Post by: 6eor6e6 on July 12, 2015, 09:47:01 PM

Hello, I brought a 5 cent Roll, Mystery Date the other week and have just opened it to expose a coin dated 1985 ! Cant be right ? (5 cent 1985)
I thought they only had mint sets and proof.
I checked the second coin in roll it was the same.
Will get to some pics shortly
Can anyone enlighten me please.

Thank you

These are indeed a "Mint set only" issue, But as there were 170,000 issued in mint sets the odds of finding one at MS68 in a roll (There are currently 8 of these ) or better is pretty remote.
Still an interesting find tho :yahoo:

I think it's a great find and hope that they are all 1985.  How they got into a mint roll is a mystery though.  You could do well with them by cherry-picking the best ones and getting them slabbed for re-sale (if you think they're good enough).

It's probable that they're the only 50 x 1985 5c that have been placed in a mint roll, so price ways, who knows?

BTW,  :welcome: to the forum! :wavemulticolor:

Thank you for your interest and thoughts,
Currently stunned and unsure how to proceed with find, have only checked as far as the second coin and understand that roll is defunct as a roll in normal circumstances. Dont think this is normal, not so sure if circumstances change that.
I suspect the roll to be all 1985 ?? and would be nice.
Cant imagine one single roll slipped through the net, maybe there were others that were simply smashed open into a till. ??
If continue to unwrap roll will be happy to post photo regardless of contents.
Had my share of being shafted, with rolls turning up with loose ends, small tear and crappy coins from so called reputable dealers, may of just slipped through there net ?. Its good to have win. Hope to sell for as much as I can, also like to keep a couple so it may be unravelled.

Thanks George
PS. Cost me $16.70 to door, was hoping for 1988

That's gotta be a win, any way you slice it.

At this point, it's an ex-roll anyway. The former roll has lost its value, other than to determine provenance. So document it thoroughly, removing and photographing the contents one by one. You have no other choice if you want to know if it's real or not.

Needless to say, handle the coins with kid gloves, and get them into 2x2's or saflips.

To slab or not to slab? Probably not worth it. You're competing with $40 MS66's and the like, so you'll probably not recover the costs.

Maybe write an article about the find for CAB? TBH, I think the real value here is in the story, not the coins. This roll shouldn't exist, and it has significance as a result, assuming it's real, naturally.

Oh, and contact the mint about it. Maybe they might have some insights.

And I wouldn't be in a hurry to sell just yet either.

If this story is true it would require a video of unopening to make me believe this

As much as it erks me, cant be blamed for finding it hard to believe. Would like to go further than a video. Fulvio has made recommendations that I like, what I was hoping for, some direction in the best way to deal with this for prove of authenticity and HOW ?, if all 1985.
The roll is wrapped up and away for now, still unknown to what is past the second coin, trying not violate any more.
As suggested will contact the mint today, considering a large dealer, ? first see what the Mint has to say.
runway's  of video has food for thought. Maybe at a coin show, could make right dill of myself, give them a laugh.

Thanks again and to Fulvio

Unfortunately RAM won't help you
Take the roll to a genuine ANDA dealer for further advice

it don't matter what roll it was, once it opened it not worth much if anything, I would say you have got your value from the fun it has created.
I doubt that coins from a roll would have value in it, they probably have marks on them, and the condition would not be able to compete with a coin from a min set.
tho each coin could be worth a $1 or $2, just for the novelty of it.
actually the best thing to make a quick buck would be to try and make a budget 5c set, you'd get at least $11 for that

Appreciate thoughts,
Roll x roll looked like RAM has the larger print FIVE CENTS $2 printed on it showing may have RAM in the next layer.
Tried calling RAM, sent email to get response of questions to my questions, fair enough i could of been clear, so did so and waiting.
Lifes to short to be miserable (mirror)
At least triggers opted for the top dollar he could of offered $1
Genuine ANDA dealer (Genuine ?) added to list of options.
Looking and searching for the near correct direction to take before any action is taken.
This x roll was a tail tail.

Thanks for help George
PS will keep posted

hi George
the RAM rolls have clear Royal Australian Mint text - usually twice along the length of the roll
like this one

Keen to see if the roll is what you think it is ie containing full coins of same date
