Just letting you all know, that my Wife and I will be on a cruise for the next 2 weeks.
I hope to be back in ACF on 28th Feb.
I will shut the gate on the way out. (Please don't lock it behind me) :)
We will be sailing around part of NZ and then back to Aus.
You can follow our travels on the Diamond Princess' bridgecam if you like.

See you in a couple of weeks and be good while I'm gone. :)
Have a great time Steve!
sounds awesome!
Have a good time and trust the sea is smooth and the weather kind.
Go and enjoy.
+1 from me as well.Enjoy it,i'm back on Monday from a break but Ships do have Internet if you get Forum withdrawal pains.
I also hope you have a great time.
Enjoy and stay safe.!!
Good on you Steve.
Have a great time, Remember NO picks it didn't happen :laugh2:

I know, but I try to avoid it and it's expensive.
I have ordered my NZ money from the post office, hoping to get a few different denominations, but all I got was $50 notes. So at least I've added that to my collection. Just have to work on all the rest now and coins of course. I see NZ is introducing new brighter notes this year.
Here's the note I added to my collection...

I hope you get them soon, They shouldn't be far away.
Would be nice to see them on their way to the next recipient when I come back. :)
Bon voyage.
Don't worry about the internet whilst cruising. It trends to be expensive and I have seen people browsing the web, eyes glued intently on the screen, completely ignoring the beautiful tropical islands cruising past outside. The whole point of the exercise is the experience and getting away from your everyday activities.
You won't be able to help but enjoy it.
Have a great cruise. I think I'll be coming down there again in a year (Jan or Feb) to visit you again....I'm working on it.
Have a great time Steve and don't worry about the forum while you're away, we'll all still be here when you come home. Bon Voyage! :friends:

Will do Kel.
Good news that the coins have arrived.
Hope you enjoy your cruise.
Only cruise that I have been on was years ago, one day Sea Escape cruise from Fort Lauderale to the Bahamas and back.
As promised, here are some pics from our cruise.
Day 1, Diamond Princess arrives at Auckland. This pic is taken from our hotel room, so we didn't have far to walk.

Our mini-suite Stateroom.

Day 2, sailed to Tauranga and took a day trip to visit the hot springs and mud pools near Rotorua.

Day 3, sailed overnight to Akoroa. Took a bus and train tour of the New Zealand Alps.

Day 8, after 2 days at sea, crossing "The Ditch", we arrived at Hobart.
This pic is about the only time we saw the Sun that day. Mostly is was overcast, but did rain on us when we were at Port Arthur.

Day 12, one more day at sea and we arrive at our final destination, Sydney. We arrived at 6.00am in the morning, but our plane did not leave till 5.30pm. We took a tour of Sydney to kill some time, but I had packed my camera away. So I leave you with a pic of some of the food we had available and helped me put on over 4kg in that short time.
We had a wonderful time. I also found a 2005 $2 coin which I didn't have already and managed to find some decent banknotes, so I added a $5, $10 and $20 note to my collection. Now it's back on the diet. :(
I had lined up some protection for all the coins and notes I would find, but didn't need him in the long run.

Here is the Diamond Princess I photographed yesterday here in Melbourne:
I also noticed that she has changed Registration Ports from "Hamilton" to "London".
What on Earth is that on the superstructure on the stern , Looks like a bloody Jet engine?
I was just thinking the same thing trout, afterburner :)
Give it everything she's got and hold on tight :laugh2:
do you get sea sick Steve?
or are those ships so big that you don't feel as if you are on a boat?
Quote from: 'robbiegal' pid='67944' dateline='1425287302'do you get sea sick Steve?

I do get sea sick on smaller vessels, but I have not felt sea sick while cruising on larger ships.
If the waves get big though, than can still move around. They have stabilisers that can lessen the roll
(side to side rocking), but does not help with the pitch (forward and backward rocking).
Quote from: 'trout' pid='67936' dateline='1425281904'What on Earth is that on the superstructure on the stern , Looks like a bloody Jet engine?
I wondered about those as well, but never did find out what they were.
Certainly didn't need jet engines, most of the time we only did about 13 knots.

Must be cheaper to register in London this year. :)
Our cabin, er, I mean Stateroom, was on the side you photographed, just above the lifeboats and midship.
thanks steve
I used to get violently sea sick but have only ever been out on smaller boats but out into international waters so there were times when she'd be a tad rough
never stopped me from going out but it wasn't pleasant being so sick
I read through the cruises last night and with me not being a flyer it just might be the way for me to get overseas in more ways than one!! I have always wanted to go to hong kong
Those things either side of the Stack, (chimney for those non seaman types), are in fact jet engines. They are there to provide extra power, electricity, when required for berthing and anchoring times. I understand that they are gas turbines.

That would be really nice. My wife is looking at maybe doing Asia next time. You should be able to find lots of foreign coins for my, er I mean your collection LOL.
That one isn't available now until next year . I'd love to see Japan. My father was there in the first of the occupational forces so I grew up with his war photo albums. It would be nice to see the rebuilt country. Well see . Lot of $$ but I have now reached the stage in my life where I am going to spend it on me while I am still tickin' ha ha
Do you still have the album RG, and why the hell not 'cause ya can't take it with ya :)
? album?
got dozens!! mostly full of junk!!
the coin hobby has always just been something that the hubby and I for our own pleasure - we enjoy going to auctions together and finding varieties and so on
but I guess I am a bit over having to have this coin, that coin and am directing my interests into other things lately
I will always love my 1964 pennies but there isn't a big market for those little fellas!! ha ha

A couple of years ago I worked in a recycling plant. Pained me to see old photo albums, historic books and war memorabilia on the line ready to be pulped etc.
I kept an album (pinched it off the line) that had photos of WW1 troops, another album postcards of Cairo from that era and other bits and pieces (even a 38mm brass case from an anti tank round of the Western Front).
Could have kept a WW2 Italian hand gun or a 6" brass shell case (with the date 1944) if I had been daring. Probably all thrown out of nursing homes or deceased estates (along with lots of jewellry that I kept because morons couldn't recognize silver, platinum or Jewish hallmarks and had thrown out with the costume junk).
Gee that's sad but yes it's amazing what people will throw out Neal, even the brass shell would be worth a few bucks in scrap let alone the historical value. Makes me wonder how a lot of this stuff gets off base as we were told that if we even took a spent round from the rifle rang and got caught it's a chargeable offence but then when you see what has been smuggled back into oz and off base you'd be amazed, weapons, drugs and even a monkey and who know what else, what the hell they thought they would do with a monkey has me beat but anyway.
good call Neal saving material history
I have been to auction the other way round - I once saw two women bid up a costume jewellery lot which was clearly 3 x gold plate necklaces (probably jeweller's necklaces) as I had picked through it with my magnifier as well - and they battled to $300
even the auctioneer was stunned!

You will have a ball.
Yes, you will need a passport, but not a visa.
Can't wait to see your pics now.
Keep us up to date with cruise date and ship name, when you have confirmed.

The Dawn Princess was the first ship we cruised on. Still have fond memories of that cruise. It has been revamped now, so should be even better. Yes, it is a bit smaller than some of the others, but I had no problem with sea sickness. Try and get a cabin that is midship, that will help.
When you come back, you go through this sort of downer. Having to cook and wash up again, it's a real drag. :(
They say you put on one pound for every day you are on the cruise and that worked out about right for me. So start your diet now. :)
thanks Steve
the travel agent lady said to the hubby to try to get mid ship
I also need room - too much togetherness could test our 30 year friendship
but the hubby is very active so he will be in the exercise classes with the leotard ladies, whereas I will definitely be in the shops!! so we should get some space
oddly I feel very excited as I had written myself off from every going o'seas
we will go down to the travel agent on Saturday
I printed of the start of a passport application - tearing the house apart in search of my birth certificate .... must be here somewhere .... ha ha

If you want extra room and you can afford it, book a suite or a mini suite or at least a balcony cabin. You can do it all online too, no need for a travel agent.
'booked' today!!!!! yay !! :yahoo: deposit in 3 days
11th Nov for 14 days round trip
a little bit forward from midship in a mini-suite as all the mid ship rooms were booked - port side (voyage goes up from Dunedin)
they offered complimentary upgrade but for the moment we declined as we have a confirmed room and location
I am soooo totally nervous and equally as excited
better get that passport organised
thanks guys as I had never thought of a cruise until I started reading about the adventures of forum members here

That's fantastic. I'm glad you took the plunge.
Watch those upgrades. We got upgraded to a huge suite overlooking the rear of the ship. It was a magnificent stateroom, double the size of others and a huge balcony, but it moved around bit and you had more drone from the engines. The mini bar, canapes and fresh fruit were all included. It didn't worry me too much, but the wife got a bit sea sick. What made it worse, was that we told them we did not want an upgrade. We only found out about it on the morning of departure.
We paid about $4000 for the cruise and the wife checked the price of this room when we came back. She said we had a $15000 cruise.
Anyway here are some pics of this stateroom...

wow! looks fantastic indeedy
yeah - the rear rooms looked to be on the possible upgrade on the deck plan
I did wonder about engine noise (and maybe exhaust?) and possible movement esp. if the seas are a bit rough as the rear of the vessel should dig in a bit for stabilising (I assume - no engineer here)
my only sea experience has been going out to sea when I was younger on a fishing trawler
although I hurled all the way out and all the time there and all the way home - I absolutely loved being out in international waters and always felt awesome being out in the what seemed like the middle of the ocean
but I always found the rear of the vessel more 'wobbly'
I will keep on eye on the upgrade bizzo
ps
we think that we have booked this room
I called the lines and the call centre guy was fairly certain that we would be getting this room?
I hope so as I'd love to wake up to seeing the ocean from my bed!
whereas you guys got 'the penthouse' suite (according to my deckplans)
That room looks great. I reckon you will have a wonderful time.
Just about take bets that this won't be your last cruise either.
I did make a mistake though. It was the Pacific Dawn that we first sailed on, not the Dawn Princess. The upgrade we received was on the Sun Princess. Our Stateroom was C746, on deck 9 ... http://www.princess.com/deckPlans.do?shipCode=SP
I just checked all the other decks and it looks like we had the biggest room available. Didn't realise that. I feel special now. LOL
aaawwwww
lucky you two :)
we will see how I go
I might freak out when I realise that I am in the middle of the tasman and no way outta here !! ha ha
might get a valium script or a big bottle of brandy ... 'for me nerves' ha ha
it's funny we keep meeting up with people for example who we know through work etc and every single one of them has been on a cruise and all have said that they are just great (probably because we are talking about a cruise)
so there ya go
and I think it's almost surreal
got 6 months for it to sink in
I reckon I will plan something every day until then as well
already reading the menus and looking at on board activities
although honestly, I am happy to snuggle up with the hunny hubby and just enjoy the romance of being on a 'love boat' together (ex ... the possibility of the two of us taking turns at hurling in the bathroom ha ha)
ok birth certificate NOT found - ripped the house apart, found lot's of other interesting stuff along the way (aside from the birth cert.)
ordered a new one, got it today & did the passport piccie $15 (or so) (EEK I look awful) paid my $250 for mr foreign affairs and trade
so my trip 'over seas' well and truly gonna happen yippie
deposit done and now have the cruise password for the excursions etc - golly .... exy
I watched that carnival spirit ship getting tossed around last week in that storm off NSW ... bit nervous
got a prescription last week from the GP for sea sickness
really excited but still have half a year to go ... :)
golly could get myself a couple of nice 1934/5 florins with the costs but hey - I need a holiday more than I need a florin
That's why I like cruising to foreign countries, I can have a cruise and find some coins too. :)
Maintain the excitement, it will come quicker than you think.
So where are you off/cruising too?
just New Zealand Goldie - 14 night cruise ex Sydney and back - very first trip overseas ever ever - very first cruise ship ever ever as well
I am very excited - I am researching every night
triggermob - I have a small back of NZ money that my daughter gave me as she goes over there with her work at times
so I think I have about $20 to spend up big time! ha ha

trip to airport was a bad start, got the cheese and kisses up at 5am to get to the train, said ta ta ,up on station platform (country trains) a recorded announcement " due to track .... etc " train was cancelled . brazenly called home and got her out of bed again to run me down to penrith (suburban line)..
needless to say "not happy jan ":diablo:
anyways waiting for connection at L.A.:yahoo:
These things can happen from time to time. Frustrating aren't they.
Du gee your wife sounds just like me. I feel normal!
Passport arrived today
It is really going to happen!

Are you getting excited already? :)
give us a squize RG :blush2:
ha ha I am excited
maybe a bit scared ... never been overseas at least the kiwis speak englush (and beautifully so)
the odd day trip out to international waters but that was eons ago
nah AJ - it is just a passport but a very legal document so no photos being posted here on a forum
and my photo is a shocker!!!
I nearly cried ... no wait ... I did ...
worth a shot but didn't think you would because everyone always says that about their photo's :)
yeah and then I compare it to my 'passport' photo (for my Judo log book) from more than 20 errr almost 30!!! years ago and I feel depressed with a capital D~!!!
I don't look that 1986 person any more boo hooo
I look like a 2015 nannie - that is cool too

Well that's just bloody lovely Jeff! no comment :)
Yeah ya look a little different now RG but that pic could have been taken any time as people still have the same style :) yeah it's cool 'cause your cool...for an old girl :good: show Mr RG this and tell him that your still
yeah AJ
we all change with age, the hubby constantly reassures me that he thinks i'm bootiful enough for us
and I am glad that I still have that photo as I really don't have all that many photos from all those eons ago
I have kept all my uni and work id photo cards so I have a pretty neat collection of face shots over a few decades - once the 40's kicked in it was a downhill run!! ha ha
anyways I loved that shirt and eventually wore it out
haven't a clue where the earrings ended up either
like the more recent photo I had to take my glasses off so I was having a bit of trouble seeing!! ha ha
but yep - you asked for a passport pic - well ya got one!! albeit an old one
I was just stirring as usual but thanks heaps for being a good sport and playing along with me :friends:
:( I can't even see the pic. :(
Quote from: 'Triggersmob' pid='72726' dateline='1432119203':( I can't even see the pic. :(
that's cause I deleted it
felt a bit silly being all nostalgic and so on mate
silly me, got to let some things go!!
So true
Just over 2 months to go Robbiegal.
Are you getting excited or nervous?
pretty nervous
but have been so busy at work that I haven't had the energy to think too much about it
I start leave at the very end of this month so then I might have plenty of time to FREAK OUT ha ha
Whatever you do, don't Google "Cruise horror stories".
I did like this one from '11 Scariest Moments on a Cruise" site.
3. Kate
Most disturbing moment for me on my recent cruise out of Long Beach was in line waiting to board. A 70 something white haired man decided to lift his shirt and expose his pasty pale white fleshy chest and belly – and his shiny new gold nipple hoops. EW! Took several cocktails to rid my mind of that sight.
Yes, that was the third scariest horror story.
:laugh2:
wasn't you was it Jeff :blush2:
good on him!!!
you only live once
I'm gonna miss ya RG :cray: but mate I reckon it'll be fun :yahoo:
only 2 weeks ... off line
will i cope????????????????????????? ha ha
might re-discover my real self
:scratch_one-s_head: So who is the real RG :winkextra: Two weeks may as well be an eternity.
the real me is free
and doesn't worry all the time about recruitment, managing the budget and keeping that on track, getting up every day to face the meetings, the complaints, arguments with the doctors about what my staff are or are not doing but never forgetting that I work with a fabulous group of staff who make it all worth while
.... the real me will be sleeping, enjoying good food and cuddles with the hubby
smelling the sea air and looking out for dolphins
maybe getting a sea borne massage ($170 mind you!!)
have a tinkle on the pokies
and swim in the pool on the ship (after the kids have gone to bed)
and maybe even catch a tan!!!
OR
otherwise I will be hurling in the cabin and spending 14 days in bed ... sea-sick ha ha
:laugh2: see and this is why I'll miss ya mate :friends: Either way it goes it's got to be better than all the stress for a few days so rest up big time and don't do ya arse on the pokies :winkextra: or if you do make sure it's with Mr RG's money :mocking:
:(
he has run out
paying thousands off a darn uni course that he had been doing
I actually loaned him money on the week-end ha ha
I shouldn't grizzle
I am happy that I have a job
but after a bit more 30 years in the game I am getting over it
Yeah that's a long time doing pretty much the same things, so I bet your looking forward to your long service and lucky to get 10 years out of a job these days so you've done really well :good:
you are always so positive AJ - thanks mate
i'll try to get you something in New Zealand
I wanna go to a zoo and see a KIWI
be happy if I get to do that (and have my feet on dry land!!)
I'm impressed that you've been at the same job for so long, it really is a credit to you mate :)
Take me with you, I promise I'll "try" and be good :winkextra:
Sorry and no offence to any kiwi's here but you could go to the gold coast, bondi or perth seem to be a few of the major hangout over here :) or you could visit two of my cousin as they hooked up with a couple of kiwi's ;)
I just think this trip will be a really blast for you and Mr RG and will probably make you think about taking a bit of long service, my advice is take it while you can and while your still young enough to enjoy it :give_heart: I'm sure the job will still be there when you get back as it's hard finding people with that sort of experience so they'd be happy to have you back any time :good:
A few pic's of the trip would be awesome :yahoo: don't think I'll ever get to do any travel out side of oz so I'd love for you to share the experience :friends: and yes there's a lot of native birds that I'd like to see from over there (the feathered kind) and other hehe :blush2:
I'd love to see a Kakapo in the wild. I've seen a few Nature programs that touched on them, and they seem to have so much 'character'.
Yeah too right there's some really lovely birds alright and also some real bastards I'd like to see like the Kea, just so destructive.

yes, we are just about to work out our overnight stay in Sydney and I think it really hit me when we were talking about that
very nervous but also very excited
I have been hitting the house & yard and attended to grandma duties
so my long service leave has been tougher than being at work!
packing the suitcase tonight
gosh what should a girl take for a 14 day holiday???
or to maybe quote my husband who hasn't said it but I reckon he is thinking it
what SHOULDN"T a girl take in that suitcase!!
ha ha
nervous and EXCITED
packed my small binoculars and sea sick pills & loupe - just in case I happen to find a coin shop somewhere
think they are more important than my 6 pairs of shoes ...... maybe
Have a great time Robbie and like I said before, don't pack to many clothes there is a laundry on board. :)

Some ships use coins in the machines, on other ships you use your cruise card to buy tokens and use them in the machines.
Have fun. :)
Safe travels Robbiegal.
Have a nice trip RG!
Robbie , when we went on a boat cruise a few years ago , we got the cabin boy to do our laundry for us and we payed him cash ..
thanks Kel - the hubby is most worried as he is such a washing fuss budget - I will tell him about that
Have a great time...
All the best RG, have fun !

Hi guys
I'm back (got back home o n Tuesday and have finally unpacked)
Had an absolutely fantastic trip
The hubby quickly mastered the laundry, watched what he ate & went to the gym everyday and didn't gain an ounce!!
I mastered the dining rooms, didn't go the gym and gained just over 2 kilos!!
Well worth it.
Sitting in Auckland harbour about to board the ship.

Welcome back RG!!!
Glad to hear you had a great time (top photo too).
some snaps
this is what I was on that big ship for - to cross the Tasman by sea
just fantastic
the only time I felt nervous was with the daily weather report from the officer of the bridge and each time he'd say HOW deep the water was
i.e. cruising speed 22 knots, water depth 12,000 feet
eeeekkkk freak out - my heart skipped a beat every time!

Yep,welcome back from me too.
thanks everyone
yes we are looking at other trips (bank account pending!!! ha ha)
it was a great way to travel overseas with that being our first time overseas
after seeing other peoples cabins I am so pleased that we had a balcony room
nothing nicer than having breakfast on the balcony in the high seas
total blast & being able to open the door for fresh air when feeling a tad queasy!

yes the hubby did a first time ever helicopter ride in the bay of islands
and after that we heard about the shocking crash in the south island
our kids were a bit panicky
I had calculated the risk and noted the abundance of vessels in the area so I figured that if it went down on the water a rescue would take place quickly
no I didn't get in the thing!! he almost didn't but eventually climbed on board
(http://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10035/thumb_PB200579_1024.jpg)

Nice pictures of the ship. Is it the Dawn Princess?
If it is, one can see the window that was part of our cabin on our last four voyages combined as one.
Of course it is. You can see the name on the front view.
P&O Five Ship Spectacular in Sydney Harbour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bK6wmt7vB0)
My eyes are not as good as they were jeffh.
Robbie, my first flight in a helicopter was in New Zealand. About 20 odd years ago, I won a work promotion and went to Queenstown on the South Island. We landed at Queenstown air port and were transferred to the town by helicopter, via flight over the top of the Remarkable Mountains. The next day we took another helicopter ride up river so we could raft the white water. It was all very awesome.

yep yep Goldie
the Dawn
apparently small by todays ships standards but jolly big enough for me
I don't catch lifts - so 7 floors of 16 steps each level and multiplied several times a day was enough for me!!

:i_agree: Absolutely!!!! What a great combination of lighting.
I took me little pal Tigger with me
and took a snap of him on the balcony at most of the ports
Tigger had a great time - he lights up the ceiling with stars at night time & he is my bed time pal - so he just had to come along for the trip
(http://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10035/thumb_PB160013_1024.jpg)
these are the ships life boats that they use to transport passengers onto the jetties in bays that don't have ship's docking
the passengers get into them and off they go
guess who dropped her coffee over the side of the balcony - with the boats and people loading up directly below!! big oopsie but we were so high that I think the coffee only landed on the balcony below (well that was all I could see anyways)

no

I have done many laps around that same deck and have done several trips in the TENDERS between ship/shore/ship.
The Dawn Princess may be getting long in the tooth but the 1950 odd passengers that it can/will take is enough for me particularly when one has to get a raffle ticket to get ashore in the tenders.
She has two sister ships. They are the Sea Princess and the Sun Princess. The Dawn will be transferred to P & O in mid 2017 for what reason, I can't tell but maybe with two almost new big ships arriving in Australia under the Princess flag may have something to do with it.
I spent many hours at the stern of the Dawn, on deck seven looking at the turmoil of the sea from the propellers. Absolutely mind boggling. The noise was terrific and only wish I could listen to it more.
I had most of my meals on the last voyage of 72 days up in the Horizon Court buffet. Only had four or five meals in the formal dinning room.
Will get around to post a few photos of our last voyage soon. (One person keeps asking for some).
good review Goldie
"I spent many hours at the stern of the Dawn, on deck seven looking at the turmoil of the sea from the propellers. Absolutely mind boggling. The noise was terrific and only wish I could listen to it more."
I understand that - I spent a lot of time there as well - took a few videos but can't load them here
we have no complaints what so ever
we had most of our breakfasts in the Horizon court - boy they put on a feast there!
We don't use the formal dining at all. Only ever use the Horizon Court.
I just love the freedom to choose what ever I feel like eating.
I know what you mean with the wash from the propellers too.
I could just sit there and watch that for hours. So relaxing.
Can't wait till our next cruise.
beaut photos
My Wife and I are are heading out on our next cruise later this week.
Sailing out of Sydney for Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
I won't be contactable for about 2 weeks.

I see that the Dawn Princess will be a P & O Ship next year with a name of Pacific Explorer.
have fun Trigger
we are talking about another cruise - might even do the Tasmania trip
we were in B330 & loved the large room although spent most of the evening time at the fine dining, the 'disco' Jammers, and the piano bar - but had plenty of room to give each other space if needed
we did take in a late night movie on our last night - it was windy and cold and we pretty well had that side of the deck to ourselves!! (wonder why!) - finally got to see minons ha ha
I think I am hooked!!

Better than falling down them.
Anyway you have an excuse, the stairs move on the ship. :)

But 'slide nights' should be banned (unless plenty of high quality refreshments provided).
My wife has just booked our next cruise. Brisbane to Singapore via East Timor for 15 days. At $1999 per person for a mini suite, it was too good to pass up on. Also get about $900 onboard credit and free cool drink package. Sailing 4th Feb 2017. Counting down again. :)
Lucky ducks! You've worked hard so time to look forward to a nice break.
Call in here on the way home Steve :)
Ahh, there you go again Steve......abandoning your fellow knights and knightesses in the heat of summer. Go ahead, have fun with cool sea breezes, sunny skies, a large amount of ship's credit and free cool drinks. I guess we're in another world trying to collect coins by trading, bidding, and outright purchasing while you and your wife have a merry old time. We'll try to forget your action, but this is the last time.

Says he, who I first met when he cruised into Fremantle. LOL
Hopefully we will have great time, but I'm expecting it to be hot and sticky.
One downside is that East Timor uses USD for it's currency, so I'm not expecting
to find too many, if any, new coins. :(

down the hooghly river - murishdabad* to kolkata
well
its not up there for its good looks but the service and food was first class
only 12 cabins/24 ppl but we had only 14 ppl making a small but eclectic mix of poms and aussies
due to the low levels of water we ran aground 3 times !! luckily the last time a tug boat was nearby to haul us off.
on one of the groundings they jettisoned some water (thank heavens it was not the beer!)

You lucky stiff Duggee, that looks super relaxing.
I can just imagine you sitting up on the top deck sipping on an icy cold beer watching the sights of India slowly slipping by.
What a great choice for an overseas holiday , it most certainly beats a trip to Bali with all the crowded bars and beaches :good:
my son spent a couple of weeks in Timor-Leste the year before last and had a great
he went on a photography trip
the abject poverty was a shock to him but he really enjoyed the trip and wants to go back again

I think the young ones can really be affected by the poverty (well, the ones who experience compassion)
for 4 people after 3 weeks of up to leh in kashmir in himalaya, down to and all-round rajasthan, delhi(pop. same as oz!!) taj mahal , 2 x tiger reserves, varanasi... by internal flights , o/night train, and mostly by traveller van(8 -10 seater)incurring some longish days as roads are crap with obstacles such as cows, dogs and all types of vehicles travelling on the wrong side of the road...mind you there are no rules!! they leave their luck in the hands of the many gods they have.. was a bit stressful at times..certainly enjoyed that beer at days end
getting on the boat for 5 nights was awesome as we could relax more and with some side trips topped off a hectic and in your face at times experience

Looks good Kel,
Murishdabad was part of India when the British were in India.I don't think it is on the Hoogly river but connected by way of tributaries which flows into the Hoogly, the latter then flowing thru Kolkotta(was Calcutta!).
I dare say the food would have been sumptuous to say the least and entertainment top class but bawdy! They would have had a Anglo-Indian or Goan dance band who really know how to jazz it up.Worth a trip I reckon?!! Running aground is common place!!
Will see if I can find any of those coins for you?the kangaroo spewing on the others back?!
Trust you are both well and enjoying the slightly cooler weather?
God bless,
Glenn
I think Goldy should be getting excited about now.
Around South America cruise starts soon.
Have a great time mate. I am jealous. :(
Yes, excited isn't the word. I am calm and not looking forward to the flight from Melbourne to Sydney on Wednesday morning. I just don't like flying.
We are off for 84 days come Wednesday morning on the Sea Princess. One can track the cruise by going through Google and looking for the Current Position Of Sea Princess.
We return on the 05 Apr so it will be a long absence for me from the forum.
Take care all of you whilst I am away and I will try my best to post in the forum whilst away if I can pick it up at sea.
So till 05 Apr 17, have fun people.
Hope you have a wonderful time on the trip Goldie.
Pedro
Sorry everyone else. All sold out! Sydney To Valparaiso Crossing (http://www.princess.com/find/cruiseDetails.do?voyageCode=C703F). And, obviously, more if they don't get back until 05 April!
Did you get the premium drinks package at no extra cost? Recent mailings we have had offered that for cruises exceeding seven days.
If you want to follow Goldy's trip, you can follow the ship here....

Signing off now till 5/6 Apr 2017.

Goldy has finished visiting the islands in the Pacific, with the last one being Easter Island.

i feel loved
Well I'm back and not such a good cruise this time.
First 6 days were OK, but then I came down with a very
bad dose of gastro. Had trouble eating and drinking and
became severely dehydrated. So much so, that I had to be
put on a saline drip. Medical bill was $680. Also missed 3
of my shore tours, including East Timor, where I was hoping
to get lots of coins. Spent 4 days quarantined in my cabin.
Spent a couple more days recovering and came good by the
last day. Spent some time in Singapore, so we got to see some
goods sights there. Now I have to make a claim on the travel
insurance. Don't leave home without it! ;D
A couple of pictures ...

must be horrible to be at sea and have gastro as well Steve
which cruise line did you travel with?
did they make your wife stay in quarantine as well?
Thanks Steve. I love Cockatiels, they're fantastic little birds. Got 2 Greys at present.
Did you get sick on the ship or was it a result of something that you ate/drank while ashore ?

Fortunately the seas were fairly calm, so no sea sickness to go along with it.
We cruised with P&O. Not to happy with the service on board

Fairly sure it must have been from the ship.
We hadn't been ashore for 3 days by the time I got sick.
It was really horrible too.
I was so bad, that I was sitting on the toilet and passed out.
Woke up when I threw up on myself. Did that twice. Then I had
to clean up the mess. It wasn't pretty.
Final diagnosis was acute gastroenteropathy due to norwalk agent.
This would suggest a non bacterial virus, but they told me it was bacterial.
So really non the wiser as to what caused it.
Sounds bad mate.. sorry to hear your story.. its bad enough getting sick. It worse when you get unwell during a holiday..

Sorry to hear that,Dec.-Jan. has been a bad period for Cruise Ships in Australia, lots of Gastro. in varying degrees of seriousness.
Reports of Hepatitis on a Ship in Melbourne this Morning.
Some,i stress some, of the Indians(Goa?) working on those Ships worry me,despite regular Training their personal Hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.

I got $430 back on my travel insurance today. :)
Only 3 more days and our friend Goldy will be back from his cruise.
That 84 days sure went fast. :)
It will probably take Goldie a few days to get his Land Legs back after nearly 3 months at Sea
That has gone fast. I hope it went well for him.
Good to see you back posting again Goldie! Hope you had a wonderful time!
Yes, I/we are back from our three month cruise. Arrived back on the 05 Apr 2017 and I have yet to get my land legs back.
As I'm type, I can still feel the motion of the Sea Princess, rocking and rolling around.
We hit the tail end of Cyclone Debbie after departing the Bay Of Islands in NZ and we had winds of up wards of 120kph and all outside decks were closed off.
Good to be home again and now catching up on a lot of entries on this forum.
I will be sending a few PM's re coins that I was able to secure/not secure.
Just in time for the new Woolies collectibles.

welcome home bruce , good to know the trip went well .
Yes I had a good time if you count 90% of your time, flat out in your cabin with a skin infection that I am still being treated for.
$2,012 worth of doctors bills on board the ship and still going strong with a dertmatitis specialist on Friday. Still not over it.
Had a skin itch before we boarded the ship and I still have it now.
Hope it goes before the next voyage planned for 2019........
Humm mm
I only been on one cruise but oddly I had a really bad skin infection in my foot when we got back. I had to take antibiotics for quite a while.
I hope that you get over this .

Sorry to hear all that, similar drama, i had friends come back from a Cruise about 2 years ago with a bad rash, like German measles but local Doc. said it wasn't,"ït was some sort of allergic reaction" but they both had it.Cleared up in a Month or so after a bit of Aussie Surf & Sun but its the last Cruise they're going on.
In my case it was suggested that perhaps I had just a tiny patch of skin damaged on my foot and maybe going into a spa or the.cabin spa bath may have been enough to let in some nasty bacteria. I thought I'd injured my ankle and bandaged it but by the time I was home in canberra my whole foot was imflamed and swollen. It did settle with two boxes of antibiotics. Was odd indeed.
Yes allergies can like measles. Could have even been something as simple as the bed linen laundry powder.
I hope you're OK in the long run gold ie
Confined to quarters for almost 3 months doesn't sound like fun at all
It would drive me nuts!
Robbiegal: I wasn't confined as such. Just didn't feel like scratching my pelvic and crutch area in public so remained quite low for a long time. I did get out and about but not as much I should or have liked to.
The itchiness eventually turned into scabies and a mass of hives arounf the waist, crutch and pelvic areas.
I had to go through five total cream ups from neck to toes and then had to have all my and the wifes clothing totally steam cleaned four times with the cabin being sanitised and fumigated three times.
I am still under treatment now with tablets and more creams. Looks like it is going to be another couple of weeks till I am totally clear of this thing.
That sounds pretty awful Goldie. Hopefully you are rid of it ASAP and can get on with planning your next adventure.
Pedro
OMG
Sounds horrible
I once got something like scabies after stating overnight in the three ways motel in the northern territory a million years ago
It was awful then and I still remember it
I hope the ship.might compensate you somehow if it was picked up in the ship
Bird lice are also ikky - we got very itchy from that down at a local swimming pool also about a million years ago too. The birds were in the awning
ps
which cruise line were you with?
i might just give that one a wide berth ..... (pun intended)
Princess Cruises. But I doubt if the medical problem was caused by anything that was on the ship.
I think it started before we departed and it is still on going.

Yeah,i saw a grab on the TV News about a Week ago, apparently one of the Melb. Law Firms are launching a class action against Carnival(?) as almost every Cruise has seen an outbreak of Norovirus.Whatever the facts the Cruise Lines are in damage control and it will take more than video of a few Indians walking around with antiseptic sprayers to gain Public confidence.
Hope you are Ok now.

Quote from: 'redlock' pid='114098' dateline='1518170272'Oh Steve, Sorry to hear that. Could you still pick up some coins?
I bought dinner at a hamburger joint on the night we reached Singapore.
It cost $19 and I received a $1 coin in change. You beauty, a 2017, just
what I needed. Slipped it in my pocket and that's the last I saw of it.
Must have fallen out somewhere. Cambodia and Vietnam don't use coins,
so none from there. Malaysia and Thailand use coins, but I didn't get a
single one. I had some $2 notes from Singapore left over at the end of the
cruise, so I asked the girl at Starbucks to change them to coins for me,
but all the coins I received I already had. Only other coin I came back
with was a 1983P U.S. quarter, which I already have as well. :(
