I am a little bit concerned with the practice of selling Uncirculated business strike coins in the Proof cases.
I myself have listed a case with non1966 proofs in it but cancelled the listing after some great advice from members here.
I had absolutely no intention to deceive anyone I simply thought it would be a "novel" way of recycling an bit of RAM packaging.
However, many ebayers are using these old cases to (IMHO) Deceive uneducated collectors :dodgy:
Here are a few listings for your opinions on this practice :ok:
Note, only one of these seller mention in the description that the coins are not proof.

I can understand your reluctance to comment Mate :ok:
I understand a well known member here has sold a few of these that you don't want to upset and I can understand that :)
I on the other hand am NOT so "Squeamish" :ok:
So , I give everyone "Fair Warning" If any member here on this site lists one of these types of sets (regardless of the later print warning that they are not proof coins) I will report them to eBay and name them on CCF and on this site for being "underhanded" and untrustworthy :ok:
at least I'm honest :D
or at least as honest as I can be :winkextra:
with out diggin myself a big hole, that I often fall into :laugh2:

IMHO that's a bit tough Mate. Personally I don't give a rat's because I don't sell, but if a seller is up front and openly and CLEARLY declares an item as actually being what it is, I don't see a problem.
It's a bit like someone selling a holden FJ with a 179 engine fitted. So long as they declare it. :)

Yeah, I'd go along with that.
This is no different to selling fake coins labelled as such. As long as the intent isn't to defraud, I don't see a problem.
What does an UNC set and a case sell for separately? What does a proof set sell for?
QuoteWhat does an UNC set and a case sell for separately? What does a proof set sell for?
You can get an UNC set for about $50
Proof sets range from about $300-$500, depending on condition.
The cases had little value until the practice of putting UNC coins in them started.
You can now get $30-$50 each for them now I imagine.
Nothing wrong with it as long as you are declaring what you sell but it isn't right if you just
say it's a proof set.People can make their own minds

I would hazard to guess that 99% of people that buy these wouldn't have a bloody clue of what they are actually buying.
All they see is the proof box and the coins are in "Uncirculated" condition.
I also imagine that they would be bitterly disappointed if they ever try and sell these and would probably never buy another coin and give up collecting.
I am sorry Steve but this is more than simply a selling gimmick, IMHO it is a scam that preys on the new and uneducated collectors .
These are the people that are so important to encourage them in their collecting hobby.
It is all well and good saying "But I listed them as UNC" but you , me and every other "educated" collector knows what these are and wouldn't buy them for any more than $50-$70 .
However the uneducated buyers think nothing of spending $200-$400 for these thinking they are getting something "Special" Just because they are in a flash box:dodgy:
So what if the buyer has more than 2500 ebay feedbacks. What does that tell you.If the case is top quality
and the coins are just as good. Not everyone who buys this sort of stuff is stumbling around in the dark.

it tells me that this particular buyer is stupid if the previous 2500 purchases were in fact coins:angel:
There are far worst scams going on than the proof boxes,as i said in the other thread i purchased several in the 1970's(contained the normal Unc. coins) and the guy i purchased them from was a work mate at ANZ Data Processing and had no interest in Coins,he said he got them from his Father(ANZ Bank Manager) who was gifted them during the 1966 changeover. So either there were some sets released by the Reserve with normal Coins or the smarties got to work very early in the piece.Dealers i've spoken to over the years are very wishy-washy on the subject.
I have 8-10 of these cases lying around and I foolishly sold some last year.
If I knew what they would eventually be used for I would never have sold them.
If you look on the Completed listings for 1966 Proof sets you will see a "Plethora" of the Uncirculated sets in the proof boxesand most of the sellers have sold multiples of these:dodgy:
One of the sellers actually bought 2 of these cases from me to use for this :dash1:

Yes Basil I have been told by a dealer that the Ram had 1966 proof boxes with UNC coins instead of proof coins but don't
know if there was a price difference
then i'd reckon they were specimen coins then
WOW that would make them way more than a normal proof set, depending on mintage of course
At least the coins listed aren't the usual scam idiots listing shit varieties calling them rare wishing for thousands BIN price
I appreciate genuine packaging but not swapped coins, pre 1984 mint sets are prime examples
I wonder if those bank cases of the 1966 (In unc?) were a part of operation fast buck?
but again , there is nothing to say that the coins weren't swapped by staff as well
but a beautiful mint set would look great in those cases
Quotebut a beautiful mint set would look great in those cases
The proof set looks even better :)

I have a vague memory the Reserve Bank,Sydney office at least, were presenting these to Corp. customers, both Oz. & Foreign Banks,in 1966.
