Title: 1980 Proof 5 cents
Post by: trout on April 21, 2015, 09:35:30 AM
I bought a bunch of 1980 Proof sets and noticed the 5 cent coin in all but one of 5 sets looks pretty ordinary.
Not sure if they had a bad run of planchets for the 5 cent coin or they didn't prepare them properly but all the other coins in the sets are just fine.
The 5 cent coin almost looks like it is minted in silver and has tarnished as such.
The same thing can be seen in the 1966 sets where the 50 cent coin is a different colour.

Has anyone else noticed this in their sets?

I think proofs are lacquered.
I wonder if it is the coating?

does it have reeding
I don't know what would cause the colour to be so different, the frosting looks the same, maybe a different metal mix in the batch, or a minting processes skipped

I think they must have missed a step in the process with the blanks, I doubt very much that the metal composition is different.

@ Oz

Nope.

I'm not convinced it was born that way actually.. its been 35 years.. was the case intact? Cos it sure looks environmental from those pics. Plus, it's a manual process, and I can't see them putting it in the case like that.

4 out of 5 sets looks to me like a mint "Stuff Up" with the blanks and the prep

I have very few proof sets, but one is a 1980. I will have to check mine.
