Well after AC going on about fishin yet again she's inspired me so tomorrow if all goes as planned I'm going late arvo and stop at a few places along the river and end up at iluka wall on the change of tide and then on the beach on the high tomorrow night so with a LOT of luck I might catch something but even if I don't it will be nice to get out as I haven't been for ages :yahoo:
After that build-up we expect to see photos of the catch!
Pedro
:laugh2: don't know about fish mate but I'll take a few pic's of where I wet a line :) Does it matter if it's fillets as I might have to stop at the co-op :blush2:
Get off ya arse and come visit me and show me how it's done Pedro :D
@@###%% internet - just ate my reply and it was long-winded for me!
Pedro
Anyway AJ what I said was - going fishing with me is a ticket to see some of the ugliest specimens you could imagine eg cobbler (relative of the stonefish)*, toadfish, eels# etc etc. Not recommended unless you are fully insured!
* We had a friend with us who tried to get the cobbler off my line without slicing himself on the razor sharp barbs on the fish's head. Ended up he slipped on the rock we were on and cracked a vertebrae. What made the trip even more special was the 1/2 kilometre walk (both ways) through low water that was infested with mosquitos that ate us alive (being in shorts and thongs). Needless to say I have not forgotten that day.
# This session actually turned out a win/win. There was a Greek family about 20 metres down the wall that we were fishing off and when they saw what we had caught they offered the bream they had caught in exchange for the eels. :yahoo:
Pedro
Good on you Mate, its not about what you catch its more about just being there and enjoying it :good:
Mate do I hear ya and really really hate it when that happens :(
We have eels, grunters (cat fish) and bullrouts and gee you have to be careful with all of them and especially bullrouts and heaps of people tread on them in the river and the grunters have nice sharp spines that can really lift so the eels are probably the best things to catch but they slim up the line so other fish won't touch it them and my back is already stuffed so it's all good :D
Bullrout, and they love to hide in the weeds

Yes second that trout :friends: I spend way too much time here and need to get out and about more :winkextra:
If that wasn't enough then there was the weir episode. When we were somewhat younger we used to get on the tredley and ride out to the weir for a day's fishing (only 10 mile each way). Being slack you didn't want to hold the rod all day so you got a forked stick and placed the rod on it with stones on the end to keep it down.
Ok, let's get a couple of rocks ... never dropped anything faster in my life, couple of scorpions were is residence. Time to look elsewhere!
You getting the picture yet AJ. And if I didn't catch something useless then I caught nothing at all.
Pedro
I am not fishing but i did cajole and wangle to get to Perth to help out on a Mill :yahòo:
Just being back in the workplace makes me feel alive again :)
Not as good as a fishing trip but hay beggars cant be choosers and i am as happy a larry at the moment :dance2:
:laugh2: yes I have the pic in my head Pedro..and a few others :)
yes being happy is what it's all about because when you think about it we aren't here long really :winkextra: Taken me a long time but slowly getting use to not being able to work any more as I use to love work, yeah I'm sad but ya get that and I still get down from time to time thinking about what was but not much I can do about it so you lot really help me in so many way I can't put it into words, THANK YOU :friends: Having nice people in my life makes it sooo much easier :give_rose:
OK, here's one of the others that you have in your mind AJ.
We're merrily fishing in the Murrumbidgee a few kms from my grandparent's place. All is going well (apart from the fact that we hadn't caught a cracker) when my father suddenly tells everyone to pack up and get in the car pronto. Quizzical looks all round.
The spot we were in was protected by trees but what he had seen above them was the sky starting to turn red.
We beat a quick retreat back home before we were hit by a beaut dust storm. Even though we were only a comparatively short drive from base it would have been an even hairier trip had my father not picked up on what was happening. The storm knocked out the power and we had some fun with candlepower.
I probably should point out too that my grandparent's loo was out the gate and down the backyard (can you see that far?)! Tie it in a knot son.
I don't remember what we had for dinner but it certainly wasn't fish!
Pedro
Lightly 'dusted' fillets. :shok:
On second thoughts Pedro it might be a bit risky :fie: nah your welcome any time mate :good:
One last fishing story.
My parents organised to go and visit my uncle at his farm. He suggested that we throw in the fishing gear because he knew a great little fishing spot.
We get up to his place and my uncle, father, my brother and myself pile into the ute.
Off we go into the bush and eventually get to the designated spot. Beautiful glade with a stream and small pond. No, my uncle says the best spot is over here.
He takes us a bit further on and we peer over the precipice - his spot is the pond at the bottom of the cascade (we had only initially seen the top pond). Small hurdle - a 30 foot drop and a truckload of bracken and brambles to get through. Again we were appropriately attired in shorts!
We decided that we would stay at the top pond and my uncle decided to go to his spot.
Had a pleasant enough time throwing in the lines but came up with zilch.
Then things started to change. Black clouds rolled in and the "breeze" began to blow.
Storm coming. Back into the ute - kids in the back!
Not a pleasant ride home although I don't remember getting too wet so I think the worst of that we were saved from but still it blew something fierce and we were hanging on for dear life (I think my father joined us in the back on the way home as he probably thought we would get blown out)!
Think I might still be traumatised from that one.
Pedro
Loving the great fishing stories!
My best was catfishing with Dad and an old chap he knew. This old fella had a numb arm from the war so didn't care about picking up catfish spines and all. We caught a heap the night we went out and ate them for months thereafter. I still remember burning dry cow pats to keep the mozzies away in a backwater scene that wouldn't look out of place in a deliverance movie. The old fella used to eat snakes too, king browns, he reckoned they tasted a lot better than fish! :kez_15:
One year when I was very young (under 10), it was arranged for my BIL, Sister, their 4 kids, Mum and the remaining kids still at home, possibly about 6 of us, to go to the beach, about 20 or so miles away and catch some fish. We all went in the BIL's old ute, 3 adults in the front, the rest in the back.
While driving along one of the adults noticed a wheel rolling along the road in front of the ute, and my BIL said something along the lines of "bloody hell that's one of my wheels". He stopped the ute, retrived the wheel (which had rolled off the side of the road into the bush, put it back on the ute and we continued our journey. I have no idea how he attached it to the car, as I imagine all the nuts had been lost. He may have taken one nut off each of the other wheels and used them, dunno.
Because there were so many kids in the back, the ute never went out of balance until it came almost to a stop, and prior to stopping, the BIL had already yelled at us to all get to the back of the tray.
It was a great yarn that has been told many many times.
Loved to go fishing, should do it more. It's 1973 in Sydney, the Wife and I are not long married, and on this sunny but cold winters day mid June we took a trip down the Princess highway to Tom Uglys (not sure about the spelling) bridge on the Georges river.
Being a book worm the Wife sat in the car while intrepid me was conjuring up a plan to catch moby dick. After rigging up a live bait that was caught earlier (poor thing) I got myself out to the very edge of the rock wall so the launch would be more effective. Unfortunately my foot slipped on the greasy rock and in I went.
Got myself back to the car totally drenched and frozen, so grabbed a blanket off the back seat and made for the toilet block to dry off. Wasn't much point putting the cloths back on so I drove home in the raw.
The Wife panicked all the way home, worried that if we had an accident she may have to show cause why she was travelling with a naked man.
great stories
yep auto -lucky you weren't pulled over and then immediately arrested!! ha ha
:laugh2: top stories team, I love it :friends:
