I'm thinking about retiring and dealing in coins full time.
Somebody once said that if you love what you are doing you will NEVER spend a day at work.
I have been working since I was 15 and I turned 60 last year.
All of my occupations have been "Hard Core" and tough going (except for 6 years in the Army) which was a bloody holiday compared to the rest of my working life.
Farming, fishing, mining, and mining shutdown work is pretty tough going and quite frankly I have had a guts full of it especially with the New generation of workers that wouldn't work in an iron lung.
The 8-9 Months a year I am away from home at the moment is a "Bummer"also.
Time for a "Sea Change" I recon. :yahoo:
I'm NOT thinking about opening a B&T shop but doing business on line and selling via Numisbid, eBay or consigning coins to B&T dealers.
Any advice from the members here that deal professionally would be greatly appreciated.
My intention isn't to compete with you Guys, I would much rather work with you.:ok:
I think you would love it Trout
and I'd say you have had enough experience to do ok with an ebay shoppe
my only neg. comment is that you have integrity & heart , so you'd be at a disadvantage compared to many many other 'successful' coin sellers , so I don't think you'd make as much profit as some ...
go for it son
you only live once

I don't consider having "integrity & heart " ( and I thank you for that comment) to be any disadvantage at all .
I know for a Fact that PP and Mark run the same way and are doing "Just Fine", I couldn't operate any other way.
I'm not talking about making "Squillions" here just enough to keep me in Fags and beer while having a good time doing what I Love :)
I have thought about the same and done some work on setting up a business... however due to work comments and my financial situation have not gone ahead with it... I agree with you... if you do what you like, its not a job !
Go for it I say !
ditto for me as well ausproofs
I say go for it if you can trout
and yes, there are some fine professional coin dealers here in this forum
GO FOR IT!
Let your dreams come true.

I have "Procrastinated" about doing this for years, About time I Hardened the ---k up and did something about it.
If it all turns to Mud I can always go back to work :dash1::dash1::dash1:
I hope that never happens as I have stashed just over 30K away to use as capitol simply to have a crack at this and would hate to loose that and have to go back to working for a living for the next 5 years until I can claim a pension.
Thanks for the encouragement you Guys , Much appreciated.
You Blokes/Gals are Fecking AWSOME

Just be careful with your money, have a busuness plan and execute mate... looking at the current Australia TPG graded coin market, its a good time to enter and slab any decent coins you can get your hands on... there are so many coins out there that are untapped at the moment. .. all you have to do is get hold of 10 good coins ( 10 top of the POP or similar) and you will make your money.
My theory is we have not seen the best yet... time will tell...
better be quick
I think Steveo is snavelling them up at a rapid rate!!
The guy that started Newcastle coins was a member of a previous forum & he had the same ambition.
So I say go for it, you should do well.
Good luck & I really mean that.

Due to the education I have grasped from many people on ACF and CCF I am now quite confident that I can pick the winners from the lemons (Geez that was an expensive education), All is good and I am quietly confident about my grading abilities Now and the information that I pay for will hold me in good stead in the future.
I am Really Looking forward to this new venture :yahoo:

Gee Trout I had some horrible visions when I read the thread title
Good luck with your venture!
Pedro
Good luck with it. Im no expert but have learnt some things in trying to get started. Sounds like your not shy on hard work, getting started can be more a mental game rather than physical. An online presence doesn't come quick, easy or cheap. To become well known takes time. Its easy to let the dealers know who you are but the buyers are a different story. Some may like you and others may not and others just don't care. Have a business plan, be different, offer something that others dont or not many do. Feel the waters with your toes before you take the plunge. Be prepared for set backs. The best are the best because they don't stop at the first hurdle, They keep going. Most of all remember it is better to try and fail then to fail in trying.
I say go for it and best of luck with it.
good for you Jim , being your own boss is a big advantage in life , and if you are doing the thing you love , you are 50% in front of it ,
I have done lots of jobs in my life time , and only enjoyed a couple of them , but the best one was that I worked , when I wanted to and that is a big step ,and if you like what you are doing , don't ask for anything more . good luck mate . take care and we will all still be friends because you will still be on line . god bless .
,, kel and dawn ,,
My first few days on the job and I have been pretty busy.
I have listed 42 coins on fleabay, sent 19 coins off to numisbid (another 30 odd will be sent on Monday) and I have sorted out a couple of submissions to PCGS totalling 78 coins so far.
I have had a bit of a look through my odds and sods hoards and have found some interesting stuff in there as well.
I really have to do a huge clean up as I have stuff stashed every bloody where and haven't a clue what is amongst it.
That's in between carting water because Mrs Trout left the bloody tap on from the main Rainwater tank and drained all three of them :dash1:
We are now on scheme water until we get a summer storm or the first rains come :cray:
I'm having a lot of fun so far and I am considering asking the Boss for a raise, I recon he will tell me to bugger off tho
Regardless of what you decide, I wish you luck.

Trout what's your greedBay username?
"Pommystockman" :)
There's money to be made in buying coins raw, slabbing them and selling them but keep in mind that this is because there is only a small selection of collectors/dealers able to do this well. As we've seen with the American market, the number of the skilled graders will only increase in time which will bring down the premiums that can be made on slabbed coins, in addition the supply of gradable coins will only go down. As a result, this opportunity may only be short lived (although it would probably exist in other markets in the future).

Well it's best that I snap up as many raw coins as I can while
I have the finances to do it
I have to agree with you Walter , the Good coins are starting to get "Tough" to find.
Stevo has the right idea with sourcing from places other than Aus :good:

I like to play my cards pretty close to my chest Old mate so that sort of information won't be forthcoming, but thanks for the offer and your concern.

I do have a rather large Cache of stuff to keep me busy for at least 6-12 Months so I won't be panicking just yet and continue to buy conservatively and hopefully Wisely .
I started out 15 years ago selling off parts of my collection. It turned from a hobby, to a hobby business and then 10 years ago a full time profession that I still love except for the paperwork. It is a lot harder now than it was 10 years ago. The industry has changed. My advice is take the emotion out of buying and selling. This means telling people how it is and buying and selling accordingly. This way you will be greatful for the good deals and treat the deals that don't go through as just a deal not done. If you can walk away from a deal and both you and your customer are still happy then you will both come back and do business again. Being honest, being fair and showing respect to your customers is the way you will succeed. I spend a good part of my day giving advice to all that walk into my shop. Teaching people about this hobby gives me great satisfaction.
It will be tough but I hope you succeed and you find it as rewarding as I do.

Thanks for the good advice Shane , Much appreciated :good:
I have always been honest and truthful in my professional and business life because it is so easy to do and satisfying at the end of the day Because everyone walks away a "Winner".
I can and will "Walk" from a deal I am not 100% happy with, But that doesn't mean I will be out there ripping people off that have NO idea what they have, I cannot operate that way.
If someone comes up to me offering something that I know is "exceptional" I will let them know what they have/ what it is worth and either buy it so that I/they know I can make 10-20% on it and make the offer accordingly or simply sell on their behalf on a lesser percentage basis.
I have had many dealings with what I call trusted dealers because they are honest and truthful and I have enjoyed every day of it, That is why they are still in business .
I am as green as grass doing this and NO doubt I will "Stuff Up" at some stage, But as long as I think as a collector and provide a service accordingly I may just struggle through this and have some success :)
