Title: A little help?
Post by: Goose on March 02, 2015, 12:44:18 PM
I drove 290 Km round trip to a coin show today (Sun). Nothing really interested me except two coins. On was a silver 1 oz 2011 Australian $1 Koala coin (Pd $22 U S) and the other a silver 1/2 oz 2013 Fiji $1 Taku Turtle coin (Pd $11.50 U S). I purchased the Fiji coin due to Steve's lackadaisical thoughts on not going to any coin shops when he was in Fiji a little over a week ago.

I got home and noticed that the Fiji coin seems to have a rotated reverse (The Turtle side). Looking a the obverse, I turn the coin horizontally on its axis, and the reverse seems to be 45 degrees rotated counterclockwise (down to the left). Is this normal for this coin?

I hear ya Goose as I have to drive for ages but it's good to get out and about but I'd say no it's not normal to have it rotated but some pic's would be nice when you get time mate :)

I don't know how to post pics, but a daughter said she will show me this coming Tuesday or Thursday when she has some time. BUT......if I post some, all you'll see is a pic of the obverse and a pic of the reverse. Wait, it just came to me! I'll try to take a pic with the coin above a mirror and take the pic on a slight angle to see both sides.....at the least, I'll try.

Cy, you talking about me? I went to New Zealand not Fiji. I think old timers disease is senting in.

The "right way up" for this coin can, presumably, be seen on the New Zealand Mint sales page (http://www.nzmint.com/bullion/shop-online/12oz-silver-taku), with the fineness fine print directly at the bottom and "FIJI TAKU" at about 10 o'clock. If this is what you're seeing too, then yes, that's apparently "normal".

45° is never normal. either 0 or 180 depending on whether they use coin or medal alignment.

However, this particular coin's reverse may be non-obvious:

Take a picture of the reverse alongside the (similarly aligned) obverse of any other coin you have. We'll know what you did and will be able to see what you are talking about.
