Title: 5¢ and 10¢ varieties
Post by: JeffH on July 23, 2015, 07:19:13 AM
I have a large quantity of 5¢ and 10¢ coins to noodle -nearly 3kg of each. So I thought I should prepare myself a check list of what to particularly look for.

I notice our wiki does not have much information on production varieties so am thinking such check lists could be a good basis for a wiki entry.

Apart from what's in Maccas there does not appear to be much information available. So I am requesting anyone with more information to post it here.

For starters, here is my preliminary check list for 10¢. [5¢ might take a little longer because many more variations with them.]

10¢
1966         Various angle upsets reported
1972           Low mintage
1977         Low mintage
1981§   Canberra mint      normal obverse
Wales mint      Obverse text closer to rim -slightly less common
1985           Very low mintage
1991           Very low mintage
1997           Low mintage
1999§   Two obverse dies #
            Lettering normal
Lettering further from rim (Do I have these the right way around?)
2001§   Two obverse varieties #
Large head with "IRB" all spaced
Small head with "IR" spaced and "RB" joined
2008§   Two different obverse text styles #
2011           Very low mintage
No circulation 10¢ made in 1986, 1987, 1995 or 1996.
§ Good photos required for wiki.
# Confirmation on which is less common type would be nice.

1977 added and 2011 changed to "very low mintage".

The 1999 large head (text close to rim) and 2001 I R B are the rarer ones.
I think the 1999 text far from rim was used first but I am not completely sure.
What are the two 2008 varieties and where did you hear about them?

A couple of 5 centers you may or may not be aware of. I don't claim to know too much about this except to say that in my earlier days of collecting a member of the old forum sold me these.

1981 5 Cent
Depending on how you see it, second last or last hair curl evident at lower neck. Purchased as London or Canada mint.

Maccas says "Another obverse die has been detected that features a longer and thicker text a blunted '2' and elliptical zeros". I have never found one that seems different to every other one from that year.

Maccas gives that as Canadian mint.

Oops! Sorry Jeff.

Don't forget the 1966 10c can be rotated.

Ah I see - my take on that was a new die was introduced for 2008 coins though I didn't get the impression there was a transition period in 2008 (though I guess it's possible).

Perhaps Greg, when he is over printing and delivery dramas, may be able to tell us more on that.
