[attachment=3254][attachment=3253]I need evaluation on a 1881 half sovereign. Has crest or shield with foliage below shield. also young queen is 180 deg out on reverse side. Melbourne mint. i think its quite rare but am looking for some experienced eyes and heads to advise on worth of coin. This coin is for , obviously this coin has been a private collection for many years. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. photos attached. sorry about the quality of the photos. first time taking this style of pic. post or call 04********
Not a sov collector, so can't really comment authoritatively, but it looks good to me.
However, be advised that new accounts aren't allowed to participate in trading until reaching 50 posts, so I would remove the part about it being for sale, and the phone number, before you get stomped on. :)
sorry, just joined and had a few turkeys before posting. have waited all day for acceptance into forum. was to inebriated after state of origin to read the terms and conditions. sorry if i offended anyone saying the coin is for s***. post corrected. thanks for the warm welcome
is it rare? how rare? my Mate has inherited it from his father. His dad was a collector of many things. even helped rebuild the ghan. maybe a hidden gem... any help or info would add to the excitement. many thanks in advance. macka
Looks like a full sov to me. Worth around $5-600 in good xf
How much does it weigh?
This i dont know. will weigh tomorrow. $500 to $600????? are we talking about the same coin? only one i can find is in the Melbourne museum! The one in Melbourne museum has George slaying the dragon not the young queen, also planchet(i think this is what it is called) is not 180 deg out like the coin i display. does the foliage below Shield/crest also make it different? i am sure many people will find this coin interesting. all comments appreciated. macka
What you have there is a type 3 Shield Sovereign, the half Sovereign has NO wreath below the shield :ok:
Yours looks to be in about AU50-AU55 condition , valued at about $420- $560 .

One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams
Perth mint ask
Gold AUD 1,567.31
Buy - Refinery Primary Purchase Price - AUD1,527.05 per gold ounce.
darn it can't do the maths!!!
the gold isn't pure
serial HHHEELLPPP plze
i'm home today and the hubby is at work , he always does the maths for me
7.99g=0.2569 toz
0.2569x$1527.06=$392.28
and 91.7% of that is $359.72
I bought 13 X 1966 fifty cents off that FB page
so I figure that I have 4.3 troy ounces silver in that lot
hummm didn't pay bullion mind you but the coins are nice enough
and Perth mint silver is $20.74 ask today (bid $19.87)
sorry to go off topic macka but gold and silver have a base metal value before the other pricing factors kick in

I think you're confusing Coin vs Medal orientation.
Australian coins are struck with medal orientation. That is, both Obverse and reverse are the same way up. The coin is flipped about the vertical axis.
US and some other coins are struck with coin orientation. The Obverse is upside down, and the coin is flipped about the horizontal axis.
There is nothing unusual about your coin.If it
WERE an upset, as rotation errors are called, yes, it would be much more valuable. As per 2001 CoF $1 upsets, which come in just about every angle. Search for pics of Goldseeker's clockface with precise 30° offsets as an example.
The value of your sov comes down to gold content and condition, as per the bluesheet entry linked.
sorry about inaccurate gold value, I actually just cut and pasted that but I think he gets the gist.
so do you think we will hear from this member again?
Well I really appreciated getting the formula for future reference
People come and go here so we will see
Some of us are keepers!
Robbiegal if you ever want to know the metal value of a coin Google the coin details with NGC at the end eg 1910 1/2 sovereign Australia NGC
Then go to the NGC coin guide and you will get the asw/agw
Times that by the current metal value and you have the melt value
That's how I do it
oh thank you for that
