Nice, like the ten shilling one.
I have a few more not imaged yet, mainly all decimal, I think.
Does anybody know when people started collecting first and last prefixes? When I first had an interest in the late 70s I dont remember anything being mentioned about them.
:zomby: gotta love some of these smilies :laughingneqw:
Not sure. My 1980 Renniks gives all prefixes the same value but my 1985 Renniks gives first prefixes (but not last prefixes) a higher value.
I would suggest after Mick Vort-Ronald's writings in ACR late '70s
and the publishing of His "Australian Banknotes" 1979, interest by
General collectors began. :read:
Never really got into the Serial No. thing, it was only early this year
that I realised that a note I picked up in the '66 "Change Over"
was a First Prefix

Picked up a VG 95 $50 note today from local ATM
I found a AA99 $100 note practically unc just 1 little crease on the corner, I just put id back into circulation, not much of a premium for those!

Can you get first and last prefix note in you change, cos I herd you can buy them from the RBA.
I was thinking of getting some of next years, but I don’t collect notes so have no idea how to go about it.
What notes do the RBA provide, will they be low numbers or anything special
You can get them in you're change, can't answer the other questions :/

Is is possible to get them in change but most likely they will be used. The RBA over the last few years has give a once only of first and last prefix notes at a premium. There are a few hoops to jump through to get them. Else see your friendly dealer!
thx :)
Hi AC, Last year Goatieman from CCF was organising a bulk buy ,( unfortunately i did'nt have any money at the time ) i reckon the RBA were a bit greedy in asking for about 45% premium above face value though.

The only special thing will be the serial number prefix. I've never received a solid number or a radar from the Reserve Bank but I imagine it would be possible as they do not sell solids or radars separately.

Each August the RBA announces the sale of first prefixes, last prefixes and uncirculated notes using an order form available on their site. They won't take any requests for special numbers. The 2011 notes are no longer available from the RBA but can be got from dealers still at a modest retail margin. Interestingly it seems that dealers are able to get first and last prefix notes with the same 3 or 4 numbers in the serial number although I would be interested in hearing more information about that.
The RBA doesn't sell all of the first and last prefixes so they can still be found in circulation as well.
Noticed that the RBA has put out its preliminary announcement about 1st and last prefix sales for this year.
Only $5, $10 and $50 will have the 2012 prefix. The printing numbers are here:

Any thoughts about the numbers?
Here is the email being sent out to interested parties:
For a limited period of time, the Reserve Bank of Australia will be selling first and last prefix banknotes printed in 2012 and standard uncirculated banknotes from the most recent year of print.
Orders will be accepted from 15 July until 23 August 2013.
Requests for specific serial numbers will not be met and banknotes are not guaranteed to be in consecutive order. All orders must be submitted in writing on the original order form and can only be shipped within Australia. Orders received after 23 August 2012 will not be processed.
First and last prefix banknotes will be sold at set prices and standard uncirculated banknotes will be sold at face value. Postage and handling fees will apply to all orders. Full details will be provided on the order form, which will be available on the Reserve Bank's website closer to the commencement of the sale. Please advise us if you are unable to access the order form online and we will arrange for one to be posted to you.
Standard uncirculated banknotes can also be purchased from our Sydney Head Office (65 Martin Place) and Canberra Branch (20-22 London Circuit) at face value as a cash transaction.

Only $5, $10 and $50 will have the 2012 prefix.
:yahoo:
Great news. I'm also happy that they didn't print any $100 notes. It will make the purchase less pricey.
Agreed!!!
When they limit the order with ID registration to $1000, a few $100s and $50s quickly adds up.
Which ones do you think will be be best buys this year? The $50 have a lower last prefix print run, I think (checked the RBA serial number lists on their site - but I sometimes get confused about how to calculate the numbers)
I got a $5 first prefix BA12 828173 in my change at the hotel last year, was most surprised that it had been released into circulation.
Here's a handy PDF of first/last prefixes, formatted to fit on an iPhone:

I'd agree with that.
Thanks guys. I mainly did it for my own use, cos I never ever remember last prefixes. Figured it was worth a share. :)

Bump
Are these last prefix notes worth buying??
Do they go up in value quickly??
I am looking at buying 10K of 50s at $66 a note that's an 32% premium on face value?? looking at history what would these $50 notes be worth in say 2 years??
Would you get $85+ a note in serial number order??
I think it depends just how many last prefix notes are made. If they made 999 999 all the way down to 000 001 probably not but if the last prefix is only 999 999 down to 900 000 or something it might be worth it. The fact that UNC notes are available for sale means there's probably less chance of making a profit too as everyone else has the opportunity to get them if they want.
Or at least it seems that way to me; I don't keenly follow note prices.

I can think of much better uses for ten grand. If you do this, you're going to
start 13.2% down, then lose say 4%-ish a year. So in a couple of years you've evaporated a quarter of your investment. The likelihood you'll be able to find buyers is slim, and the longer you wait, the worse it gets.
OTOH, put that money into either current coinage at face value
(like the coronation $2), or carefully selected higher value items, and you can double your money almost instantly.
Better yet, use it as seed money to start noodling.
Yeah that's what I thought, the first last prefix logic on notes just doesn't make sense, to me it makes no diff if a note was first 2nd 5th or last issue???
Oh, it makes a difference all right. It just takes a lifetime or two though. I keep any I find, but I'm under no delusions that they're worth a premium, certainly not in my lifetime, so I refuse to pay one by buying them at more than face value.
I purchased a few 2005 $5 last pre-fix KC05 & 2008 first & last series when first issued & got lucky, especially with the 2008 ones. Bit of a lottery though.
Landed my first $1 DPS today. Condition isn't exceptional but considering I paid $1 for it, I'd say it was good value.

Can't go wrong at face value. :)
Received my notes from the RBA this morning.
All consecutive running numbers.
Happy enough with the numbers nothing special just first & last prefixes.
nothing like the smell of new plastic notes!
I love the smell of new plastic notes...only way they could smell better was if someone else as paying for them.
I do like the lottery of note buying to see whether you've landed any radars or solids.
:( not as good as paper money..now there's a smell :) and feel :sleepy:

Yeah, I'm always hopfull, but the solids seem to appear in the one location, with a dealer!
I beat the odds with notes I received.
Bought full bundles of first and last fives and tens.
Got a radar five
