G'day all,
Didn't know where else to put this but just wanted to share my latest purchase.
Been looking for a while and this one is in great condition.
Nice one proof27, it's in pretty good nick for it's age :good:
Cool!
How's about a scan of the back of the bag as well as the coin please.
I'm too timid to buy one of those bags as there are alot of fake ones out there (to go with the Chinese florins). How do collectors identify the real bags?
Very nice.
Perth bags are more rare and this is a fake. I'm no expert on these bags, but when they were sold with the coin, the envelope was folded over causing some wear of the words starting at the word Council. Fakes don't usually have this wear. Also wrong envelopes are used with fakes, I think if you research and look at a lot of bags you can really tell the difference. Some of them have the wrong style of flap. Plus I wouldn't buy one of these of feebay.
gee there's a bit of a differance in the text
I think a fake is obvious to recognise, but I could be wrong.
[attachment=3230]Back of bag Gold..
Looks like certain crease marks across the back.
Pit though. Mine has a tear on the flap and has been thinned to one side.
I have both the Multi City and the Perth Bag.
I shall have to get mine out and show you.
For sure, like to really see the Perth bag.
good grief Goldie
what don't you have!!!
Waiting in anticipation to see the Perth bag.

I have a feeling there was a Coin and Banknote magazine article about it a few years ago, or an article somewhere anyway.
I would like to get me hands on that.
[attachment=3232] here's my perth ,sorry about photo lol
The fake bag's were easy to pick ,what i remember , they were made out of modern day smooth paper , not a pulp looking paper , if that make sense lol, and the colour was wrong .
:scratch_one-s_head: gee that looks very much like the one I thought I left down there..I wish :mocking:
I may be missing something here but it seems like a bad case of "packyboxitis" to me.
This may be an important numismatic item to some and collectable but for me it is simply the packaging the coin came in and people are paying ridicules prices for a grubby old paper bag Sans coin
Very nice Belly, very jealous.
:laugh2: your no  that's my spot :D
yeah it's only a little bag but they buy all sorts of packaging these days, even seen a wedding set box amongst other things on ebay :)
Dere ya go as requested:

There was a spate of fakes a few years ago now that prompted this - Fake Foy article (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2011/08/fake-foy-bags.html)
I love the story behind the bag, the Mark Foy story, their history and how it was issued.
How has the writing come through to the back?

It's the printing off another bag?? -so technically it's 1 1/2 bags -does that make the grade better??
I have the bag but not the coin, noticed you have a MS65, do you ever see a higher grade around PPH?

In printing terms it's called set off, where the ink has not dried, thus setting off against next item.
As they were all done by Letterpress & not Lithographic the chance to have set off is greatly increased.
The first lot of blue 1993 Ten dollar notes had the same issue because of the amount of ink used to print the blue number 10.
I was just reading about the $10 note today, never knew that.
oh
I thought that bag may have been a obverse brokage ha ha

Not only did they change the BLUE to GREY but they changed the screen so it would carry less ink, no more set off!

I have an MS65 myself and The Purple Penny has one listed (http://www.thepurplepenny.com/1526,australia-1934-35-melbourne-centenary-florin-2s-gem-uncirculated-pcgs-ms65.html) and has sold a number over the years.
Eric has a couple of 66's on his site. Drake Sterling (http://www.drakesterling.com/coins-for-sale/products/1934-35-melbourne-centenary-florin)
IAG have a MS65 34/35 Florin with Foy bag in there upcoming auction, bag looks in good condition, bids at $980.

Yeah 65s have been trending down lately with 66s trending up so pending which grade you are looking at you can put off buying a 65 for a while or buy a 66 ASAP.
Huge jump in price from 65 to 66.
just slightly!!!
maccas Choice Unc value is $1,500 GEM $2,850
Drake Sterling is asking $4250 for a 66 with full wreath
66 Partial wreath $3950
Maccas and PCGS ask prices are often worlds apart

Correctly speaking that batch of fakes were made from modern looking paper, nothing to stop another* from having a go at perfecting the fakes. Unlike fake coins there isn't even the risk of conviction for counterfeiting currency.
* with 1.3 billion Chinamen I'm sure there must be a few who have the skills to make fake paper (they invented paper in the first place)
What did they use for 'toilet paper' before paper was invented?
"Gum Leaves". :shok:
