Have been busy this past week as I collected my brand new Desk Top ASUS Computer as the old one couldn't b e repaired under guarantee so was exchanged.
Next was my HP Laptop computer, same again and I picked the new one up on three separate occasions, yesterday and today. I now have a Acer and the only reason it took three attempts to pick it up, my son and I couldn't get the first two issued laptops to work. I need this one only to edit holidays movies/films that I have taken on the last two voyages and for the up a coming one.
One thing I did buy several years ago was PowerDirector V12 Ultrsa from the USA. Have been trying to find the installation disks etc for ages and no luck. With all the new stuff, I had to set up a new power outlet with surge protection. Moved the book case, you guessed it, found the original V12 Ultra disks. Yeah.
Today also saw the replacement of the Canon Scanner for an Epsom scanner as the new one will take scans of up to 4800 dpi instead of 1200 dpi. I need it so that I can redo scans of my complete coin collection. One coin at a time both Obv and Rev.
The first thing replaced two weeks ago was my printer/scanner/copier all in one super duper thingy that just didn't live up to what it was supposed to do. Now have a Canon super do all things machine.
Now with all this new equipment,( but still the old mis spelling keyboard), I should be able to get things right the first time after a little trial and error.
I must admit though that the Epsom Scanner, V370 will take a bit of time to get used to as it is not as easy as it looks.
One thing I must add here, is if one is going to buy new equipment, computer, tv etc, also purchase the extended warranty that is available to all these things. For me it has paid off tremendously.
Wish me luck folks.
Good luck Goldie!
Having scanned multiple photo albums it does take a bit of time to plough through each scan then file them etc so it will keep you out of mischief for a while.

What OS did they give you Bruce?
I hope they didn't give you that ratty win8
Umm, der, well, yes, Windows 8.
Son wants to wipe it off but I will not let him. It is doing ok at present for me.
Talking of time. I have tio go into hospital for spinal surgery on the 1/6/15 and will be unable to drive a vehicle for three weeks. Hopefully that time will be spent experimenting and re building a data base of my albumed coins.
Hopefully I will be well enough to drive to Sydney to catch a boat for a 72 cruise by the 6/7/15 otherwise, cancel cruise and hit the travel insurance.
Fingers crossed.

The last time my son built a new PC for me, it came with Win8 and he wiped it as in his experience it had too many problems. He has been building PC's since he was about 18 (he's now 44) so I must surrender to his superior knowledge.
Although I use my PC quite a lot, I have absolutely no comprehension of how or why it works, and when he starts trying to explain things to me, I'm sure my eyes go crossed and start to glaze over. :whistle2:
Good luck with yours Goldie. :good:
I too have built all my own PC's since the 90's, I built my last one a couple or so years ago but haven't used it much as I now use a laptop all the time.
I bought a new laptop last year with win8 pre installed and it is totally unreliable (crashes and stalls all the time)
I may drag out the full tower I built and give it a run while I am recuperating.
I have windows 8 and it seems ok for me
I just use the start-up system for general use (i.e. it looks like my old windows 7 on the screen)
I am no computer whiz mind you
good advice about the warranties Goldie -my hubbies' lap top played up merry hell from the get go and all that office works did was take it for weeks for repairs that never worked
I keep telling the hubbub to go through the manufacturer but he didn't take my advice , it is now out of warranty and he replaced the thing altogether
you have to persist with warranties to get a good outcome
I have heard that so many people are unhappy with Windows 8, that Microsoft are going to offer free upgrade to Windows 10.
If you look past the fisher price metro tile interface, Windows 8 is an improvement on 7. You can configure it to boot to desktop. And there are tools that gets you back start menu etc. Otherwise running it on SSD drive is pretty good, especially boot up time (<10s).
The vast majority of people never upgrade their OS. They usually get a new OS when they get a PC. Offering it as a free upgrade doesn't lose them as much revenue as you think.
You get Candy Crush pre-installed now on Windows 10 - dear lord!

Meh. OSX is the only way to go. Failing that, for people with el-cheapo hardware... Linux.
I've been Micro-crap-free for 30 years, and don't regret a moment of it. :P
it's all gobbled gook to me and as long as it works when I turn it on it's all good and if not it's panic stations and :dash1: as I wouldn't have a clue about them :(
My wife bought me a book yesterday called Computers For Seniors for DUMMIES. What she doesn't know about them is not worth knowing, heh, and I haven't read the book. Do I really need to?.....nah

We use Linux on our file server and all our web servers. For day to day use we still use Windows.
Can't wait for Fulvio to show up here and tell us how we should be doing it.
Blast the new electronic stuff.
Now my desk top will not allow me to access my emails.
Asking for a password for Outlook.pst?
Me no savvy and then it tells me to contact my server. My server is in the shower at present so me no savvy.
My son will come over and rescue me later I hope.
The other thing is all the time now I am getting unwanted ads popping up at the bottom right of the screen. Anyone know how to stop these blasted things and NO, I will not exchange/change/ for a MAC.
Regardless of which operating system you use I am a big fan of being one generation behind the latest -let others experience the teething pains of the newest and "best".
I bought a new computer and relegated my old one to backup (networked so both could be online together). Then I upgraded the motherboard on the old one with a recently superceded one (very cheap that way) and added some more RAM. It went so well I thought I should not have bothered buying the new one!
New one came without operating system and I purchased Windows 7 Pro plus Office Pro 2010 at academic price (again cheap). [Lucky to have an academic in the family who uses Macs so she is not interested in Microsoft offers. Is that cheer in the distance Fulvio?]
When Microsoft stopped supporting XP I bought a Windows 7 OEM key from a dealer (you guessed it, cheap) and upgraded it to Windows 7.
I personally was happier with windows XP than I am with 7.
And, I would probably not buy MS Office ever again -go with Open Office (it's free).
Now, don't start thinking I am a cheapskate -just believe it. :good:
Ok, but you must be either a Jew or a Scotsman or a bit o both are ye not?
After many years of using Windows computers (OS) I have done a leap of faith and bought an Apple Macbook yesterday. Man what a diffrence is the way it perform ! I am usually an Android user in terms of phones/tablets. However the amount of seamless integration capabilities Apple OS brings is amazing. From H/W perspective, it is beautifully crafted...
I am not sure if I ever go back to using a Windows OS computer again ! Unless Microsoft can do the same with its OS...

Welcome to the fold. :)
Trust me, you'll never go back. Not that OSX doesn't have its foibles... there's plenty I don't like, especially in the newest versions. But its like driving a Rolls vs a Lada. Both will get you there, usually. Both will break down, sometimes. One is just far higher quality than the other.
Ever notice that whenever you see computers on TV (not paid placements, just interviewees in their homes or offices), they're almost always Macs? And the further up the socioeconomic scale you go, the more likely that is? Now why would that be? Could it be that the more value people place on their time, the less inclined they are to waste it messing about with crappy products?
Happy now, Mark? :diablo:

It could be because people higher up the socio economic scale are more concerned about how they are perceived regardless of the actual quality of the product.

its also because they want turn key solutions to problems. I know a few of these top of the economic scale type people quite well and they have no idea as to how computers work. but they do have faith that Apple will tell them what to do and have no problem paying for it. its only money after all.
funny thing is we are not talking people incapable of working it out, most are lawyers, CEOs, doctors, engineers, architects etc. they simply choose not to learn how to make it work

That is a very good point actually.
I remember sitting on the couch at a mate's place once while he tried to get his PC working. He's a tech guy, who builds and sells computers, phone systems, networks and other high tech wizardry. So not a noob or ignorant about computers.
It took him four and a half hours, including multiple reinstalls of XP, tearing every card out, and adding them back in one at a time to eventually find an IRQ conflict.
I admit I was kinda smug when I asked him how much he charges for his time, and whether these types of wastes of it were really worth the 'savings' of not buying a Mac. This was not an isolated incident, nor were the continual 'upgrades' that led to a cupboard full of old motherboards, cards and assorted other bits and pieces. Yet he persisted in claiming Macs were overpriced.
Oddly enough, everything changed when his daughter moved back home, bringing her Mac with her, forcing him to learn about them. Its now a multi-platform household, and he's finally stopped rubbishing Apple. I do miss our arguments though...
Someone once said "I don't need a PC. I have an english motorcycle to waste all my time and money on. That's why I bought a Mac." ;)
all good points fulvio, but if you wish to tinker with the computer then macs are useless. there are less opportunities to upgrade, repair or circumnavigate systems to make things happen that original developers didn't think of.
basically if you want a computer to tell you what it can do, get a mac. if you want a computer that you make do what you want buy a pc

I beg to differ mate, unless you are talking about playing around with the OS/messing with the H/W.
If you are a developer , you will always ask for a Mac for development and they don't touch windows machines ... Linux is not a bad OS for developers either ...
gaming, online black hatting other stuff I wont mention on a public forum

"Damage"??
You do realise that the basic hardware is pretty much exactly the same, right? Other than the custom firmware that makes a Mac a Mac, its all bog standard components, in a much better engineered package.
And I would argue that there's not much you can't do with a Mac Pro. Sure, there may be the odd card that the designers couldn't be bothered writing OSX drivers for, or obscure bits and pieces that break all the rules and won't even work with every version of Windows, but by and large, you can't get more plug and play than a Mac. Everything just works without the need to sacrifice chickens or read tea leaves.
Anyway, in this day and age, a $35 Raspberry Pi is the go for those few who want to fiddle about. Old-school computers are for the majority of people who just want to get things done.
Well, I hope Mac's aren't too much more expensive, my Daughter wants one for her birthday next month.
Any recommendation on what laptop I should buy her? She will mainly use if at Uni.

Hehe. I have my old and crappy Nokia, and that will do until it breaks. Then I'll get something similar, or go back to one of the 3310/3315/3330's I have lying about.
I feel absolutely zero need to have an iPhone or one of those CrapDroid things. I have an iPod Touch which does everything an iPhone would, except make phone calls and eat me out of house and home in network fees. $60 a year for the Nokia and zero for WiFi suits me just fine.

Trig: It would depend entirely on what she wants to do with it. My personal preference leans towards a 15" MBP, but they're heavy. An Air weighs nothing, but is somewhat limited as a result. which is fine if you have something else to network it to, not so fine if its standalone.
Check out the used/refurb options. And look at something like a Mac Mini to go with the laptop. Hang it off your TV in the loungeroom, and you can even use it to watch movies as well as act as a file server or when she needs more grunt.

May be Mark... I don't work with mainframe developers alike.. mostly with guys work on API, integration, cloud solutions... Apigee, WM, Java, .net etc etc... Each to their own.. I was not a Apple fan until yesterday.. however after being a Windows user for close to 18 years, I like what I see with Mac.

Get your daughter to play with a Mac and see what she thinks about it. Apple has a discount scheme for UNI kids... Other option is to wait for a sale and get one from JB or similar..$1000 or slightly under you can get a Macbook air 11 ... All depends on what she studies as well... If it is a business degree , you don't need a pro... Pros are expensive...
All one can buy is one that is RIGHT for you, is affordable and be easily operated.
if it breaks down , as they all do, can it be repaired?
it is all up to individual choices.

Thanks for the replies. She has been using Mac since she has been at UWA, as that's all they have in the library there. She is a big fan of them now and she also has an iphone and ipad, I think she like the idea of them all being linked through icloud (I think that's what they call it).

Yeeeeahhhh... ummm... not so sure about this one.
I use icloud as my main email address now, because it doesn't have the limitations of other services. It doesn't give you piddly limits like ISP accounts, is portable, and doesn't fail bigtime like all the Microsoft services
(Hotmail, Live, MSN, etc) do. And it doesn't spy on you and inject ads like Google. Well, not yet anyway.
And obviously I use a lot of the other icloud features as well.
But I've turned off syncing, and most automated uploads. Frankly, I have better uses for my bandwidth, piddly as our aussie caps are. And then there is Apple's penchant for having everything in one place. Sorry, but that just doesn't work in real life. I don't want my coin collecting stuff mixed in with my various clubs and associations, my family pics or my porn collection
(yeah, I'm kidding about the last one, but you get the idea). :diablo:
People have been caught out by stuff being beamed back to home base that was inappropriate. Imagine some mate borrows your phone and takes a dikpik as a joke, and it pops up on the screen at home while your daughter is doing her homework. Not funny.
Actually, this whole thing is running parallel to discussions I'm having in the Dogecoin community about wallets, and my belief that people should be in total control of their own resources. Way too many people put blind trust in some machine or bit of software without actually understanding what its doing under the hood, and this almost always leads to eventual disaster. Its a bit like blindly buying 'brand X' pages for your coins, and not knowing or understanding what they're made of.
Yeah, it's all over my head. Give me an old fashioned phone and a basic laptop and I'm happy as a pig in poo. :)

Actually, Silica Gel may work even better, methinks.
My last years model laptop decided that it wasn't going to play and all I could get was a blank screen and nothing else.:dash1::cray:
I almost just junked the laptop But then I remembered about creating a Boot disk :):yahoo:
It took a while (all bloody night) but I have got the machine back up and running again.
I have NO idea why it decided to "Spit the Dummy" and it is a nice Toshiba Satellite AMD unit that hasn't given me any grief before.
I managed to re install win 10 and saved ALL my folders with thousands of my coin images in them thank goodness.
Now all I have to do is reinstall office and a few other programmes and I should be Good to Go again.
Thankfully I have this spare Acer core i7 unit I bought earlier this year for work So I was able to create the Boot disk to recover the other laptop.
Jeeze I really Miss not getting the operating system on disk like in the past :(
Well saved.
I had a similar problem with my Acer showing nothing but a black screen.
I Googled the problem, connected a remote screen to the laptop, adjusted
a few settings and the screen came back. I wonder how many people just
chuck away good machines.
Quote from: 'Triggersmob' pid='102810' dateline='1481838487'I wonder how many people just chuck away good machines.
They're not 'good' machines even when they're going. They're CHEAP machines, which is why people buy them.
So I would say none.
Save the environment. Buy a Mac. :P
I tried hooking up an external monitor but that didn't work :(
So I just changed the boot order so that the boot disk would kick in and went from there :yahoo:
I recently had Windows 10 fail on my spare computer. Only way I could boot it up was with a bootable USB stick. When I booted it with Ubuntu I was able to access everything, recover all my data and eliminate Windows system files.
I took notice of the options I had when booting with Ubuntu; there was try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu. If you have to boot with a different operating system to try and repair a faulty operating system then the logical conclusion is to forget the first and go with the second.
Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='102823' dateline='1481842658'forget the first and go with the second.
