I have a small number of NZ coins; 1c to $2. I am sorting them out and put the best into a folder. Are there anything to look out for as we have in Aus, different size portraits etc? I don't know anything about them so any info is appreciated.
1997 $2 as I believe they were pulled from circulation because of poor minting.
There's a couple of varieties of the 1988 50c though I can't remember which one is rarer.
http://www.coinerrors.co.nz/wordpress/ has some pretty good information.
I'm not sure if there are different sized portraits but we have a new member who may be able to answer your questions, and hopefully we can all learn something from him.
The portraits on NZ coins changed the same years as they did on the Aussie coins. I guess you already know this but just in case, here are the years for the portrait changes.
1st Portrait 1967 - 1985
2nd Portrait 1986 - 1998
3rd Portrait 1999 - now
Hey Nevol :-) Noticed some links to my site from this forum so thought I had better sign up lol.
NZ coins have a number of die faults/ cuds etc in the later years 1995-2005. the more popular ones still seem to be the ones in the price guides over here but others are becoming more popular as they are hard to find
2 Cent
1967 Bahamas mule
5 Cent
1967 No Sea
1967 No Tail
1968 No Sea (coins were only released in sets)
50 cent
1967 Dot over 1 50 cent
1988 Missing rope Die change on ships rigging and designers initials are different to previous circulating years. I found last year these 2 dies were used in 1984 sets also. Research is still being done on this but it appears the mint reverted to use a prototype die (that is still in use today)
As for $1 coins they are full of die faults I recently finished an update of the 2013 $1 coins here http://wp.me/P4A88C-1T2
If you find anything interesting in your NZ coins I would love to know to list in the future on the site (if I ever catch up on taking photos)
nice
and welcome!
:welcome: to TACF! It's great to see a newbie posting too. :wavemulticolor:
Thanks Robbiegal and Nevol.
I will have to look back at past NZ coin discussions to see what else has popped up over the years :-).
Oh and one note on the 1997 $2 coin mentioned above. It is slightly miss reported that they were sorted and removed from circulation. they actually did not release the remainder when they found the issue with them not working in vending machines / parking meters but never actively searched to remove them or asked the banks to. They are still rather common and you can normally find some in a few bags of $2 coins from the bank. I had someone that would buy them from me every few weeks at $3 each but he would never tell me why but I suspect it was to mess with the parking meters lol.

You might regret that when you see all my NZ threepenny errors! :winkextra:
Haha so true Nevol I noticed those here as well. I spent ages looking at them on the other forum. I have been meaning to email you sometime about these.

Happy to help you with your research if I can.

Great site by the way - that stuff on distinguishing mint set coins from circulation coins is extremely useful.
Do you have any hints on distinguishing the 2004 and 2005 circulation and mint set coins? I couldn't pick anything obvious from the pictures, except maybe the shape of the zeroes.

Thanks Mister T . The site talks up alot more time than I expected but it will get there one day. I have about 20-30 5 cent coin faults photographed but just need to edit them before uploading. I keep getting side tracked with roll hunting haha.
2005 is easier than 2004 from what I am told as the designers initials do not match up the same as the set variety. Sadly I do not own sets for these years (or many of the later years) as they got to expensive for something that was often a lot different than a circulating coin. I have been asking dealers for any broken or damaged sets they might have so i can break some coins out to get new photos but so far no luck.
One other thing is that our NZ 2014 coins are starting to be released into circulation and they have had a Dies recut with a bit of an upgrade. I have taken the first photos http://wp.me/P4A88C-27q more will follow when I get a chance

I have a 2c Bahamas mule very undervalued these were minted by RAM IN Canberra
Love NZ coins
Quote from: 'runway' pid='75869' dateline='1437400225'I have a 2c Bahamas mule very undervalued these were minted by RAM IN Canberra Love NZ coins
Not minted by RAM but by Royal Mint at Tower Hill, London.
I agree Runway they are very undervalued but I think it has something to do with the amount of UNC coins available. There is almost always at least 1 for sale on trademe.co.nz. There was alot of research about this Mule last year done by Paul Bicknell (a member of the Royal Numismatic society of NZ) where he managed to get copies of letters between the Royal mint and the NZ Government at the time as well as a heap of other information.
Sadly most of the NZ Mules are almost impossible to find and some collectors that do have them have multiples as they were found in the same mint bags. I still have not had that luck and have searched thousands of mint rolls / bags lol
PCGS graded mules (in MS grades) have big prices asked for them. But they are worth buying in lesser grades I think -long term price is likely to go up. And even 'lesser grade' probably means a rather good coin as most were plucked from circulation quickly; before they had much exposure to wear and tear.
The going prices on TradeMe now seem to be quite a bit higher than what I paid for one from there a few years ago.

Maybe I should get some of my stuff graded lol.
Just out of interest and I should probably ask this in a different thread but where do most aussies buy coins from online? is it ebay or somewhere else. In NZ we have trademe as the main place we buy and sell but I have been looking to sell on ebay recently just not so sure about it. Wife does not allow me to keep as many coins as I would like but it is hard not to bring mint rolls home when I work at a bank
yeah no1 site would be ebay for buying coin, selling too for me (they just have the biggest audience)
I have also used quicksales - I got a threepence blob from this site
silver stackers - used this site, good if you only want fillers and bullion grade stuff, they are known to clean junk silver (person to person private buying and selling)
there are the obvious company sites
royal Australian mint
Perth mint
and the dealer sites
then you get the coin auction sites
pity that you don't work in an aussie bank NZC !!!
I agree eBay but worth checking out Facebook 'Buy, Swap & Sell' pages too. Apparently they pushing to get more into the sales market -much like what eBay used to be before they started favouring 'commercial' sellers and stiffing the 'Mums and Dads' sellers.
Another thing; anyone who does some noodling (or even keeps an eye on their change) will know that original type NZ decimals turn up frequently in Australian circulation. Last few weeks I have been picking up some rather high grade 20¢ from my noodling -EF and up. Someone is feeding them into the pond. My theory is that people who have been sitting on them have now found out that they can't take them next time they go to Aotearoa ( I love that name) as nobody will take them.

Thanks - I don't have any a 2004 or 2005 set either but I do have a 2006 set so I might take a look at it some 2004 coins I have.

OMG, I'll have to find them, sorry AJ, my memory has gone walkabout.
All good mate I know exactly what that's like :friends: They'll turn up when you least expect it :)
Talking about NZ coins, I'm looking to buy this coin for a friend, but I know nothing about NZ pre-decimals.
Does it look OK to you guys? Maybe one of you has one that you might like to sell too.

Looks okay to me Triggersmob. All the ones I've seen have bagmarks (that one is no exception) but they're pretty minimal. Price looks okay to me too (I didn't check the catalogue but I paid $40 for one in similar condition earlier in the year).
I've never used it sorry but there's the kiwi site "trade me"

If I was chasing one, I'd be very inclined to use Trade Me, as they are the best place for NZ coins. I bought heaps of mine from there. I had one particular seller who use to look after me and I could probably dig up his name if you're interested Steve.
I have purchased from the same seller and highly recommend him too.

I would agree Nevol. Trademe only access a rather small market in NZ so stuff often goes rather cheap and not a lot of Aussies have been purchasing on there. Aussie stuff especially I sold a bunch of nice stuff recently for not much more than spot price as i have not tried ebay selling yet lol.
Here are some 20¢ that turned up in a $100 bag of noodling last week. Worth keeping an eye on your change if good ones are floating around.
Very nice Jeff. I would have to buy thousands of old coins to find a nice bunch of coins like that lol. I have boxes of old coins ( I pick them up for lower than face value on trademe lol) but struggle to find ones like that
Yes I find heaps of kiwi 5's & 20's and a few 50's and even found a 1967 50 with the dot, find them that often that unless they're really nice they go back into the pond so if anyone wants me to keep an eye out please let me know :ok:
wow just had a rough count and have about 120 of the big kiwi 20 cent and a few small
Quoteunless they're really nice they go back into the pond
Same here -only keep the best ones now. I have a container with the years sorted into ziplock bags and have put a limit of ten coins of each year to keep. Every now and then I make up a set to sell on eBay and then replenish my bags as I stumble across good ones.
I have never found a 2005 but don't expect to. Finding one of them would be a bit like finding a circulating 1985 Australian 20¢ (I have found more wavy 2s than those).
From my New Zealand catalogue "4,000,000 struck, est 178,000 released". The only 2005 20¢ I have were purchased from the dealer that Nevol alluded to previously.
Yeah I have 2004 and 2006 but no 2005.
Is this the 20c you are talking about. I found this in the pond.

Thankyou and will do.
PP has a graded one, http://www.thepurplepenny.com/1556,new-zealand-1965-sixpence-pcgs-ms64-and-broken-wing-variety-pcgs-ms65-gem-uncirculated.html
Ouch that is a graded one alright but not so sure where the price comes from over 3x the catalogue.
Also keep an eye out for the earlier version of the broken wing from my experience it is harder to find
both types can be seen here

Actually Jeff, now that I think about it, maybe it didn't come from the pond, like most of my NZ coins, but might have come from you. Oops.
(I just checked the pieces of paper I have floating around on my desk and sure enough, it's on the list, sorry mate).
We need to finish that trade. You still haven't got back to me with a list of coins you would like from my swap list. Would you like me to send it again?
Where will I find this swap list you speak of Steve :)

 Yep!
Donald is a great guy has helped me get some errors to put on the website in the last few weeks so I must send him some of my stock photos for his trademe listings
If he does not have what you are after let me know I might have a few floating around that could be loaded to trademe or ebay
Don't worry you'll soon have enough posts to wheel and deal here :good:
Just had a look at the rules ;-)
My problem is I enjoy finding errors to much and can never really be bothered to sell them except when my wife spends some time in the study and I am told she will take them back to the bank if I do not sell some haha
:( yes mine just keep growing but I can't stop and constantly looking at the markets and what I find noodling so one day I'll have to do something with them, one day :winkextra:

Good luck! Hopefully it won't be a wasted effort.
Not a wasted effort I will get some better photos so that others can tell the difference in the future and it helps with an article I am writing at the moment.
Is New Zealand the only country silly enough to use one mint for circulating coins and another mint for set coins?
Here is the photos just taken of the difference between 2002 circulation and set types of the 5 cent coin

Do they still use separate mints?
Good image too - plenty of easy to see differences there.
We dont have coin sets any more sadly well we had a silver proof set last year but nothing yet full set wise this year. Back in 2006 or 2007 (don't quote me on the dates i cant find the info)they changed the composition of the coins in the sets anyway so they were really not even NCLT coins at all as they were completely different.
Nzpost are a disaster running this stuff they have no idea what people want and they prices were getting to high so people stopped buying and they thought that making the proof sets more expensive and removing the Unc sets would force more people to spend the money to get the proof's. Now to get a set it is a bit hit and miss I know people are looking at making sets but it is rather difficult as we only had 10 cent coins made in 2012 and 10cents & $1 coins made in 2013 it is a very small set lol. Saying that I should probably make a set with 2013 UNC 10 & 20 notes lol (perks of working at a bank ;-) )
WOW I don't think I like that as it trips me out, think I'm having a seizure :Alvarin_33: Please just use normal pic's as it's just as easy to see the difference or overlap them would be ok as well..sorry I can't handle flashy shit already being prone to seizures :(
Sorry AJ Fixed it for ya :)
That's much better, thank you so very very much I really appreciate it :friends:
That bottom coins is a nice lookin coin :good:

Umm interesting Barry I'll see what I have when I get back as I have a couple of notes.
I had a look and I only have a few old paper and a couple of their new polly notes..sorry they're not pre-decimal Barry :(
I cant even help much with the predecimal notes. Coins on the other hand give me 20 or 30 more post and I might be able to help. My wife calls me more of a hoarder than a collector but I have been trying to down size a lot this year
