded so that there is No doubt about the quality/grade of these coins ?
Lets face it if you are going to pay $100> for a coin online and without the benefit of seeing the coin "In hand" then a PCGS/NGC graded coin is a far better option than just having blind faith in a dealers grading :ok:
Careful when you walk up to the steps on the last picture. It looks like footsteps in the snow.

No way. From some slabbed examples I've seen, I wouldn't necessarily place a coin of that origin any further up the tree of legitimacy than I would something that was tendered by a registered ANDA dealer/seller. If you're talking about some dodgy internet seller then that's a different story, but of course not all internet sellers are dodgy either.
Fact is, we shouldn't be putting blind faith in anyone, Ok maybe an exception for those who can educate us.

I couldn't find any florins in the objects at that there museum of aussie democracy. The one with the scratches on it would be a good one to have there.
An otherwise uncirculated coin with graffiti 9-May (opening day of the old parliament house), not a bad momento.

Congratulations on the MS65, These are bloody tough to find well done :yahoo:
There are at the moment 10 coins graded at MS66 and one at MS67 in the PCGS data base .
This one is nowhere near that sort of grade , Probably AU58 or might sneak in at a low MS but it does have 3 steps and is a rather nice strike with about 99.99% remaining lustre as well.
Regardless of what this grades at it is a rather nice example :)

With a mintage of 2 Million and these being arguably the most Popular Australian pre decimal coin ever minted the membership criteria you propose would encompass a large majority of Australian collectors and a large number of international collectors as well :)
Even worn and well circulated Canberra Florins are well regarded not only because of the design but also the way that even on a worn coin the reverse design is mostly intact and I doubt that most Aussie collectors don't either own at least one of these or have it on their "wish list" :good:

I am willing to bet that these same ANDA dealers Hate the introduction of "Slabbed" coins in the marketplace and bemoan them as well :)
I recently bought a set of Maundy coins from an eBay listing a prominent ANDA dealer put up with crappy images.
As this was an ANDA dealer I put my faith in their assessment of the coins as being Ch Unc because it was impossible to tell the grade from the images provided, boy o boy was that a bad case of misguided faith on my part:dash1:
Thank the Gods that there is now a new breed of dealers in the marketplace that embrace the concept tpg graded coins and actually KNOW how to accurately grade their "Raw" offerings when they sell them to collectors and NOT BSing the grade and condition of their coins .
ANDA does still have some of the "Old Guard" shonky operators as members But the new Guard of dealers are putting them to shame with their Integrity an honesty in the marketplace :yahoo:
One of them fellers I have walked past his shop dozens of times in the last 2 years and never felt inclined to darken his doorstep anymore. The other bloke has a shop that reminds me of something out of a Dickens novel. I never saw a slab of any kind in either establishment. I guess they don't care about the 130 PCGS slabs I bought lately.
QuoteI guess they don't care about the 130 PCGS slabs I bought lately.
There are certain dealers that would be hard pushed to come up with 130 problem free coins that are worthy of getting graded , let alone actually have some in stock for your purchasing pleasure .
Obviously I bought them mostly from the new guard - Eric, Walter, PP and Chris.
Chris has been in the coin game since 1987 (or earlier)
Yes, I have bought some coins from Chris.. highly recommended.. same as the othe 3 names there... I am hopeless at grading coins, so easy to go with slabbed coins..
Funny that I have bought off all 4 sellers
But only raw coins off Chris even though he was the one who bought pcgs to the aussie collector market (i think)

I sent my Proof like Canberra Florin to PCGS a while ago for "reconsideration", it arrived there 4/3/16 and I sent it as an "Express" submission .

Yes they called it at proof like as a pedigree so i cant see why they cant grade it as such .
There are 455 coins graded at MS, 13 at PR and zero graded PL.
If my coin does get a PL grade after "reconsideration" it will be the only one so far .
Quote from: 'trout' pid='85786' dateline='1458306579'There are 455 coins graded at MS, 13 at PR and zero graded PL.

Neither MS,PR,PL or SP are grades, the grade is the number after the prefix.
As far as I am aware the prefix are used to describe the coin type and its appearance .
No result yet from PCGS :dash1:
I hope I don't get charged the "Express" rate as this coin has been with PCGS since the 4/3/16 and it doesn't seem to be being expedited .
Maybe I will get a result next week.
I have just finished my usual hunt through the eBay listings of the Canberra Florins on offer.
Nothing there to really interest me except of course a beautiful Proof coin that is WAY above my pay grade.
I did notice that 99.99% of all the "Raw" and graded coins are priced ridiculously high for what these coins would sell for at auction, or am I missing something here?
One of the listings for a MS61 coin for nearly $700 amused me greatly and most of the raw coins dealer graded at Unc looked pretty ordinary and a large percentage of them have been cleaned, this is probably why they are not in a slab.
Compared to 5-6 years ago it is getting pretty "Tough" to find a decent coin at a reasonable price on eBay as of late.
Its just a game as far as i'm concerned, put a $100 coin in a slab and suddenly its worth $400+,i know with all the fakes its a 'security blanket' for the average collector but Dealers are milking the insecurity to the last cent.Like the Stock Market i'm sure there will be a correction down the track so we get back to realistic prices. My 2c.

It could quite easily go the other way as well and a $400 raw coin purchase put into a slab and all of a sudden it becomes a $50 coin or worse a "Melt" value coin.
This is probably the most likely scenario with the majority of raw coins I saw on offer today :(
Regardless of anyone's views of PCGS graded coins, at least you will get exactly what you pay for when you buy one and not some "Dodgy" or ill informed grade some dealer puts on the coin

It's happening more and more with raw coin sales in the larger auction houses around the country and you have to be on your guard while internet bidding.I think my worst result was buying a raw 1917 threepence graded uncirculated which came back from PCGS AU58 and there is a big price difference. It's a good way for these auctionhouses to make extra money from people who are bidding online.

I will no longer place an internet bid at the high end of what I think a coin is worth. I think all my recent wins at one auction house were at my top bid; this particular auction house states that they will manage the bidding so an item will only sell at one increment above the underbidder.
So I'm supposed to believe my top bid was one increment above the underbidder for these wins :dodgy:

Stating the obvious but Internet Auctions are very easy to manipulate, all it takes is several Accts. under the control of the Auctioneer/Owner and human nature being what it is they will buy low and sell high.
Ebay is still the fairest if you keep you guard up and make a list of the reliable/honest sellers but is still buyer beware.My2c again.

I'm sure that they have no problems with finding graders, but what about attributors?
I'm talking about those who can identify MS from PR and SP when looking at Canberra florins or those who identify Indian from English and Double Dots from Dot over Top. From what I have seen both PCGS and NGC are woefully lacking in having people with the appropriate knowledge and have mis attributed hundreds of our coins.

Hi trout the above quote is from another thread but I put the question here. In the description he says, "slight molted toning". I know you sometimes jump out of your skin for a decent Canberra Florin but I assume he means mottled?
Might as well include the PCGS image, its probably itt already but worth another look:
Yes just a typo .
Molted toning would probably refer to the Kings hair falling out :laugh2:
That auction is going to last for almost 4 months? Wow.
I snooze , I loose :dash1:
I saw this coin on eBay 5 days ago and ended up putting a proxy bid of $121 on it.
It has numerous nicks and dings in it and I had it graded at about MS62 so I thought $121 was plenty to secure the coin , Didn't work out that way :cray:
The reason I wanted it despite being such a low MS coin is the extensive die polishing on the obverse, I don't think I have seen a Canberra with this much die polish on it before.
We had a big seafood buffet this arvo and I needed a "Nanna Nap" after all that.
The nap lasted 5 hrs and I had a Great sleep after a Great feed only to be Greatly disappointed when I checked out eBay , Bugger!!!
Here is the sellers pic's of the coin I missed out on.

I just took a punt on this one.
Graded MS64 by PCGS, The image looks like the old crappy "Secure" images which are notoriously "Unflattering" .
Here's hoping that it looks a lot better "in hand" :)

I have hopes that the MS64 coin will be rather nice as well, The older PCGS images are pretty "Unflattering" :ok:
can say that again, look like a gaol coin
I stuffed up when I send the bank transfer for one of my previously posted MS65 Canberra's and sent 2x payments.
I could have had my funds returned but there was another MS65 coin available so I opted to buy that instead of a refund :)

I bought this MS64 from Chris Buesnell yesterday:

Nice :good:
QuoteI bought this MS64 from Chris Buesnell yesterday:
OK, I have to ask the "Delicate" question.
How much did this little beauty cost you ? :)
The beauty of buying coins from people like Chris, PP and other dealers of this calibre is that even if the coin isn't "Slabbed" the grade given to a raw coin is pretty much "Spot On" every time :yahoo:
$200. I hadn't seen Chris since before Xmas. He was in fine form, a born raconteur if somewhat jaded with the industry. Maybe he's been in it for too long. I bought some other coins as well but they belong in a different thread.
He knows exactly what my collecting goal is (PCGS pre-decimal slabs) and its fun chatting as he rummages through his boxes of stock pulling out coins, asking "have you got one of these?" He also knows I have a spending limit for each visit. As we get towards the end of the session he pulls out two coins saying "these are $200 each easy, any day of the week, this coin on its own is worth that!" I say "um ar, I can only afford one, I'll take the penny". Quick as a flash he fires back OK, "$300 for the pair" and what can I say but OK, sure, ya got me.
ok
where be the penny then?
that florin is very attractive too

Um is there a thread for penny pictures? Its a 1942Y. (the dot is tiny) MS63RB. I don't want to muck up trouts thread with copper coins.
Here is another 1927PH MS64 which sold on Facebook the other day for $230. I think I would have bought this one given half a chance, its nicer than mine.

QuoteYes I do.... One day I will get a pretty coins as one of yours
There are many many coins out there that are as nice and nicer than what I have.
The trouble is that many dealers/sellers want Top money for pretty ordinary "Raw" coins and to be quite honest the majority of these dealers/sellers are pretty much "Clueless" at grading and picking up if a coin has been cleaned or not.
Finding genuine and uncleaned Canberra's at a reasonable price has become quite difficult as of late because many dealers/sellers expect "Bluesheet" ( PCGS-NGC graded coins) prices for their overgraded and often cleaned "Raw" offerings.
Even the uncleaned coins are priced "over the top".
Here are a few eBay listings to show what I am talking about :ok:

So, this die polishing, is it done to a new die? Or maybe a defective die with rust or some other problem. Would there be more coins like this one out there?
Its not something i've worried much about over the years but now i'm retired and have some spare time i've taken a new interest in Varieties. AFAIK its mainly done to worn dies but the Proof PH Florins had it done.
There was a long article on the Internet a few years ago about the practice of 'polishing' dies as regards the Oz. mints, just did a Google but it didn't show but i'll try and find the old link.
It mentioned that Mint Staff cleaned the muck out of Dies with wire brushes so certainly harsh,i guess the early coins after this process weren't released for general circulation other wise there would be Thousands out there.
There are guys on this Forum that would know more about that process than me so hopefully they will post their Info.
Edit...i couldn't find Oz. article but here are a couple that mention wire-brush 'polishing'.

That's kind of what I thought at first but how many coins would a die have to strike in order to wear down the lines in those images you posted.
Great images Basil ....... you've got those closeups downpat!
Thanks Uni.,i've worked out how to get the whole Coin in focus so will post those Pics. when i get it back.I can never tell the difference between scratches & polish lines but i think they are polish lines on the 27 PH Florin,i had a good look and they seemed to be raised on this coin but i've sent it off to get a second opinion so see what happens.

Yeah, that makes sense at the pressure the Dies work at,as i said its not something i know much about, was never very interested in 'marked' coins of any sort.

The coin is in one of the older style holders and may be worth the expense and effort of sending it in for "Reconsideration" at PCGS.
This is a PCGS MS66 coin and as far as I can tell my new MS65 coin is a better grade than this particular coin.

We have pressure packs of degreaser on special at Repco at the moment.
6 cans for $10. :)
is degreaser like WD40?
No RG, WD is a lubricant mainly to loosen up rusty nuts etc or you can use it on things like a squeaking door but a degreaser is what you put on things like the motor in your car to clean it up, gets rid of or helps break up grease and oil etc, hope this helps :)
Oh and nice plug there Steve so hope your on commission :winkextra:
oh - memories
I remember degreaser being like a pink toned greasey crap that used to stink like petroleum
gee - would you put that crap on a coin? the coins would stink forever
I wouldn't be using either wd40 or a degreaser on any of my coins :stop:
I've used it in the past with no obvious harmful effects. I'm not suggesting dunking the prised collection cornerstone, but I can't see a problem in soaking a coin for a few hours such as the one in question. Each to their own though, whatever floats your boat baby. :)
I have used wd on a few old coins and works well, well enough that pcgs didn't say anything and graded one at AU58 :mocking: so I was really happy with that :)
Seriously!!!!
It appears that the stuff on this coin is either varnish or lacquer
have used some WD40 on it & have been able to remove a bit of it as you can see, bit of a shame really.

WD40 works well on bronze but not silver.
Soak it in lemon juice for a couple of hours then rinse in soapy water.
The stains should come off.
Then leave it in a dansco supreme for a year and it will retone and look great.
Mmm not good interest so might have to give it a few goes, so gentle as it goes mate and should be able to get it off over time. Maybe a soak in acetone might help loosen it up, can only try these thing.
Yes RG it was my 1923 penny, this one :)
http://www.pcgs.com/cert/32538626
Haven't tried lemon juice so worth a shot too, didn't see your post before I posted sorry echi :)
And a toothpick might be needed to get down into the date and other low areas.
If it's varnish, then maybe acetone will shift it.
QuoteSoak it in lemon juice for a couple of hours then rinse in soapy water.

:dash1::dash1:
So will all the lustre and you will forever ruin the coin , DONT do this.
If it is varnish a soak in acetone will remove this without ANY harm to the coin :ok:
Quite some years ago I had a 1927 penny (funny it's the same date) that someone had coated with varnish. Nothing would move it, even acetone didn't come through for me. In the end I tried paint thinners, thinking about it a logical candidate and bingo, stripped that little penny as bare as a babies bottom. Even the verdigris which was lurking beneath was laying in blobs at the bottom of the cup the next morning, unfortunately so was the patina, well not really but was totally gone and the coin looked freshly off the presses  This then got me thinking that I had stumbled upon a sure fire way of getting rid of verdigris, and try as I may, it was impossible to replicate the previous result  hmmm.....silly, a coat of varnish had to be applied first didn't it, and then allow to cure! Anyhow, not that the coin was any good to start with, but it retoned nicely with regular contact of human body oils (starting to get kinky I hear you say). Around the base of the neck is a good spot particularly if you're a greasy little bugger like me, and PCGS will never know :winkextra: Someone once told me a good way to retone was to slip the coin inside your sock and wear it for a day or two  it works :yahoo: And it beats going to the gym
QuoteNothing would move it, even acetone didn't come through for me.
With something like varnish you need to soak the coin in acetone for quite a while.
Just put a tissue in the bottom of a small screw top jar then add the coin and acetone then just set and forget for a few weeks.
The acetone will do NO harm to the coin and will eventually dissolve the varnish if left soaking for long enough :good:
This talk of using harsh chemicals to clean problem coins makes me cringe, Once a coin has been adversely cleaned it is damaged forever and doing this to any coin especially a Canberra florin to me is abhorrent .
Quote from: 'trout' pid='88983' dateline='1463867343'....something like varnish you need to soak the coin in acetone.
Yep,usually works for varnish,paint etc.
If it doesn't then you need to use a Ultrasonic cleaner, dab of detergent with half teaspoon of Baking Soda, the bits of the coin that aren't toned or had a varnish covering will have a sheen but if you leave the coin in air for a few weeks it will usually return to a natural toning.
Here is an example of a perfectly good coin that someone decided that a bit of a clean up would benefit it :cray:
This was probably done with all of the best intentions But it has forever ruined the surface of what was probably a MS64 coin before it was scrubbed :dash1:
Whoever did this turned a $150-$200 coin into $7 worth of scrap Silver.
Cleaning coins is NEVER a good idea even if you think you know what you are doing there is always the risk that you will ruin the coin.
The best advice I can give anyone regarding cleaning coins is simply don't do it :ok:

I agree, unless its Verdigris its best to live with it but when you have paint/varnish and the like on a Coin its visual & monetary values increase with it gone.

There was a time when Varnishing coins was an accepted practice as it does help to preserve the coin. :ok:
Trends come and go so maybe I could start this one again :mocking:
Good idea Mate.

Don't forget if you want it slabbed i'll get one of the Dodgy Bros. to personally grade it, Unc..$150..Fine.. $100..Basal State... Slab of beer....LOL..
All this talk reminds me of a 1933(?) Florin i received in a bulk lot a few years back.Looks like someone had coloured it in with enamel of some kind,it wasn't nail varnish as a Acetone bath did nothing. Finally got it to break away in a Ultrasonic cleaner,it took several cycles,10+ IIRC,but once the edges went it all fell away.
I had it sitting outside in a glass bottle(Crows & Currawongs try to steal it) for several months and it toned up OK.I'll try and find it and post a Pic.
All good Basil I've been thinking about setting up my own slabbing company :D
From what I've seen it's not that hard to do and you just copy paste from a reputable company and it's all good  I'll even put "WE" in everything so it sounds like there's more than just me doing it

:laugh2: well it's as good as any name isn't it :blush2: Surely apcgs wouldn't have a problem with that :mocking:
This probably should be in another thread, but here seemed apt. Agreeing with all of above re what and what not to do with grubby and dodgy coins, and only having purchased one slabbed coin in the past, I recently picked up my second. Hopefully it's a nice 1981 2 cent no SD, of course it's in a APCGS slab :yahoo: The reason for my confidence is that the seller said APCGS standards are much higher than that of PCGS :scared::blum3::biggrin:
You know how it is when you're looking to fill that last hole  Will post a pic when it arrives. I'm feeling lucky :yahoo:

It look pretty good as it is Bruce, I would leave it as it is :ok:
Excellent job interest :good: I take it the obverse didn't have the gunk.
I am in the process of doing my complete pre decimal collection of coins in an ultrasonic cleaner using water, a dash of liquid soap and a slurp of cloudy ammonia.
OK, so some will attack me for doing this but the dirt etc that was on the coins I have done has almost disappeared and I do not rub the coins with anything but my fingers.
The florin collection really does look tops compared to what they originally looked.
The collection is a circulated coin collection so I can't see the harm in getting rid of the dirt etc.

cloudy ammonia ??? my hubby cleans the bathroom floor with that stuff -it stinks to high heaven!!
They are your coins Goldie and what you do with them is entirely up to you But I would definitely NOT recommend doing this to any collector if the intention is to keep the coins originality .
Regardless of the sonic cleaning , just rubbing a coin with your fingers will leave minute if not major marks on a coin especially silver or copper coins.
Many a coin has been forever ruined by well intentioned people in the past and this will continue to happen I suppose.
All we can do as collectors is to advise people how to handle, Store and generally look after the coins in their collections as best we can. :ok:

Just soaked it for a while & dabbed with a cotton bud.

I have just noticed on some of the Shillings I have there is the same stuff, from the early 30's but not in that quantity, it must have been something they were using back then.

Canberras in MS64 are not really worth the cost of sending for conservation, especially when the only issue is an unattractive colour. Is the "sooty" appearance just stable toning or is there something active and destructive going on?
I've picked up a few Canberras in PCGS slabs (MS64) these past few months for about $90 to $130 each (such as ebay item 371654886567 just 2 days ago for US 71.60 plus US26.89 postage) so spending good money on postage and conservation will not make your florin worth that much more. BTW how much did you pay for this black Canberra?
I didn't pay big money for this one and you are probably quite right about not worth getting conserved/cleaned.
I will just put this with the others as it is .

QuoteI've picked up a few Canberras in PCGS slabs (MS64) these past few months for about $90 to $130 each
Nicely done Neil, Most of the graded Canberra's that are US listed usually have high/ambitious price tags on them :good:
Also a rather large percentage of the Australian listed Raw coins that are described as Ch UNC and Gem UNC by mostly dealers are listed at "Bluesheet" values and finding accurately graded collector listings are getting few and far between as well lately.
I am not that interested in paying Bluesheet values for Raw coins, I'm thinking that if these are as good as they say they are Why haven't they been graded yet?
I used to be able to find at least 1 nice Canberra each week, But over the last couple of years this seems to have become quite tough and that's why I have been getting the graded coins :ok:

What's the story with #14303260, when and where did you buy it? Did you send it back for reconsideration? If so what was it originally graded?
Quote from: 'r9453' pid='92231' dateline='1468011316'What's the story with #14303260, when and where did you buy it? Did you send it back for reconsideration? If so what was it originally graded?
I recently bought 2 MS65 Canberra Florins from Drake Stirling numismatics ( Eric Eigner ) this coin was one of them.
The reason why I bought 2 of them is because I sent a Bank payment to Eric's old account by mistake so I sent another payment to the correct account for the first coin.
As He had another MS65 coin in his inventory I suggested that I purchase that instead of him sending a refund for the first payment which went to the wrong account.
When the coins arrived here I noticed that this particular coin was nicer than the other 4 MS65 Canberra's that I have and decided that it was a worthy candidate for a reconsideration submission.
It has retained the original cert#14303260 but it has been reholdered and the grade has been changed to MS65+, I still think it is a MS66 coin but MS65+ is what PCGS has graded it as so I will have to put up with it.
OK thanks, that explains it perfectly. Getting an extra point from MS65 to MS66 after reconsideration would be a bit like herding a camel through the eye of a needle.

HeHeHe
Pretty much the eye of the needle stuff but that little "+" at the end of the grade puts this coin in the top 14 of the 474 Canberra florins graded by PCGS with only 11 coins graded higher, With the single finest MS67 coin being only 1 1/2 grading points higher.
:i_agree: :ok:

Both PCGS and NGC both annoyingly put the obverse of the coin on the grade side of the slab, which is a shame.
That particular box only holds 8 slabs, the rest of my slabbed Canberra's live in special slab pages in an album :ok:

Yes your right Rob, it should say parliament house and not canberra because that's what it is.
the Obverse is 'the coin' - i.e. the monarch of the time and the legal authorisation of the value of the coin
apparently the reverse (that we love so much) is just the added pretty stuff
i always call the obverse 'the back' with my coin dealer and he gets annoyed!!
I always put the notations on my 2x2's on the reverse of a pre decimal coin and on the obverse with decimal coins because that is the side the date is on :ok:
There is no doubt about it, PCGS mount our coins back to front. However, when they create the True View image I think its correct to have the monarch on the left and the money shot on the right.

That is a Stunning coin and one that would have to be viewed "In Hand" before bidding on as there is a vast difference in the NGC images and the newer ones.

Quote from: 'interest' pid='92746' dateline='1468727683'is that a hole in the coin just behind the Kings head?
NO
It's something that I like to call "Pin Hole" Toning.
Probably caused by a tiny bit of something that was touching the coin that has affected the toning or a pin hole in the envelope the coin was stored in.
I have just bought this one of Eric, I couldn't afford the MS66 coin he has on his website But the toning on this looks really promising and I just couldn't resist it :good:

If the images for this coin are anything to go on then this is a pretty "ordinary" looking MS66.
Maybe the people that viewed this "In Hand" thought so as well and that's why it only made it to $1600 at auction
I have done some "Horse Trading" and have secured this one for my collection :yahoo:
PCGS MS66 :)

I just picked this one up from the post office, I had totally forgotten about this one.
This is one I got from Eric, MS64 and without the 2 small hits in front of the Kings face this would have had a real good shot at MS65.
A very pleasing coin :)

I will attempt to get some better images of the coin that will hopefully show its true beauty and post them up here :ok:
I'm ready for my access visit :beg: :laugh2:

I got this from Eric.
He viewed the MS66 coin at the Fenton sale and he is of the opinion that this one is much nicer, I just "Got Lucky" with this one I suppose :)
When I picked it up from the Post office I took it straight outside in the sunlight to look at it and even through the plastic baggie and the slab the colours in the toning were amazing.
I am Very happy with the coin and it looks far far better than the images on Eric's site or the ones I can come up with.

I bought mine raw from a Downies auction in 2006 and it was the second coin I ever got graded and was the second MS66 graded. The MS67 was already around at that time. Honestly I have a MS65 which I think is much nicer looking. Neither hold a candle to yours though.
The MS65+ coin that I have is technically just as nice and with a better strike than my 66 coin but it doesn't have the "Wow" of the 66 coin.
I have 5 other MS65 coins and I am thinking of sending back a couple of these for "reconsideration".
I just had a look at what I have in graded Canberra's and I have 1x MS66, 1x MS65+, 5x MS65 1x MS63 Proof Like and two blue boxes full of MS64-AU58 coins.
I think I may have enough graded coin now

I may be able to use it as a reference along with mine to see if my other MS65 are worthwhile sending off for reconsideration and the long wait involved.

No Mate, From the sellers images it looks to me to be a nicely toned AU58 coin, Too much wear to be MS But still an attractive looking coin :ok:
Even 3-4 years ago you could pick up uncirculated Canberra's for less than $50 but many of them were cleaned or dipped and that is still the case with many of the Unc raw coins on offer today.
I did manage to pick up 2 nice Raw coins last year that went MS65 But these are getting super scarce to find now.
Yes with the widened acceptance of TPG graded coins the values have risen somewhat and the sellers of the coins that "They Think" are high grade and faultless are pricing them the same as the graded coins.
I would tend to think that these days that the Raw Choice and Gem Unc coins being offered by the dealers now have to be "suspect" otherwise they would have been sent away to be graded by now IF they were as good as they spruik them up to be :dodgy:
Yeah I ended up with the Fenton 66 Canberra, its OK for the price but will probably buy another yet as the obverse although lustrous ect just not quite right eye appeal wise for my collection. Just need a toned god of the proof 27 now and I'll be happy :)

It's my bid. I'm taking a punt that the coin will not be AU58 but will make MS64. Only thing that might keep it out of MS is a hint of shine on the maces and scroll ends when everything else is nicely toned.
Although these days there are Canberras already in MS64 slabs that sell for under $180 so it isn't really a wise financial move (but I love toned coins).

What's with the top of the Kings ear, Is that a result of the photo or is it actually on the coin??
Because from your image it looks like he has taken quite a hit in that area, I hope it is the image and not the coin.
Just the photo, only the lightest of contact marks in the fields and that's it. Reverse is pristine, very light overall golden brown toning just the way I like it. Still light enough to have full lustre but just enough to make it attractive.

will you get the coin reholdered to have the 'true view' photos taken?
if so would your risk the existing grade? i.e. they regrade the coin

Yes there are But as with all the higher graded Canberra's there is quite a difference in the eye appeal, Strike and quality of the toning within the same grades.
Here are 3 different MS64 coins that will show this.
They range from pretty ordinary, Nice to very nice :ok:

I probably like the bottom one the best :)
QuoteNiccce, yes pcgs aren't infallible that's for sure.
PCGS did get it right with these 3 coins, They are all MS64's technically.
That last coin would be a MS65 if it wasn't for that "hit" in front of the Kings Chin which cost it a grade point, I am considering sending that one back to see if they will give it the "+" that it deserves :ok:
All I am saying is that within a given grade there are subtle differences that make some coins more visually appealing than others :)
Just send it to me as I don't mind if it doesn't have a + on it :blush2:
I could go for a run over to see old mate in lismore and get some "slabs" and re slab it for you  :mocking:
I have noticed something a little peculiar with the values of Canberra Florins over the last few months.
The High grade coins MS64 and up seem to be getting cheaper and yet the lower grade coins from MS63 down seem to be getting dearer.
Even the raw coins on offer seem to be getting more expensive.
Maybe collectors are being a little more frugal and are settling for these lesser graded coins for their collections and this has created an increased demand for them.
To me it looks like the market for pretty much all Australian coins has gone through a period of downward adjustment over the last few months But these Mid range to lower grade Canberra's seem to be bucking that trend.
I have noticed the same, I have a fettish for all things 1927, aiming to own the finest set of 1927 coins I can find not just grade but eye appeal aswell. The Canberra florins I used to pick up graded in MS63 for $50 quite often and nice raw UNC never really set me back more than $80 at auction. Now I'm struggling to find anything half decent in the market at all
It has probably been about a year since I have seen any decent Raw Canberra's for sale/auction, lots of "wannabe's" out there though.
With the amount of these coins already graded I have doubts that the top end of the population will change that much even with the dwindling supply of older collections yet to be graded taken into account.
Even if the number of coins in the top end of the scale doubled there would still only be a very small number of coins available for collectors Worldwide and these coins would have to be one of the most popular if not THE most popular Australian coin.
As requested here's my PCGS MS66 Canberra Florin. It's prettier than I remember.

ANY counterfeit without "COPY" stamped on it is a potential hazard to collectors :ok:

Yes, I got it and it was worth taking a punt on. Has one small ding in the field but is otherwise a choice Unc and compares to my other MS64 coins in strike but has a more mirror like reverse surface (which is something I've found previously on other florins from that particular reverse die).

Ah the famous Nanna's Knickers draw storage facility has been the "Keeper" of many a nice Canberra florin.
I bought one a while back that I named "Lorna" because that was the name of the woman that the bit of paper that the coin was wrapped in had on it.
This was also found in her knickers draw after she had passed on unfortunately.
I still have that scrap of paper that the coin was wrapped in for so many decades and this coin graded MS65.
Haha, she said she kept them in alfoil as she didn't know how to store them (pre-google, pre-this forum).
 foil, gee lucky there wasn't some sort of reaction between the two metals. Please post a pic if you get a chance marksy :good:
ha ha well alfoil keeps the leftovers in the fridge for longer
might just work for coins!
HeHe
We used to cover penny's in alfoil and rub the design through to make them look like half crowns
We used to rub pennies and halfpennies with illicitly obtained mercury and pass them off as florins and shillings.
God knows what we may have been doing to our health by rubbing the mercury on with bare fingers! :shok:

does the mercury make the copper turn silver?

apparently the halfpenny when coloured silver could be passed off at the pub as a shilling - king side up on the bar

Enamelling coins used to be quite popular and this one has been done rather well.
I just wish that they would use low grade coins for this instead of using coins like this one that would have been a nice example before being enamelled :dash1:
I'll throw this up while things are quiet,a bit puzzled with this grade,NGC MS65,seems to have normal bruising on Crown part of Mace,Bin/Bag marks on Obverse. What am i missing or are PCGS tougher graders?

The coin looks MS65 to me, I have seen PCGS MS66 coins with similar bruising .
Apart from some tiny nicks on the fields of both the obverse and reverse the fields look to be nice and clear, To make MS65 the lustre would have to be rather good.

I imagine they would be, Because now selling cleaned and overgraded coins has become too difficult because of the acceptance of TPG graded coins and that they have to now compete with accurately graded coins instead of being able to just put a BS grade on a coin and sell it:good:
There were many genuine honest Dealers out there when i was growing up but most were 80% Stamps with Coins as a sideline.Just a jungle now with the fakes and plastic boxed Coin grades being taken as gospel.
I personally don't take the grades on the slabs as "Gospel" I always have a good look at the coin and try to make my own assessment of the coin.
That being said TPG's DO make mistakes But not at the same rate that dealers do with Raw coins.
For myself personally I would take a grade given by NGC/PCGS far more favourably than a grade a coin is given by a dealer :ok:
When these type of coins are graded, is the browning/toning of the coin come into play or not.
I can see that it is a nicely minted coin but that browning toning would turn me off.
I'm not certain with the USA Pro. Graders but the early Oz. ones in the 1990's took all that into account.Black spots,bag/bin/reeding etc. all affected the final grade. I try to stay away from offering opinions on Grades but i've seen a few Slabs on Ebay recently that are puzzling,to me at least.

This is probably why MS67 is the highest grade that has been achieved so far for the Canberra Florins.
As far as the toning goes , These Stirling Silver coins are now nearly 90 years old and unless the coin has been stored in a perfect vacuum they will tone to some extent over the years.
Some collectors don't like toned coins and some do, I happen to be in the "Like it" camp :)
I liked naturally toned pre-decimal Coins, bit of dirt/muck also adds character IMO,alarm bells ring if a Coin isn't toned esp. Silver. The problem with old Silver is some toning looks like a dogs breakfast and must affect collectability and value, other natural Silver toning looks stunning after decades in storeage and must increase its grading score.
Gee I wish I still had my 1927 that I bought off IS Wright in 1988. It was described in the auction as FDC and was blast white. Positively beautiful, unfortunately events in 1992 resulted in it going to a Sydney dealer at a loss (to me) at the time (along with my beautiful 34/35 and unc C & R $20). Ahhh the memories.
Up until recently i never had a top shelf 1927 Canberra, and i've got a bagfull of them, its just a Coin i never worried about, but i also offloaded some Coins to Sydney Dealers in the 1990's and have regretted it ever since. They buy at about half,or less,of a coins value and sell at a premium but it was the only option in those days if chasing quick money.
Over the years i always seemed to get better deals of the Stamp specialists that had Coins as a sideline but Ebay, for all its faults and scams, has certainly provided a great platform for hobby collectors to buy & sell.
Two of my MS65 Canberras were bought from eBay Raw, but they are few and far between amid the "wannabe" overgraded offerings on the bay :ok:

Another of my Brothers Coins that we have been having a good look at,in hand it seems different to the normal 27's and we were wondering if its one of the Special Strike 'Proofs',it has a matt finish Obverse but seemingly normal Reverse ,the Die Polish lines seem to be in the correct place as is the extra detail in the strike such as the Kings eye.
May just be an early mint eg. but opinions appreciated.

I would love this to be an impaired proof for you Basil But I don't think it is Mate.
One of these has been on my bucket list for years and I had had my hopes up on a few occasions But I am yet to find one.
The best i have been able to get is a "Proof Like" specimen.
Walter has one and he put up some images a few years ago and yours looks different to Walters coin, I think he put it in a grading post and I called it as an AU58 coin and totally missed that it was a Proof strike :dash1:
I have also been told that once you see a Proof Canberra "In Hand" you will just "Know" what to look for :ok:

Yeah, just pondering, there is something different about the Coin, probably an early strike with all the steps.
Thanks Echinda,i'll look for that Á in the future.

VF Polished worth pretty much melt value, Sorry mate :ok:
Don't be sorry mate, it only cost me $5, so it was worth grabbing.
Melt is about $7 I think. I grabbed 3 of them.
How do you tell it's been polished.
cause its'so glarey/shiney and then the high points are really worn
OK.
What about these 2.

I bought a Kilo of these at melt price early in the year when silver was at about $15.50-$16 I think, They are all polished and look fantastic from a distance :)
Strangely enough many Canberra florins ( and the 51 54 florins) have been hoarded as bullion and have been treated as such, Putting silver coins through a Shell tumbler to clean them up to make them "Presentable" is not that uncommon :cray:
The coins that I got in the kilo lot are all ruined numismaticaly But they are a far more attractive option than a bunch of booring Silver bars anyday :)

Like many others in this thread this is one of my favorite coins. We have collected a few of these so far and this is my favorite. Maybe not the best grade, no steps and a scratch under the king. I had to take the picture on an angle to try and catch some of the colour.

not for my grand kids Jim , they are not interested anymore , but yes for my kids when I go , and as you said before , enjoy what you have and collect now , don't worry about the value of them later on , who cares what happens to them when I go , just enjoy them now .
I have just decided to follow my path now and enjoy what I have while I am still here ....

Nice!!
I'm still a bit Dirty on PCGS for not giving this coin a "PL" designation when I sent it back for "Reconsideration".
They have it as "Proof Like" as a Pedigree so I really can't see the drama giving it a PL designation when I sent it back :dash1:
Proof-like Canberras are quite different to the regular circulation strikes .
Some appear to be proofs but die polish is different.
I think a seperate catagory in Maccas & Renniks (and PCGS) would be right.
Please excuse a bigginer but what makes a coin proof like as opposed to proof and how does this effect the value.

That makes two of us.
Google:
"A prooflike coin is a highly POLISHED (by the MINT) regular strike coin. A prooflike coin appears to have a near proof coin reflection. Prooflike coins usually occur in the earliest strikes. Prooflike coins are the most common in intentionally produced PL sets, such as Canada."

Proof-like Canberras have mirror fields OR have been struck from re-used proof dies.
The ones with mirror fields were possibly struck on polished proof planchets.
Unlike Canadian PL coins they were struck for circulation.
They are sometimes graded as proofs so a seperate catagory would be appropriate to avoid this.
My understanding of Proof Like or PL coins is that the coin exhibits proof like qualities eg smooth mirror like fields and a strong overall strike But the coin is Not considered to be struck with proof dies in the same manner that proof coins are ( struck more than once and at higher pressures to a business strike) and not on specially prepared planchets.
The explanation that I got as to how my particular PL coin came about is that a surplus Proof planchet was used on a normal press to produce it.
I am unaware of any other PL Canberra's But I imagine that there are some others because I vaguely remember Walter commenting that my particular PL coin was one of the best that he had seen, Maybe Walter can enlighten us about these unusual Canberra Florins.
I do remember bidding on a coin that looked to be prooflike on Numisbid a while back but I missed out on that particular coin and one of our members here secured the coin instead.
I won my particular coin on Numisbid a year or so ago But at one stage I was devastated that I was unable to bid "Live" due to work commitments and was outbid by another collector.
It turned out that the winning bidder hit the wrong bidding button on the night and the bid was cancelled and my "Proxy" bid Won the Day for me :yahoo:
Even alongside MS65 and my MS66 Canberra's the difference between the MS coins and the PL coin is clearly evident and that $750 I spent on my coin was clearly well spent :good:
See, Behind every coin there IS a story to be told :)
If anyone else has a PL Canberra I would love to see images of them here on this thread.

Deep mirror surfaces and cameo appearance.

The die polish marks on both of our coins are not the exactly the same but are in the roughly the same areas on the coin.
When you have a really nice clean coin. :ireful:

Another circulation strike from the proof dies.
Pics are sellers and it looks a bit ratty.
Should be better in the hand.
My guess is that they did a reasonable run before the reverse die cracked.
Super nice !
Were these coins struck in 1927 and plated in 2017?

:icon_cry: Frankly there needs to be an emoticon spewing green vomit for when I see plated coins, especially when they are at 700% of their bullion value that they peddle as "value for money" and are not even MS grannybait. Frankly they are false advertising as that blue image has perfect steps and full maces.
So, can anyone do this or do Downies have special permission?
Why did they think such an iconic coin needed "improving"?
Suggests a degree of opportunism to come up with another way to improve their sales.
Gee I should dip my old crappy one's and jump on the band wagon :mocking: Yeah as if I would, I like mine just the way they are :)
Don't Laugh But I actually bought a Gold plated Canberra a few years ago as a "Curiosity",
I think I paid $30-$40 for it probably because there was more than one idiot (Me) bidding on it at the time
The "Host" coin however wasn't one of these worn out coins imaged in the Downies ad It looks to have been an EF-AU coin before it was Bastardised.
I've been photographing and cataloging some coins and noticed some serious die cracks in this one. From the top of the "I" in GEORGIVS to the "MP" in IMP. Not sure how well they all show up, still need some practice with the photography. I'm guessing this die was on its last legs.

Die cracks on the obverse of these coins is quite a common occurrence.

something of that value should be slabbed .. yes/no
Hypothetical question.
If I ever acquired one (extremely unlikely) then I would consider the options. I am thinking, regardless of packaging, a safe deposit box -but then you just can't grab it and admire it anytime you feel like doing so.

If it was graded and encapsulated by either PCGS or NGC it would be safe from damage.
If I had to use a safety deposit box to keep my coins safe I would Never have started collecting, It would Spoil the experience :ok:
I agree -we collect, we don't invest. If we happen to make a modest profit a long way down the track that is nice but not an expectation.
I picked up this today, it seems to be an old die or a weak strike, there is only one & a bit flag poles one partial step yet the two mace's have just a little wear & the date not too bad. Plus a hair on the scanner.
