I think it is more the size of the commitment rather than the size of the bank balance that counts when collecting the more expensive coins.
Many dealers offer a lay by option that is a great help acquiring high calibre coins.
I have used this option on many an occasion, that and the tax return of course
I don't disagree at all
and some proofs don't cost as much as the same grade in the business strike
I guess for me personally, I have always seen the proof coin collecting as a tad more 'up market' when compared to my old penny collection
and I have probably spent more overall on my daggy coins rather than putting together a few of the date sets of proofs
yes it depends on the commitment to the collecting cause
Cool, will do thanks Steve :good:
Yes they're dear but they are really nice and not overly expensive if you get the lower grades so lucky for layby or I wouldn't have any of them :)
I see some 1960s Penny proofs are ~$100 in PR63. That's not very expensive.
Yeah low grades are cheap enough but it very quickly jumps up with every grade they go up. But you don't want to go too low a grade or you can really tell so I try and stick around the PR64/5 in coppers as they can have a few little marks but still a nice coin but jump up to the 66 and higher are beautiful but well out of my price range.
Those are nice! I really like pre-decimal Australian coins. I haven't seen proof versions yet, though so thanks for sharing!
They're really nice coins so keep an eye out for them Matt, these sets could do with up grades but this is my 56 set

and my 58 set

ooooohhhh
very flash looking sets AJ
Just take you time and add to you collection over time. If you don't rush it you can put sets together cheap. I put my pr65 1960 Melbourne silver set together for $265 (thanks Walter :) )
Thanks RG, they sure are nice coins and one day I hope to up grade but I'm happy with what I have so far :)
Yes serial slow and steady wins the race :good:
