Title: westpac's coin atms
Post by: Mister T on June 09, 2015, 08:23:45 PM
I recently had the chance to try out the coin ATMs that Westpac is starting to roll out. Quite convenient - the coin counter is pretty effective (and the reject slot can be profitable) though it's a bit annoying that the money isn't credited to your account until the next business day; the coin roll dispenser is pretty convenient too (no questions asked) although the internal supply doesn't seem to be unlimited.
Anyway, all that aside, I'm curious if it's now possible to withdraw and dump from the same Westpac branch. I don't know how Westpac or any bank operates but most of the rolls I got from the ATM were Armaguard (so I'm sure they weren't rolled at the bank). Would it be reasonable or safe to assume that coins deposited into the ATM get sent to Armaguard rather than redistributed by the bank branch? And if they're sent back to Armaguard it would be unlikely that the same coins end up back at the same branch - rather they could end up anywhere in the area the nearest Armaguard depot services?
Thoughts?

I've never been a fan of dumping rejects back into the same branch, and not just because you're bound to get them back.

All banks are either nett generators or consumers of coins, and you should not decrease this effect. Almost all CBA's are generators, while most banks in major retail centres are consumers, as are any banks with lots of commercial clients who deal in cash, yet can't justify direct deliveries.

If you drain a consumer, you force them to restock more heavily. This gives you more chances at UNC sacks.

OTOH, you cannot possibly drain a generator. No one person can counter the thousands of school kids and their mums who flood them with coin.

Therefore, drain the consumer and flood the generator. And work the notes in the opposite direction. After checking them for first/last prefixes, special numbers or errors, swap them for more coin from the consumer.

Round and round she goes, where it stops, nobody knows.

Oh, and as Goldy found out, this also stops you gaining a high profile through your 'wierd' activity, and ultimately getting banned.

---

Coin counters I don't like. They make mistakes, no matter what anybody says. Goldy has a spreadsheet overflowing with them. Therefore I will continue to heat seal rejects back into Armaguard/Mint bags and bypass the machines.

Roll dispensers are pretty useless I think. Armaguard don't roll new coin (although that may not be true in Brisbane, according to one of their employees there who says they get new coin in drums, not sacks), so you're only going to get recirculated coins just like over the counter, but with **FREE** Bonus roll marks! :( In many ways, getting rid of rolls was a step forward, because the extra bag marks from rough handling is preferrable to massive scrapes on the end coins.

Of course, just like cryptos, its all moot, because the change is inevitable. Look at any of the new branches everyone is building, and they're not at all friendly for us. We're going to have to get used to dealing with machines, like it or not, and seldom, if ever, seeing new coins, which will mostly be distributed through the major retailers.

Its all just money, after all, right? :(

Yeah I'd rather not dump at the same branch I withdraw from either but it is more convenient and if it's highly unlikely I'll be looking at the same stuff twice it doesn't bother me.
I'm not too concerned about the new stuff either: I want to get it but more often than not I'm looking for 1972 5c pieces etc so another round of bag marks won't really make a difference.

Does one have to put ones card in the ATM to get the coins for exchange of notes or does the atm change notes to coins regardless?

The machine I use at the CBA certainly requires that you put your card in Goldie.

I saw one at the CBA that I went to yesterday
people were certainly using it

I was on the hunt for the red $2 - alas no luck at the tellers

but they did say that the rolls of the reds may turn out to not be 100% red $2
they reckoned that they are mixed coins old and new

Doesn't work that way.

Depots that get loose coin (I only know of Brisbane at this stage) get them in drums, two per pallet.

These are dumped into the hopper of the rolling machine, which spits out rolls until empty.

It is possible that some rolls at the beginning and end of the batch may be mixed, if the hopper wasn't emptied before being reloaded. However one would think that the need to account for what's being produced would make this unlikely.

I've certainly never seen a mixed roll.

oh ta, guess she was fibbing then
so I can safely buy one of those rolls and it will all be the new red $2?

a couple of pre-decimal rolls that  I have acquired have had other years in them

If both ends are UNC reds, you can be 99% sure the rest of the roll is too.

As for the old rolls, they weren't packed as well, and may have been tampered with.

Also, it is after all an open hopper, and an operator could throw anything in there. I've found all manner of oddities in rolls, ranging from foreign currency to missing coins to 5ยข masquerading as $2. But never in an UNC roll (touch wood).

yeah true if the pre-dec rolls aren't tight rolls then tampering is a definite possibility - my coin dealer has told me that the rolls used to be done at the bank by the staff and other coins could be in the bin at the time
one of my 1964 halfpenny rolls had 11 brilliant unc 1961 halfpennies and a 1932 halfpenny - tis a pity that it wasn't a 1923 halfpenny!

whereas the tightly machine bound penny rolls were all the same year & mint i.e. Melbourne 1964 penny

maybe, I don't know much about banks except that they boast millions (or is it billions?) in profits from our credit cards and home loans

behind the tellers there was a bench with heaps of the larger single bag of bagged coins across the denominations - I was trying to see if the $2 bag was one with the red ones but seriously I couldn't tell and had to trust them when they said that hadn't any bags of them come in yet ... must admit I wasn't entirely convinced, but what can you do?

Quote from: 'robbiegal' pid='74267' dateline='1434106482'my coin dealer has told me that the rolls used to be done at the bank by the staff

Can't recall who it was, but a forum member sent me a set of pads for the various denomination rolls a few years ago. Pics and a discussion of these are in here: http://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=3579

Quote from: 'robbiegal' pid='74274' dateline='1434112853'I was trying to see if the $2 bag was one with the red ones but seriously I couldn't tell

These are the bags produced by the mint:

And these are the recirculated bags packed by Armaguard:

See the difference? Actually, its even more vivid now, as they've switched to solid colours.

Also, recirc. sacks have clear bags mixed in (or at least did last time I got some, that may have changed recently), whereas the UNC sacks are all triple-striped bags, as they're packed at the mint.

Yes I recall that you do. I think they're advertised as being for Westpac customers only and I guess they want to enforce that somehow.

I used to use those paper rolls when I worked I pubs, shops etc when I was younger
I thought the banks actually had rolling machines but it might have been the mint?

Hello,

Before the Coin bags you could get a pad of paper slips for rolling your Coins. Some people were not good at it, and other tried to include washers. Part of the reason we now have plastic bags. The staff would know who was dodgy and check then re-roll the Coins.

Its a real knack to make one of those hand rolls neat, straight and tight. I am hopeless at it.
I picked up many pads of the papers from the bank a few years ago and have used them for rolling up coins to put away. I get my wife to do it -when she left school she got a job in a bank and rolling up coins was a daily chore.
The secret is to leave a big overlap when you roll them back to get started and don't try to leave a small tuck under when you then go forward. If you have never tried it then that probably won't make any sense at all. :s
Rolling Coins With Just a Sheet of Paper (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3XSPCjKKAM) This fellow has no overlap in the roll and that is hard to do neatly and get them tight.

All the bank branches did have several rolling machines once. They were called "tellers".

Yeah,i was hopeless at it,when i first joined the ANZ Bank i was sent to a City Branch for a year to have a look how general Banking worked before being transferred to the Data Processing Centre.1 day a Week all new junior staff were sent to a training centre and part of that was how to roll coin, hated it along with batching,counting/storing coin/notes etc.
Stating the obvious but i wouldn't trust any rolled Coin on Ebay,to easy to manipulate,2nd hand coin rolling machines are cheap as chips these days, there were heaps for sale in the 1970/80's as Dept. stores & Co's downsized or closed.

You don't actually need a machine to get a passable tight roll.

I made my own printed wrappers for the Federation state coins, using an Armaguard wrapper as a template. The trick is having the right tool to fold the ends over... something like a butter knife will work.

They won't pass for machine rolls, since you can't avoid a series of creases, but they're quite serviceable.

Of course nowadays I seal them in plastic with a label insert. Much easier. ;)

Total disgrace people who roll coins and attempt to sell on as security rolls.
Resale is only reason for these grubs to roll coins for profit
