Title: NZ 1953 Proof set
Post by: trout on February 12, 2015, 07:23:09 AM
I bought these on a "Whim".
They came in a case similar to the 1966 Aussie Proof sets and are toned and have the "Obligatory" Cabinet rub associated with coins stored in this manner But I quite like them all the same.
Not every day you can pick up a 1950's proof set for $130 :)

So here they are "Warts" and all :ok:

By adding the individual coins prices in my 2011 NZ Catalogue (no prices listed for Proof coins at all), this is what I come up with. So even although Catalogue prices are usually inflated, I'd still say you have picked up a real bargain. Well done! :yahoo:

AU - $285
Unc - $585

According to the catalogue, the Crown is a Coronation Commemorative, and I think it's a lovely coin. .

Good buy, a later version of the one I have, same Author.

The info in them is fairly basic, but I s'pose for a country as small as NZ we can't expect too much more. :winkextra:

Is this the same John Bertram as the Australia 2 yacht designer ?

Wouldn't have a clue, my Book doesn't have his name on the front, just the Author, Anthony W Grant.  :dontknow:

There's a full page advert for John Bertrand (Collectibles) inside the back cover with a NZ PO address in Wellington and a full page Order form elsewhere in the book.  Nothing further known about him, but I wonder if  he may sponsor the production of the books now? :scratch_one-s_head:

Get this set graded Trout, there are only 3 sets in PCGS.. you can reach no 1 position easily..
