Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that we seldom find one of these coins in our change anymore?
10 years ago they were commonplace in my change, not any more.
It must be just your area as we get them all the time and just ignore them.

Well, *I* haven't got them all! Not
yet, anyway. ;)

I haven't seen one in years, that's why I asked the question.
Still popping up in noodles reasonably regularly but the quality has declined with age in circulation so most have gone back into the pond.
Pedro
I got one from a vending machine last week, but you don't see many.
I think they tend to be better condition than other coins that sort of age, as people keep them when they are found in change.
I still see them in the till at work.
I've yet to see a bad circulated 70 Cook 50c they appear a lot in loose change, haven't got one this year though
I completed noodling earlier today and saw around 20 of them out of a total of 2000.
That is about average sightings for me at present.
I think I've only ever got one (maybe two) in change but I've looked through a few lots of $50 of 50c pieces lately and all but one lot I think had a 1970 50c piece.
I am looking through some of my specimen Captain Cooks and came across this little ripper.
My images do not do the colour of the toning on this coin justice.

Yep, you have a beauty there Trout!
Pedro
Not just the 1970 either; 1991 ramshead and 1988 tall ships are appearing much less often than they used to -not that the 1991 was ever a common to find coin anyway.
But the ones that are found are often much better condition than you would expect for their age. I think they are ones people have held on to (so many were near new when put away) and now they are trickling back into the pond.
Many of these are beautifully toned , I think the case is responsible for this :ok:
very pretty
ps ... queenie whispered that she wants to move into my place !!! ha ha
would look very nice with my little lot of specimen captain cooks

I still have 12 to get graded but here are the results from one submission graded today :ok:
SP66x2
SP67x6
SP68x1
I have another 11 in one submission that I think will do better, I really want an SP69 coin
If one of mine come back 69 you can have it  but I doubt it but it's nice to dream sometimes :D

Nah Mate if one of yours comes back a 69 you keep it :ok:
I went through over a hundred of these and picked the best 20 or so to submit.
I also have not seen them be interested in buying them in lots if you keep them for me

A SP69 Captain Cook would be "Top of the Wazza" Currently there are NO SP69 coins graded by PCGS :)
Getting a 68 is tough enough :dash1:
hi esky
I think that SP means specimen - the higher the number the higher the grade
so trout is saying that an SP69 is one of the highest grades to achieve with the PCGS mob
hope that helps

Thanks RG, You explain it Way better than I do :friends::)
I have gone through hundreds of these coins in the Red cases ( a few were NOT SP but swap outs) and picked the best 20 or so to try and get a 69 coin.

Like RG said,SP69 is a Grade The highest Being PR70.
Google "Sheldon Grading System" and you will find out what we are talking about :ok:
I found 2 Captain Cook 50c coins in the till last Sunday.
So they are still out there. :)
I got one from two $10 bags of 50c pieces last week too.

Thanks I get it now :wavemulticolor:
Specimen is the special type of planchet preparation and strike . So it is just below proof then Specimen then gem uncirculated then business. I think the gems parallel with specimen but I don't believe that they are struck more then once, rather they use the brand new dies for the run. Something like that anyways
The numbers are the grade
AU and MS are for business strike coins EXCEPT wedding coin sets as they're MS but should be either SP or PR and yes for those that don't know SP is for specimen and PR is proof and like others have said the higher the number the better the coin with 70 being the top. These are just a few links explain it

Sorry RG , I have to see a coin "In Hand" before I can make any judgment/appraisal of it.
Once you get to 68 and above it is the tiny little things that decide what grade it makes :ok:
Just something simple like a couple of "Milk Spots" will affect a grade.
Looks like a road trip is called for RG! :D
Pedro
yeah
i'd probably think mine are perfect but maybe the boys at pcgs wouldn't think the same !
I usually overestimate my opinions
There are 39 Captain Cooks graded SP and I own 20 of them :dance2::dance::)
Here is one of them
Graded SP68

ooooooo la la Troutski!!!
There's no doubt you play the dark horse well Trout.
An incredible % rate.
Here's one I found while packing.
I have no idea where that came from.

Someone young was doing a short speech on James Cook.
They were very excited when I went and found a 1970 50c to have and use during the speech. Now the whole class will also learn about these coins as well!
kitsch unleased!! Interest - very cool brooch

so how much are these coins worth to sell?
Quoteso how much are these coins worth to sell?
That is a rather good question RG.
I had one of these at MS68 on Numisbid last night and it only achieved $55 It was a specimen coin but only graded MS68 instead of SP68.
Bluesheet has these at
MS68 $200
SP68 $230
With the MS coins the Highest graded is MS69 with a population of three coins at that grade.
The highest grade for the SP coins is SP68 with 14 coins at that grade.
To answer your question, I really don't know But they are rather nice and not that easy to come by so I am not especially happy to let them go under $200 so I will be hanging onto mine for a while :ok:
thanks
I agree that what it sells isn't necessarily what it is worth
I dragged out some coins tonight and took some snaps
these specimens coins are just to die for

They ARE Stunning coins.
The colours go from Silver to Gold to Purple and every other colour in between :yahoo:
And the STRIKE .......WOW :good:
A beautiful coin and pics to match RG!!!
fanks Uni
I get sooo frustrated taking 25 photos for the one coin! ha ha
Hey Trout
I have a purplish one like yours pictured up there ^^^^^
my coin probably isn't as perfect but I love the colours too
I have heaps of these that didn't make the "Cut" but they are worth keeping just for the way you can rotate them in the sun and look at the kaleidoscope of colour :yahoo:
I think these and the wedding set coins are by far the best Decimal coins ever produced by the Mint bar none :ok:
"kaleidoscope of colour" - perfectly stated
that is exactly why I collect the captain cooks and the humble penny
