I doubt if one would find a stash like that here in Australia.
That sort of find is a detectorists DREAM.

Oh I don't know about that, Some lucky buggers are still finding huge Gold nuggets with detectors and they don't have to share these with the Government either :)
Just saw the new article on this. Amazing discovery!

You won't find Saxon coins, but what about the Dutch and Portuguese shipwrecks? Grounded ships often buried their chests of valuables and sent out small boats to places like Batavia. If nobody rescued them then those chests might still be there. In NW WA there are signs that shipwrecked sailors left their genetic mark on the local tribes and there is the famous legend of a Portuguese ship in the sands of Warnambool.
Or what about bushrangers stashes? Might be boxes of freshly minted sovereigns, Adelaide pounds, early banknotes, Holey Dollars, gold mohurs etc.
A neighbor from a few years back did some metal detecting on some old known diggings in Victoria. Don't know exactly where, but he and a friend deliberately sought out areas where the Chinese miners vegetable patches may have been located. Apparently it was custom for the Chinese to keep their money in a pouch strung around their neck, and in the process of working and bending in the garden the odd coin would fall out. That was the theory, anyhow, they did find a small silver coin but can't remember what it was. Might have been 1 pea :laugh2::laugh2:
Pretty nice find. I know my grandfather when he lived back in Macedonia was constantly digging up coins of Phillip II and Alexander the Great as he worked on a farm.
