Title: Red Poppy $2 Coin
Post by: Coiny Chris on January 08, 2015, 06:31:12 PM
Hello,

A few of us from work bought a number of the Red coins from a roll to share. Now one has some paint ? missing and still have to get a closer look to see it it was made that way. I had a look on Ebay, and saw an error Coin being sold for $65. Similar fault, what do you think ?

Re the Ebay coin, more likely the red was removed with the help of some acetone.

Have the coin examined under x10 or even x20 microscope and see if there are any small amount of colour remaining.

If there is, I will second Nevol's explanation.

Hello,

I had a look under Magnification. and it looks like there is a bit of paint on the edge, like there was a bubble. Remember, this was a Coin in a bulk buy, not bought as an error.

I have a friend who has hundreds of these. what he tells me is that the RSL put them aside from the rolls when they opened them and they couldn't put them for sale with the certificates. Just paint that didn't stick or something. He sells them for about $10 each to help make a few dollars for the RSL. I have 4 of them in my desk drawer here. I wouldn't pay anything more for them, they are not hard or expensive to get.

Goldseeker,

I will try. It with a friend at work. The funny story to it is I brought in the bag of 10 to give 2 to her. She noticed the missing paint, and decided to keep it when I offered to swap it for another. I think she didn't want to feel she was putting me out as I organized the buy. Then I said it may be an error and worth more, I looked it up and found a similar one asking price $65. So as it was worth more she wanted to swap it back ! I reckon she would be an easy mark to get ripped off, I always take in the receipt from a group buy. Like anything I look for a good price and only buy when everyone is happy. You will always find something a bit cheaper, a bit like shopping Hong Kong. When I was there 30 years ago anyway. But for a few Cents why waste days ?

Please keep in mind that I am not a photographer so you get what you get...  I did try to reduce them best I could as the larger format was too big for the forum to take....

Missing colours may well be a manufacturing fault in the colouring process but lets be realistic here ... they are not a real error coin and not worth a premium like some people expect

In my opinion, they are a "variety" coin.

I have just completed updating my "Variety" $1 Coins, IE Flaking planchets, cuds etc and to date I have 190 coins in two albums.

Well, no. If they were anything, they'd be flaws, as each is unique, as with planchet flaws and strikethroughs.

But they're not errors. The flaw doesn't occur during (or prior to) minting. It occurs during subsequent paint application. Or more likely, after, when the dry paint flakes off.

And that, technically, makes it PMD.

but if it hasn't left the mint then it isn't technically PMD?

Well, I wouldn't call it PMD if it didn't happen in the wild, but the purists will say anything after the coin is struck is technically PMD. Even doubling resulting from loose dies bouncing, since that happens a fraction of a second after the strike.

Hair-splitting, I know, but there's some validity to the viewpoint, even if I don't agree with it.

We all know these missing colour bitz n pieces are just a random event or PMD ... it's simply outrageous people try and profiteer by listing these on greedBay as errors for ridiculous prices

Hello,

People may list them, but not many would sell for the asking price. The worst part is others will see the asking price and think theirs is worth a similar amount. Cars can be bit like that, a Dealer has to guarantee title, do a Roadworthy and normally put it through the workshop. Faults are fixed, and it gets detailed. If it is a bad car, they send it to another Yard, not with their name on it. Some Cretin will see the asking price ( which will have a margin for bumping up a trade in price or Cash discount ) and price their Car the same. I remember looking at Utes 20 - 25 years ago with a mate, some we looked at were quite a joke. In the end we found one in the country, similar price but 10 years newer with far better extra's than the previous ones. It was a brand he wasn't looking for, but I said have a look anyway. He took it for a drive, looked at me and said Sold.
