UPDATE: Better Pics below!
So, I'm new to Australian coins, but this one's good right? :yahoo:
Can you give me a grade and value?
Thanks!

Yes for that year and denomination a very nice example.
The reverse does appear to have residual verdi present.
Grade, Aussie VF a little too much wear to go higher.
Sheldon maybe XF40
Value don't know, not very many are offered in this mid grade
but probably achieve A$150+ on ebay with no problem.

I will second that grading. Value wise I would put it at $100-120
I'd like to know where you can get a coin like that for $150 as the
ones Iv'e seen in that condition are at least double that if you can
find them. I have about $300 tied up in this one
http://www.pcgs.com/cert/32030163
Stevo! Don't get my hopes up! I wonder if it'd be worth having graded?
I agree with Steveo
that catalogue value is $700 and rising - easily a VF
but happy to offer you $150 for the coin!!
Quote from: 'matttheriley' pid='74623' dateline='1434693021'Stevo! Don't get my hopes up! I wonder if it'd be worth having graded?
Definately get it graded as they are very scarce in VF+ ,as Robbie said look up the value of XF40/45 on Bluesheet
I think that I can see hints or better of the 7 and 8th pearls. That is one mighty fine coin and I'd almost crawl over broken glass for a 1915 like that one. It's a keeper mate ... but the offer of $150 still stands!

I can see 8 pearls and not too much wear .
EF AU50-55 easy I would think and a fantastic start to your Aussie collection.
Well done Mate :good:
Yes they are much better pictures and I'd say AU50 as a minimum grade
which puts it over the $1k mark
I won't tell you how much I paid for this! I got it in a trade where all of the other coins I received easily covered my cost on everything I sent. The buddy I traded with knew it was a key date, so thanks to him! Passing good mojo his way!
Ok, now I've got to send it in. I guess I better sign up for PCGS. Or, do you think that NGC or ANACS would be just as good? Where is the market for this coin. Mainly OZ, right? What 3rd party grading company do you folks prefer?

PCGS is the only choice for grading IMO so if you are doing only 1 coin it might be easier to go through an agent/dealer.The big market for this coin would be in Australia but there would be some interest in the US.Ebay would be a good option if you are selling or even this site
It looks better than Very fine to me, somewhere in the extra fine area as it has 8 pearls.
Now that coin would look nice in my collection. My address is on the way.
No just kidding, the second set of pictures look like a totally different coin from the first pickies.
Very, very nice indeed.
I should take the pics again! I might end up with MS64RD!!!
The second pictures are substantially better in which case I would put it at AU50-53 and worth substantially more than my initial value.
matt
there is (as usually found on the 1915 half's) some surface corrosion going on (OF AUSTRALIA), so pcgs (no expert here mind you) might label it as having environmental damage
if you aren't experienced with the old aussie bronzes then best not to tinker with it but in expert hands it could be better preserved - it is very light tone for the year (they are usually much darker).
no matter if pcgs found the surfaces unsuitable - you have an excellent rarer date in a very high grade for the year
i'd put it as a whisper on EF or better
please put the coin in an archival coin flip and don't tinker with it if you don't know what you are doing - each beggared up tinker will cost you inherent value
Do you think a soak in acetone would hurt it. I've also got some verdi-care. Someone at the CCF created it for copper coins. Or, should I just send it in as is?
Right now it's sitting in an air-tite capsule, so it is safe until I decide what to do with it.
What the heck is Verdi care?
QuoteWhat the heck is Verdi care?
A fluid that is claimed to improve the appearance of old coins, reduce and stabilise verdigris and will not harm them.
I have tried it and it does improve the appearance of old pennies and suchlike; but it also gives them an unnatural sheen. It is touted as "conserving" the coins as opposed to "cleaning" them. The developer is a chemist and on CCF as 'badthad' (if I remember correctly).
It does rinse off in water if you don't like the result. And it is rather expensive.
If you want to try a substitute that I have tested and seems to give exactly the same results try "Armor All" vinyl restorer.
It doesn't reduce any verdigris -it masks it, similar to what you will see if you wet a coin.
I have a few rough, old pennies I treated at least 12 months ago and put away. I must dig them out and see how they look now.
thanks for that
I think WD40 is also pretty good but have never used it myself
in the case of a 1915 halfpenny with 8 pearls I think - leave well enough alone is in order
I tried the Verdi-care and did not think it worked any better, never took off here.
Acetone if there is a lot of gunk.

:agreed:
If it was just an ordinary old run of the mill coin, I might say give it a go, but if you tinker with it you could reduce its' value significantly.
Super coin.!
Just to put your minds at ease. I am NOT going to tinker with it. I am currently looking into sending it in for grading with PCGS. I'll keep you all informed! Thanks for the advice!
Good luck
So I signed up with PCGS! I just received my 4 free vouchers in the mail. Now to find 3 other coins to send in? Hmmm? I'll keep you posted!
Ok, it only took me three weeks to get the nerve up to send this in! I just sent it registered mail, hopefully it will be there next week!
I didn't use the free coupons; I couldn't find any other world coins worthy to submit with this one, so I did it at a one shot. It's gonna cost me nearly $90 just for the one coin! But, I figure if it comes back AU, then I'm in like Flynn!
Cheers, I'll let you guys know how it goes!
Good luck with the grading Matt. I have my fingers crossed for you. :)

For a single coin it would probably be cheaper to use a dealer to submit it. I'm pretty sure that Drake does it for about $60 and you would have peace of mind knowing that there wouldn't be any issues or mistakes made on the submission forms or postage.

Matthew is not in Australia Neal but he could go through one of his local dealers for just a few coins as it would be cheaper

I live in the USA, and I did check with my local dealers, all of whom wanted 60-80 and didn't sound too enthusiastic about doing it. So, I'll do it, plus I have four free submissions for some other coins in the next year I'll redeem.
Quoteall of whom wanted 60-80
The dealers you spoke to are obviously rip off merchants :dodgy:
It only costs $20 per coin with a World Economy submission and the postage is only 25 cents per coin with a submission of 26+ coins in the US :ok:
You can get this coin graded here in Australia for Between $30 and $40 and that includes the ridicules postage costs to and from the US .
I had to select the Regular tier service, because the value exceeds $300 economy limit.
$10 Handling Fee, plus $32 grading fee, plus $5 required PCGS secure fee for foreign coins, plus $20.95 return shipping, plus the $20.68 shipping fee for registered mail there = $88.63
The dealers I quoted didn't sound like they submitted very often, so they were going to push all of the fixed costs of the order onto me. Oh, well, I'll take matters into my own hands, I guess. I have some USA coins, I'll send in with my four feebies, so its ok.

Look for a dealer who sends batches of coins off at a time, This will cut the cost of shipping about 80% (or should do)
The costs you were quoted is for a single coin submission and I don't know of any dealer that only sends one coin in at a time.
Also BS about the value and get in on the economy submission If you coin goes missing you are only covered for $100 anyway, I and I would imagine most other people do the same thing :ok:
Like you say you have your 4 coin free submission you can use that, Be aware tho that you cannot send a mixed submission in for this.
They have to be all the same type of submission, eg you can't put Aussie coins in with US coins on the same submission :ok:
Crickey, if he is in the US it should be cheaper (especially due to lower postage) . 60-80 that he mentioned is presumably USD at that so an even bigger rip off ($60 Australian is about 40-45 USD).
I thought that it was at least fifty dollars to get the australia pre decimals graded. The modern submission is for post 1966 isn't it?
The coin has made it to LA according to the tracking #. Should be in the PCGS grading room soon!

Now comes the loooooooongggg Wait :)
Keep us up to date Matt :ok:
Oh, I will! I paid for the regular service, so hopefully it is only a loooongg Wait!
Post office shows it's been delivered! No activity on PCGS's website.
Don't do it Mate it will send you Nuts checking PCGS every day
Believe me Been there Done that , It can take 30 days or more for a World regular submission to be graded :dash1:
Ok, there is a grade posted on the PCGS website! It is still listed as "in process" on the status. Any guesses what the wizards assigned it?
It has to be either AU53 or AU55 .I'll go with AU53 as there is a bit of wear on it
What's the book value for those grades?
Quote from: 'matttheriley' pid='79427' dateline='1442356445'What's the book value for those grades?
Bluesheet value is AUD$1500 and AUD$1800 but sales figures are a bit
down so would depend on the interest and competition etc
Cool, thanks Stevo! Where do you think is the best place to sell? Not a lot of interest here in the states, but I am reluctant to ship a coin of this value overseas. I don't know, what do you guys think? I was thinking about letting you guys have first pick and battle it out for it, since you've been so helpful through this process! Is there anyone looking for a AU55 BN 1915-H 1/2 d?
I am so excited about the grade!

Congratulations on the grade mattheriley

That's a great result congradulations Matt. I was very close with the grading and almost nailed it.I would be very interested but just spent $1400 on a proof florin so that will take me a few weeks to recover
No worries, its going to be a bit until its back in my hands, I think.
Trout and Stevo,
When you guys send stuff in you have to select the PCGS Secure option (mandatory for world coins, I believe). My question is, when do the images become available on the PCGS website?
I'd like to see what their image of the coin looks like.
Oh and btw, they shipped the coin yesterday!

Now that PCGS is providing Good images with the "Secure" option I choose it on every coin Now :good:
Still waiting on PCGS to upload their images, here is my quick and dirty attempt! At least I have it in hand and I don't think I'm dreaming. Now to decide if I can afford to keep it!

I would sell it in a heartbeat.
You could always buy a cheaper grade
along with a bundle of other coins. :)
it is very nice
got a pic of the other side?
and a BIG thank-you to the forum members for guiding you with this coin too
Well done Matt :good:
Ok, I've got it listed for a ridiculously high amount, mostly because I don't really want to part with it, but I guess if someone were to make me an offer I couldn't refuse...
