Title: 1942 Penny...No Í'
Post by: Basil on May 29, 2015, 10:43:59 AM
Things seem a bit quiet so i thought i might ask for some opinions on this Coin.My brother purchased it and it seems to have some sort of dot before VI which would qualify it to be a genuine No I variety but the weak/filled die strike complicates things.Any Thoughts...?

I was going to say ...... no I dear ..... but I'd better not.
(oops did it).

That's a super weak strike Basil. My Renniks only mentions no I and unfortunately no other indicators. (But in saying that, there's a million and one different bombay varieties, so I shouldn't expect much more I suppose.)

Funny isn't it, the first time I looked I couldn't see the dot .... (not surprising for me) .... but now that I've spotted it, it's quite clear.  (In the last pic, aligned to second denticle gap from the V and about a third of the V down from the top, on the second photo it almost looks like the end of the dark line that goes from the rim through the V).

Basil, from your images I'm inclined to say no it's not a missing "I"
Better contrast images may alter that though.

Thanks for the Pics. & Info Rob.,not really into varieties but now i have a bit more spare time taking more of a  interest.I'll try a get a closer snap of the 'dot' before VI to see what it is for the sake of it.

great photos
I have collected this variety for years and never knew of the small cud before the VI
I went through my photo catalogue - and sure enough - now stands out clear as day!
