Title: Brand new Secondhandy
Post by: trout on May 28, 2015, 09:51:49 PM
I dropped the lost coins of in Fremantle  ( that's a whole different story ) and spotted a 2004 Landrover Discovery for sale for $10,500.
I gave it the once over and got the price down to $9500 in crisp new $50 notes.
My first petrol 4wd and it goes like the clappers :)
I need an automatic because of my dodgy arm anyway.
There are more buttons and gadgets in this thing than a Jumbo jet :laugh2:.
Nice looking car and bloody comfortable :)

Hehehe
It will probebly  take me a week to work out all the gizmo's.
It was one of those "spur of the moment" buys and I have to leave it in Perth and get one of the guys to drive it the 500 k's to Geraldton for me 4 to 5 hrs is a bit much for me to drive at the moment:(
All is good,  it will give me a week to tell Mrs trout I blew nearly 10 grand on a toy

I have a soft spot for Landys. I used to have a Mk 2 Short wheel base hardtop. Had a Holden 179 S4 (factory twin carbs.) motor, upgraded axles and a Fairy overdrive. Fitted radial tyres as soon as they became available in a suitable size -this was around 1980- and that did actually make a big difference to handling..
Mainly used for towing a V8 ski boat; would do that comfortably at around 60mph (about 100km/h) and return 26mpg (that's -grab calculator and punch some buttons- just under 11 litres per 100km). Must admit the roof edge channels did leak in the rain and drip water on your lap when cornering (never did get around to unbolting the roof and replacing the rubber sealing strips).

Anyway, trout, I am sure your Discovery is far superior and will give you years of pleasure.

Mechanics don't like Landrovers. If they see one driving up the road
they quickly close their gates. :)

Hello,

No luck finding the Pics I wanted. I will take more next chance.  http://www.remlr.com/Archive/swb/ann.html Now the Link says it was in Cooma, but a 4x trader Mag said Adaminaby. I was there and saw all the Landy's so maybe there was a group run there. Adaminaby like Jindabyne were towns moved for the Snowy Scheme. They even moved a stone church from what I have read. Very interesting history up that way, not that WA doesn't have its own share !

are you serious?
I was reading the local paper yesterday and the average price in Canberra house was ....

"In April, Canberra home-buyers forked out an average of $530,000 to purchase a home"

I think some media outlets try to make out that Canberra is full of fat cats
Nah - those ones are all up on Capital Hill making our lives a misery and we pay them to do it too

Hello,

Great weather for camping out. Landy's played a part in the Snowy scheme as did Land Cruisers. Theisse who were contractors brought them out and were the Aussie distributors until Toyota became the one organization in I think the late 70's. At least the days are nice when the nights are clear / cold.

Yeah, some great books & heaps of Info. on the Net. about vehicles used in the Snowy. The Land Rovers kept breaking axles and sometimes Diffs.,(many of which ended up as concrete reinforcing),the Poms. sent out an Engineer to try and find out why after Les Thiess told them what he thought of their product, eventually he gave up and was looking at the 4WD Nissans they built for the Indian Army but ended up trialing the Toyota and so started the first major overseas market for Jap. Cars & Trucks.

I used to own one of the first Nissans, I had a G60 Short Wheel Base model .
Built like a brick outhouse and could go anywhere with its thumping big 6cyl petrol engine.

Bloody uncomfortable to drive due to the cramped space between you and that huge steering wheel .
I had this as my main fishing vehicle for a few years until it rusted to death.
Nothing wrong mechanically the body simply rusted apart :cray:

Hello,

The Landy was only a temp. thing to raise money after the war, it used an 80 inch wheelbase, same as the Jeep. GP General Purpose is how it was named. As there was a steel shortage the body of the Landy was Aluminium which had been made for Aircraft industry which was now in abundance. The Pom's also exported farm machinery to do the same. Australia is the home for this stuff, because of the cost to remove it was left in fields when its time was up. In the UK most was scrapped.

I prefer Jap. 4WD's, but let us look at the Rangie. It was decades ahead of its time. Came out in 1967, Coil suspension and all wheel drive V8. Same as all the big names now. Even the styling of the original one is still OK nearly 50 years later. They got it right and left it alone ! Going from 2 door to 4 door was about the only major change in decades.

Does anyone remember the Film " The Gods must be crazy " ? There were many funny scenes based around the Landy. My info is from memory, so if there is an error here please Post an update.

Hello,

What about the winch ! Both Films were good, although the clumsiness was over-done in the second. Yellow Beard was another of the era I liked, although it was considered a flop . It mixed British and American humour, which most didn't get. Here in Aus, we know both though.

I just had a set of Yokohama ATS tyres fitted to the landy, I donated the pretty much brand new road tyres to my daughter for her car and saved her over $1000 :good:
There is nothing wrong with the tyres I took off but I consider road tyres on a 4WD is pretty much the same as wearing ballet shoes to a rugby match
With the new tyres fitted I took the car into the sand hills for the first time and the first thing I noticed is that the car is permanent 4WD .
The only selection available on the transfer box is High , Neutral, Low with a diff lock option in both High and Low.
I didn't even look like getting bogged :yahoo:
I have owned many 4WD cars (we have 3 parked in the yard now) including a lovely little Toyota Surf that I loved to drive but blew the motor in :cray:
The Disco is pretty much a Surf on Steroids with more "Creature Comforts" , I am pretty happy with this vehicle so far :)

Hello,

You have an " all wheel drive " like the first Rangie rather than a 4 WD then ( by definition ). The Center Diff is the difference between the two. This is to avoid axle wind up ( I am sure you know that ) I find it funny watching some young bloke with a welded diff making a tight turn, I wonder what will break first, the axle or diff. An LSD or locker is the solution for them. I had a locker in my Rocky, bit of a pain on sealed roads though.

I can still remember my first car.
It was a second hand  EK Holden station wagon I picked up for $100 at Young's Motor's in Geraldton back in 1971.
It had all the bells and whistles , a heater and a radio were as good as it got back then , I loved it and thought that I was " as flash as a rat with a gold tooth" driving that around :yahoo:
I think I polished most of the paint off that car, for a 17 year old kid back then $100 was an absolute bloody fortune

Well after a lot of swearing and barked knuckles I have finaly managed to fit the light bar to my Disco.
Fitting the bar itself was a bit fiddly and installing the fuse and relay was pretty straight forward.
Getting the control wiring into the cab was a bloody nightmare, there isn't a great deal of room in the dash of a disco but I persevered and got the job done :yahoo:
Now all I have to do is await darkness so I can check it out

Technically, in W.A., lights have to be fitted in pairs, so a light bar does not meet the law.
At work we have just been instructed to sell them in pairs.
I believe they are reviewing this law and cops seem to ignore it anyway.

The new bars have 2 spotties and a floodlight fitted to the same unit.

Yes, national rules for vehicle modifications has been on the agenda for years. Every state and territory agrees that it is desirable and all the others just have to align with them (true).
