I am starting to collect these coins, I can't be the only one doing this .
So drag em out and take a few images and "Share" :)
A couple of sets I picked up from the post office yesterday.

Yes the 3d and 1d coins are rather nice :)
I couldn't help myself and bought this set.
Scanned images so I have NO idea of the quality of the lustre but I don't have a young head Victoria set yet.

yep - the Maundy bug has bitten you
they are beautiful coins and to know that they have been held by the same hands of the depicted king/s and queen/s makes them even more spectacular
Has someone got/found what the minting numbers are of all the Maundy Sets?
I thought that for each year there were as many sets given away to a commoner who is the same age of the monarch
so if the Queen was 89 then 89 people who are the same age are given a set at a special presentation
usually commoners to my understanding
if queenie was 45 then 45 people who are 45 years old are given a set
I understand it was under the alms for the poor

Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='74490' dateline='1434532171'Has someone got/found what the minting numbers are of all the Maundy Sets?
The mintage figures are available via the PCGS population reports on their site.
The mintage figures are interesting because they not only vary between sets they also vary between denomination, here are a couple of examples;
1983 Maundy coins
1d = 12,000
2d = 7,232
3d = 4,488
4d = 4,158
1902 Maundy coins
1d = 21,000
2d = 14,000
3d = 8,976
4d = 10,000
Just beautiful!
in one of the links that I put up it aid that they used to give to the previous Maundy recipient each year then add on the new ones the following year, so that could add up but they don't do that anymore
Here is the 1883 Young Head set

These little buggers are tricky to image, I am slowly getting a few of these sets together :yahoo:
Nice trout. The Maundy coins seem to be very beautifully toned in general (due to the velvet bag or box they are kept in?) Otherwise keep an eye out at Heritage and you can find some really nicely toned coins in general.

Those velvet lined boxes can be Buggers to coins , remember what they did to the 1966 proof sets and everyone just had to dig them out every now and then with their fingernails and grotty fingers :dash1:
The Maundy sets seem to fare better , I think because they are so small and light that there seems to be less friction rub problems with them and being so delicate most people were afraid to handle them.
I have bought a couple of "blast white" sets that I now fear have been dipped in the past and they fade away into the shadows when put up against a naturally toned fully lustrous coin :yahoo:
In reality these are a purely NCLT/Grannybait coin But they were one of the first to be produced by the Brits (as far as I am aware) and they are exquisite with a real sense of history about them.
Yes I am "Smitten" by them But hay that's collecting for ya :)
I just received another 1905 set, Nice coins but I'm a little concerned at the lack of toning on these.
I bought them mainly to get a 3d coin for my other 1905 set that didn't grade.

I have a 1906 set on its way from Greece and should be here next week some time :good:
I also have two sets awaiting grades at PCGS, another 1905 set and a 1883 set.
These have been there since 25/8/15 and I should get the results shortly (I hope) :)
Nice one mate, interesting to see what grades you get :)
I just picked up a 1906 set from the post office and they are "On Par" with the 01, 02 sets I got earlier this year :)
I will post images when I get home :ok:
Here are the images as promised.
I am having problems looking through my viewfinder with this blocked up head of mine that's why these are not up to my usual standard.
These have amazing lustre and on a bad day at PCGS they will grade at PL66 :ok:

Hope the head clears up soon.
These are very interesting. I have to be honest that I didn't know anything about these really so I spent some of last night reading up on them and searching for some for sale. Amazing how reasonably priced some coins from the 1600's are. Its a nice collection you are growing.

For what they are and the tiny mintages, they are surprisingly affordable :good:
But like any other coin the GOOD ones are pretty tough to find.
If you are thinking about going into these stay away from the AT offerings mainly from the US and most of the really darkly toned coins .
Also if the coins are Blast white , they have probably been dipped .
You CAN find nice coins in the darkly toned and blast white ones but to be on the safe side look for the coins with a "Pastel" tone without surface hits/marks :ok:
I agree that they are an affordable collection and you have given us some wonderful examples of them but I don't see myself getting them.
Who knows what next year holds though..

I bought these from a well known dealer graded Ch Unc , 3 went Unc Details (Cleaned) and one went AU Details (cleaned).
I must have had my beer glasses on when I sorted these to send to PCGS :dash1:
I put my faith in the dealers grades thinking they knew better than me and ignored what was in front of me.
I won't do that again

Yes that set of Mark looks rather nice :)
I would rather Not say who i got the cleaned set from as I haven't had a problem before
with these people and I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they just made a mistake
with these.
I will see what happens when I send them back for a refund :ok:
I have been informed by Iswright ln Adelaide that there will be NO refund because I removed the coins from their shitty 2x2's.
I wish that I had not have trusted this mob and paid via bank transfer, If I had paid via PayPal it would be a whole different story.
Not at all happy with this mob, looks like they are showing their true colours after selling me overgraded coins with issues.

Mate, If you ever see one of these coins "in hand" you will know exactly why I have started to collect them :)
I won these on eBay in the "Wee hours" this morning on a proxy bid that I had forgotten about, could be a "Pig in a Poke" or they could be rather nice.
I don't have the 1904 set yet so I thought they were worth a look.
The sellers feedback on these sets is pretty good as well.
I will post images of them when they arrive in 2-3 weeks from the UK :ok:

Now these are going to be very interesting to see your pic's mate as i think they'll look better in hand, well they'd wanna because they're pretty crappy pic's.
These are my newest acquisitions.
These will add "Depth" to the 1902-1910 sets I am compiling at the moment :yahoo:
The highest grades at PCGS for these are
1d 63
2d 64
3d 64
4d 64
These are right up there with these and will complement the PL set I have at the moment :)
Images complements of Markn and PP, I doubt that I will be able to produce better images but I will try when I get them "In Hand: :ok:

Thanks PP.
I read that article before and was what made me decide to buy this particular set.
These are a totally different set to the PL set I already have and PCGS recognise them as being different as well.
I will be sending these off to PCGS but I don't expect them to grade super high due to the way these were produced and handled.
A interesting bit of "History" with these and they will look rather nice in their new slabs and the fancy new box I am getting to store them in :good:
QuoteNo, my coins are circulation strikes. The matte proofs are quite distinctive and mostly look very much like the coins you've just bought.
No worries, I have had a really good look at these Matte Proof and yours don't look anything like them :ok: and congratulations on your new ranking of #1 Well Done Mate :yahoo:
I have just had a good look at the PCGS pop reports for the 1902 Matte Proof coins.
I found it interesting to note that only three denominations of the coins out of 13 different coins that make up the long set graded made it to PR65 they are the 6d, 2/- and the Crown.
All the rest top graded at PR64 except the 1d and the 2d which only made PR63.
Looking at the images provided it also looked like to me that the lower graded coins ( PR61-63) had some attempt to remove the "Rub" marks inherent on these particular coins :dodgy:
What an interesting set of coins these are and I would Love to be able to afford a Long set of these.
They may be the "Ugly Duckling" of the 1902-1910 Edward coins But they are quite unusual and Unique therefore "Desirable" as far as I am concerned :good:
Some new additions, Thanks to Mark and PP :)

That's a nice looking box loaded with graded coins, so where do you keep it? (Heh-Heh)
The box alone would be more valuable than most of the coins?
I don't know GS, $100 for the box but some of the coins are worth a lot more and especially now they've been slabbed..now my collection is a different story and yes the box would be worth more than a lot of the coins :winkextra:

An average set of Maundy coins can fetch $250-$400 Raw, a high grade PCGS graded set can attract quite a lot more at auction :)
I can fit 12 sets in this box , So $100 is a pittance compared to the value of the coins it can contain :ok:
Regardless, the setup looks good.

I was going to put these sets in a nice wooden case like I have my Brit Indian Set registry coins in but they only hold 24 Slabs.
As this box will house 50 slabs it is perfect for the 1902-1910 Maundy sets I am compiling at the moment as there are 10 sets to collect for this totalling 40 coins and it leaves me room to add the "extras" that I will undoubtedly have at the end of the day.

I have just had a look at the pop stats on PCGS regarding the Matte proof 1d coins and noticed that there is only 1x1d coin graded yet there are quite a few 2d, 3d and 4d coins graded for the 1902 sets.
Maybe it is common for the 1d coin to be damaged and upgradable and maybe this happened at the mint ??
I am only "musing" here But it does seem peculiar that there is only one of the 1d coins graded.
I picked up a nice 1903 set from the UK overnight :yahoo:
That just leaves the 1908, 1909 and the 1910 sets to be acquired :)

You do know that you are personally responsible for me collecting these in the first place.
If you hadn't given me that first 1905 set I would have been blissfully unaware of these beautiful coins.
Without your unselfish generosity I doubt that I would have discovered these wonderful little coins and I thank you for that my friend :yahoo:
Mark and PP have also been most helpful with these coins and I do greatly appreciate their help and advice :yahoo:
:blush2: I have no idea know what your talking about mate  Truly my pleasure and it just blows me away how quickly you've got the set together :good: I like them and always ask at all the shows "got any maundy coins" and some of the looks I get are quite funny
But I'm also running out of ideas for special little treats :scratch_one-s_head:

Some have come in the original boxes and yes they are silk lined.

The "original" packaging for maundy sets of this era (and I exclude the 1902 matte proof sets from this) is a felt bag. The boxes, while contemporary were not supplied with the issued sets. They were available for purchase from third parties for those who were interested in storing their sets in them.

I imagine the coins stored in the felt bag would be pretty knocked about by now.
Most of my sets have come with the contemporary case and are in pretty good nick.
The sets without the case are a bit hit and miss , some are good and some are not so good I like to get the sets in the old cases if possible :good:
All the coins that I have bought that came with the contemporary case have a nice pastel toning like this coin :)
This is a coin that I bought without a case from a dealer who graded it at Ch Unc, it came back AU details from PCGS :(
(http://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10019/shit.jpg)
So if you are thinking of buying these coins, Make sure that they have the nice toning and if they come with the old case then all the better :good:
Here is the 1904 set I picked up today, please excuse the rushed images.

For such a small coin they sure pack a lot of punch as "eye candy" :)
Getting the 1910 set is going to be "Tough", I had a look at the mintages they are pretty small.
1d 3,392
2d 2,998
3d 1,140
4d 2,755
Gee Trout, my Krause is confusing in relation to the Maundy sets. In my PDF version, the 1d, 2d and 4d's don't seem to get a mention? (Unless I can't see for looking). But the 3d shows the 1,140 you've mentioned as the mintage for the 3d "Prooflike" coins.
Regardless, good luck with your quest!
Afterthought ..... I guess since Krause only covers circulating issues, the 3d is the only Maundy coin with the same design as a circulating issue. (Der Uni ).
I took this from my 2015 42nd Edition of Krause.

I think I will give them a miss.
I asked for better images so they added the colour scans to the listing.

A bit extravagant but after purchasing 11 Maundy sets and paying the grading fees another $100 is a pittance, Besides it looks rather nice :)

I was just having a look at the PCGS pop reports for the 1902 Matte Proof coins and noticed that only 1 of each of the 1d and2d coins have been graded no 3d coin graded yet there are 14x 4d coins graded.
It seems a bit strange as most of the other years have a pretty even spread of graded coins, I wonder why just the 4d coins were sent as submissions without the rest of the set to be graded for this Matte Proof set ?

There must be more than one number for those coins. I've had about 4 of those sets graded myself. I think I still have three of them.
QuoteThere must be more than one number for those coins. I've had about 4 of those sets graded myself. I think I still have three of them.
Were your coins attributed as Matte Proofs or just Proofs ?
There are 1,2 and 3d PR coins and about 12 of each but NO PR 4d coin they are all Matte Proofs none have been attributed as Just Proofs.
I am thinking there may have been some confusion at PCGS as some of the Matte coins may have escaped being wiped at the Mint , Unless there were 3 different types of strikes for the 1902 Maundy sets.
These Maundy sets just get more and more interesting the deeper I delve in them :good:
Are these 1902 coins Matte Proofs ?
They don't have the "Look" of a normal PL set but they don't have the wipe marks of the Matte sets either.

Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='85662' dateline='1458039311'Those coins look nice and not too badly worn for coins that are 110 years old.
Most of these coins were highly prized and not only by the numismatists of the day.
As they were perceived to be given out by Royalty and people loved to hoard and protect anything associated with the Royal family in the UK , This probably accounts for the good condition these can still be sourced in, which I am most thankful of :)
If you haven't had the opportunity yet to see these coins "in hand" you can't yet understand the appeal of these tiny and beautifully made coins .

They look pretty good cobba :good:
QuoteI don't seem to be having much luck finding a decent 1902 set
No wonder if the seller keeps sending the wrong year. :blum3:

They are a nice set, pity I can't image the toning well without having the coin tilted and out of focus on one side :dash1:
One of these days I will "Nail It" :)

So far I have 15 sets and a few singles in my Maundy collection.
I Love the design on these coins and that compared to other Brit coins they have an incredibly low Mintage.
Also most of the time the toning these coins develop is "Exquisite" :good:
Here are two new additions for my Maundy collection :)
1740 penny from The Purple Penny graded AU58 by PCGS.

This 1786 penny is an eBay purchase that has yet to be graded.

I have a similar problem with deep cameo coins. How much "tilt" are we talking about? Are you making relatively small adjustments between shots?

I put a saflip under the edge of the coin, so not much of a tilt but enough to throw out the focus on the coin overall.
I can mess about with the lighting and get reasonable results But getting the true colouring of the coin in the image is pretty much impossible for me at the moment.

Wow, a saflip - that's way less than I would have thought. So, a mm here or there no more than that. I was thinking there is not much scope for mucking about with the light.
Thanks to reading this forum I've made decent strides improving my images but still a long way to go. I think the next step might be a better camera than my bog standard 12 megapixel.
Sorry, I better not get any further off topic.
More magapixels won't help with getting the colour right you need a camera with manual focus so you can adjust white balance etc . Plenty of photography sites on the web that will help.
Here are my images of this set I bought on eBay.

I think they are a big improvement on the ones in my set registry.

Is that supposed to be a matte set?

They were just listed as a 1902 set.
They don't look like my other Matte proof 1902 coins as they don't have that "Look" to them.

ok, well it's definitely not matte :) Just checking you didn't get the rough end of the proverbial :)

I paid $266 for the 1902 set and $294 for the 1908 set.
I have bought about half a dozen sets from this particular seller and haven't been disappointed yet.
I did get a Matte Proof 3d coin for a measly $22 delivered and it looks to be PR63 or better :good:

Have you had any mattes graded? What numbers did they get? There's a lot of the sets around and I have 3 or 4, all very similar because they come out of the felt lined 1902 long/short proof sets. Nasty toning and usually wiped.

This is my set so far, Plenty of room for improvement but the way these were treated at the mint I fear it will be rather difficult to source high grade coins for this particular set.

The PCGS images of my 1902 set are horrible so I took these and uploaded them to my set registry.
Not Perfect but I do think I am getting better at this coin photography thing :)
