Wow, what a find.!! Imagine the feeling- do I keep just a couple.!!
I've been to Caesarea twice in the last 6 years. The gold coins were found in 40 feet of water. About 3 yrs ago, they found passage ways under the city that they never knew about. It's a very interesting city.....and OLD.
when i go diving am always on the lookout for coins , bottles, old stuff from wrecks besides the coral fish etc and.. sharks :D
no doubt too late for caesarea :(

This is Israel we're talking about. As is the case in the rest of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries, "finders keepers" does not apply. Lost and buried coin hoards belong to the State, with stiff penalties for finding coins and not reporting them.
Unlike most of the rest of the Mediterranean and Middle East, however, Israel has a fairly generous reward programme for handing in coin finds. And if the archaeologists eventually decide they don't need to keep the entire hoard in a museum, the finders might even be allowed to buy a couple of the coins for themselves when they come up for sale.
