Yes. Lamination flaws are produced the same way as other cold shuts. Temperature differences cause two layers/chunks of metal to not bond properly, and the resulting weakness eventually tears itself apart.

They're not errors as such, because each one is absolutely unique. Errors are repeatable, so your rabbit ears may be identical to my rabbit ears for example, since they were both struck from a faulty die.

IMO, flaws should be MUCH more appreciated than they currently are, and I think its down to ignorance that they're not. This is a lovely example, going as it does from edge to edge. I can't help but wonder if the flaw extended all the way across the sheet, and if this coin has a whole row of siblings out there somewhere. :)

Why not send it to PPH to put in the shoe box?

Cousin, perhaps. If they were siblings, the flaw would be the same distance from the rim.

So, let's hypothesise for a second...

If the rollers slipped at just this point, and a row of bitten planchets with this flaw through them came about, you'd throw them back in the pond?

Or do two flaws cancel each other out or something?

At the very least, I hope you'd pass such finds along. :)

I usually send all my error type coins to Nancy and now I know
she has a cousin to keep this company, I will definitely send it
to Nancy. :)

I don't mind if you send it to PP to go in the shoe box.  I'm quite happy to have just the one example. :friends:
