Title: Unlikely Heroes Great and Small -A dollar or not a dollar?
Post by: purplepennyhunter on March 05, 2015, 12:19:55 PM
I think the Mint must have made a boo-boo here as there is no denomination on these coins.

Feline $1 (https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2015-1-Feline-Mascot-HMAS-Encounter/310649.aspx)

Donkey $1 (https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2015-1-Murphy-the-Donkey-Coin/310634.aspx)

I'm guessing though they should have the obverse with the denomination like the lunar coins have. And I'm excited I don't have to buy this because I no longer collector dollars!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow now that's a bloody beauty PP, suppose they just expect people to know :scratch_one-s_head: Be fun if they start that crap with circulated coins, does it have an end or is the mint stupidity getting worse by the day :dash1:

I am SOOO glad they brought out that ABC garbage :yahoo:
Why would they bother putting a denomination on this junk , RAM stopped making REAL dollar coins a while back anyway

No trout; they still make a few real dollars -queen obverse and roos reverse.
After all people still want money for transactions.

MAYBE,
Remember the 2014 MOR rolls that were first issued to the Mints "Pet Dealers" before they were released to the public many months later so that the dealers could "Cash In" on them.
Looked pretty much like a PR stunt by RAM to keep the Dealers happy and NOTHING to do with supplying coinage for commerce

Just added a post to the "shaping your collections" RAM website regarding these.
Interested to see what their excuses are for this Stuff Up

No way. I do rather like dollars to have the denomination on the reverse like the MOR. The lunar series never sit well with me. Then the alphabet...... The holey dollar and dump didn't either. I just don't think it's a real dollar without it on the rev. Too much like grannybait.

But... but... putting the denomination on the reverse would totally ruin the artwork! They wouldn't have been able to show anywhere near as much of that extraordinarily relevant barometric scale if they'd been forced to waste space to make it look like a coin!

{In case you couldn't tell from the strategic use of italics, yes, that was me trying to be sarcastic.}

In case anyone is interested, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Encounter_%281902%29) has a copy of the cat-in-the-gun picture the coin design is based on. But I'm still all ??? about what a barometric scale has to do with this cat, or this ship.

QuoteCreatures great and small who contributed their strength, energy and lives to the Australian Imperial Forces and the Australian Defence Force helped to define the spirit of our great nation.

So what did the cats do on HMAS Encounter? Deliver messages?

Good point Sap, now this is all just speculation from a madman and who knows what the RAM is thinking at any time but I suppose they were trying to associate it with the navy some how and they would have had a few choices of instruments that they could of used, a sextant, compass, barometer, mariner's astrolabe, binnacle or other parts of the helm being some of the main ones and maybe went with the barometer as a sextant would have ruined their design as the arms would have been straight through the middle of the pussy and I think they might have used a sextant and compasses on a few other coins already so the next choice would probably be a barometer being round but they should have put the weather reading on it where they say fine, stormy, etc. That's about the only thing my pea brain can come up with sorry and probably well off the mark

There is nothing really special about this particular cat, most Ships used to have a "Ships Cat".
This is from "Wikipedia"

The ship's cat has been a common feature on many trading, exploration, and naval ships, and dates back to ancient times. Cats have been carried on ships for many reasons, the most important being to catch mice and rats. These rodents aboard a ship can cause damage to ropes, woodwork and after the introduction of steam, electrical wiring. Also, rodents threatened the stores the ship carried. Rodents may devour the foodstuff carried to feed the crew, and could cause economic damage if the ship was carrying grain or similar substances as part of its cargo. Rats and mice were also sources of disease, which is dangerous for ships that are at sea for long periods of time. For example, rats are carriers of plague and it is believed rats on ships were one of the main spreaders of the Black Death.

Cats naturally attack and kill these rodents.[1] The natural ability of cats to adapt to new surroundings made them suitable for service on a ship. They also offered companionship and a sense of home, security and camaraderie to sailors who could be away from home for long periods, especially in times of war.

This coin is just another in a long line of coins the RAM is producing using the Anzac theme.
It is only a matter of time before we see coins commemorating all the different battles
/Campaigns  the generals and all the individual VC winners on the 25mm coin.
It is a Great thing that we remember what our forefathers did to protect and build Australia, It is  Sad thing when that history is Exploited for monetary gain as RAM is doing at the moment :dash1:

The denomination for the Horse and Cat coins is on the Obverse, directly below the effigy of QE11.   It reads ONE DOLLAR.
