Title: Tuvalu Coins
Post by: Oldcoinchest on March 11, 2015, 10:33:01 PM
Just finished researching Tuvalu coins and have crunched some numbers to come up with what I think is interesting info at this current point in time.

There are 324 different legal tender coins,
230 silver, 49 gold, 44 base metal and 1 platinum
There are 51 coin sets,
33 silver, 9 gold and 9 base metal
2010 was the saw the most coins come out with 46 coins (7 sets)
41 silver, 4 gold and 1 base metal

Maybe not that interesting but some figures that I didn't know.

I have always avoided Tuvalu coins like the plague.  The Cook Islands as well.  There are enough Australian coins to waste your money on.

According to my spreadsheet, I have 1 each of 1c-20c, 5 coins all dated 1985.

I bought a Labrador Retriever 1oz Silver Proof Coin (http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalogue/labrador-retriever-1oz-silver-proof-coin.aspx) as a birthday present for my wife -she adores labradors.
Otherwise, although I have some Tuvalu, Cook Islands (including the "naughty" dollar), Kirabati etc. coins, I only keep normal circulation coins and have avoided the Perth Mint issues like the plague.

The 2013 forever love. You must have a good filling system for your pictures. There is also 2012/14 , there was a similar in 2011 with 2 doves and ribbons but im not sure if it is a forever love coin?

I like how you say well my spreedsheet says I have them. you must have too many coins if there is such a thing.
They only minted 4 years of those coins 1976 - 81 - 85 & 94, Apart from that its the aussie dollar and notes they use.

Oh well, if that's the case I might as well go all out to get the rest.  Can't be too many more before I have a full set of their circulation coins. How many circulation 50c did they have?

I do indeed have too many coins, and they are nearly smothering me. :whistle2:

Surely there can be only one "must have" Tuvalu coin ....

Pride of place in my "Mythical collection" ........

So we know Perth Mint must have sold one of these -not "granny bait" but "uni bait".

:laugh2: ..... I was awaiting your prompt response Jeff ...... (I'm hanging out for your noodling pics).

Yes, it's a part of my "Mythical Collection" ..... along side my Decimated and Pre-Decimateds ..... now had this been 2001 / 2002 when the Unicorn collection (of any description) flourished ..... it would have been one of 1000+ other unicorns.

Unfortunately it lives only as a figment of my imagination, memory and of course my avatar, but I see there's one of ebay if you happen to need one ....... NOT.

Just those 4 different years for the 50c (76/81/85/94), makes it easy to get the full set

Nice choices. New Zealand doesn't have any commemorative coins yet (first one due for release soon), but Canada has some real nice coins.

Canada doesn't make it easy to get their circulating commemoratives. In the last few years they have been issuing circulating commemoratives that are available in Canada only.  They're not available from the Royal Canadian Mint until they package them in one of their sets, if ever.  You have to go through a Canadian dealer to get them in any quantity.  Some other issues are available to Canada and US only, and similarly, you have to go through a dealer or have a Canadian contact to obtain them otherwise.

Were all the 50c and $1 from 1994 onwards that can be seen here http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/Newzealand_all.php made for circulation?

Thanks for the link Nancy. Some nice coins there.
I was under the impression that New Zealand was releasing it's first commemorative coin this month, so I don't think those coins are for circulation.

Info re The NZ Mint here: http://www.nzmint.com/about

I think they've been churning out Grannie Bait for a looong time. The first 1½ lines says it all really.

If you are ever planning a trip to Tuvalu don't bother ordering currency. Australian currency is legal tender there.
Also, don't depend on using credit/debit cards -you will be disappointed to find out businesses don't have the facility and ATMs don't exist (unless things have changed recently).
From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuvaluan_dollar) "The dollar is the currency of Tuvalu. From 1966 to 1976, Tuvalu officially used the Australian dollar. In 1976, Tuvalu began issuing its own coins for circulation, although these circulate alongside Australian coins and Tuvalu continues to use Australian banknotes. Similar to the Faroese króna's relationship to the Danish krone, the Tuvaluan dollar is not an independent currency, but a variation of the Australian Dollar.
There is no central monetary institution or central bank in Tuvalu. The National Bank of Tuvalu {very restricted opening hours  but they may provide cash on cards for a very high fee, poor exchange rate and restrictive daily limit }performs some monetary functions for the government of Tuvalu including the holding of government accounts and foreign assets.
Other currencies used in Tuvalu have been the Pound Sterling, prior to the introduction of the Australian dollar, as well as the US dollar, during the World War II American occupation of the islands. Gilbert and Ellice Islands banknotes have also been used on in Tuvalu, These notes were cashier's cheques backed in Pounds rather than an official, independent currency."

Similar story in Kirabati and New Zealand dollars can be used in Nauru, Pitcairn Island, Niue, the Ross Dependency, and Tokelau.

Hobbit coins are legal tender in new Zealand but I don't recommend you spend them in shops.

this is Funafuti, the main island of tuvalu

jeffh : you are correct , thats how it was back in 2005 when i had over 2 weeks here. mind you there was nothing really to spend money on. we were aware that cash was the only way. those days to have over $1500 cash on you was stressful, not so now

my old boss, a licensed builder and TAFE teacher, got a contract through OZAID to lecture on quantity and estimating for building construction. so i tagged along to assist in class.
one of the better things i have done. the people were great and to understand their problems of politics(internal and external), population stress on infrastructure /or lack of, jobs, drinking water, food supply, threat of rising sea levels or sinking atoll etc
