Eric
Not much chance of me buying one at the moment but thanks for the heads up Eric :hi: But it might save another member doing their money :good:
Hey Eric, I am not in to sovereigns. But out of curiosity, could you please tell us how to identify a fake Sov ?
Here is a real 1915 Sovereign as a comparison.
Compare the two and the fake is blindingly obvious :ok:

Nightmare,i can never pick them from most Ebay Pics.,i have a list somewhere on what to look for and the common dates,1895 was one.
With this one the first thing is the streamer from the back of the riders helmet, horses chest is all wrong and lack of detail on the Dragon i guess.
Fake on right...

The rough surface and the oddly spaced date are reason for caution (see an image of the real thing: http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=143&searchlot=2564&searchtype=2).
Also, the 1917 London sovereign isn't the sort of coin you put on ebay with a 99c start price.
I can see differences,Dragons mouth,4 ribs instead of 5 on wing, decorations on riders chest, but this fake would pass muster easily on Ebay, imagine how many are out there.
Fake RHS.

Excellent comparison pics Basil! :good:
Thanks Guys, blind Freddie can now spot the difference...
Yeah I'll say, the fakes chest looks totally different and just doesn't seem to have the detail and also looks like it has boots on, hands/claws on the dragon and quite a few other things when you see them side by side. The fake even looks to have a few cuds here and there.
And another:

Yeah,i can see that now,the 2nd 1 is wrong, too close to the 7(or too far from the 9) but still hard to pick to my eyes.
Coin/Stamp dealer that spoke to us for 1 Period a week back at School said an Oz. Squash Player returned from a Tournament in Egypt(?) in the 1960's with both his Squash shoes full of fake Sovereign's,if true they're all out there somewhere.
The detail and look of the horses mouth is probebly the easyest way to spot theses :good:
Fakes and deliberate PMD are becoming a real problem on eBay it is absolute FRAUD
Question is how can we report these to eBay?
They make it hard, the report links are bullshit, how does everyone report these?
I agree the reporting procedure is over simplified. Only way it might be effective is if many reports, from different people, are filed for a particular item or seller.
If eBay does cancel a seller's registration for continued breaches of rules, what is to stop the seller just registering again in a different name? We have had one bidder in the last month pop up with three different names and nothing shows in her ID history. We reported her for non payment and she is a serial pest demanding we allow her to "Buy it Now". Adding her to our 'blocked bidders' list doesn't stop the bombardment of mail -maybe there should also be a 'blocked sellers' list with notification to the seller whenever a potential bidder has marked them to never bid on any of their items.
Here's another. Looks like a genuine sovereign (a Sydney by the looks of it) where the mintmark was obliterated to make it appear to be the rare London.

To be fair to the seller, she does state that she doesn't think it's the London mint.

Jeff eBay don't care which is sad,I report every suss item to them but the process doesn't allow to directly report a fraud coin listing.
I always contact seller stating my feelings and 99% of the time they report me for the easy links ie harassment etc
Gotta love the system hey :wavemulticolor:
