Post by: purplepennyhunter on September 09, 2012, 05:07:15 PM
It seems we have our first attempt at a spam registration.

Good, we do not need spammers here!

I am astonished that the spammers have found us so quickly. We're still so new we must still be all but invisible to the Internet at large.

I tried googling us, but no results.

Don't know how a spammer found us so fast. :scratch_one-s_head:

There were a number more last night, all gmail addresses, all nonsense user names.  The IP addresses were in China and Poland.  We've got a number of options to curtail this if it becomes a problem:

I saw the 3 earlier this AM.

I actually recognized one of them, Murazor from Poland,  He's a member of CCF, so I don't think he would be a spammer.
Too late now I guess, or can he be resurrected?

I guessed the 2 from China would be spams.

Do you run their IP's through a spam check and if you do, which one do you use?

Nope, no resurrections.  Could you PM him Nancy and get him back?  There's a number of spam checking tools built into this board and I've just been using those.

OK, shall do.  If I recognize any in future, I'll approve them after I check them out of course.

No can do, he has his email turned off on CCF.

Maybe Sapyx could contact him? :icon_idea: But only if it won't get him in trouble with Bobby.

  • Prevent registration of users with free email services like gmail and hotmail
  • Add a simple non standard question to the registration process (like what's 4+2) to stop automated scripts and bots signing up
  • Email all signups manually and only confirm registration when we get an answer from a real person.
  • Do nothing and keep monitoring signups and just deleting the strange ones

Out of these options, I would definitely use #2, and possibly #3, but it might become tedious if there are too many of them to deal with.  I s'pose we could give it a try and see how it works out.  I'm pretty sure that Barry emails new applicants of the KOTCT Forum, but not sure how long he gives them to respond, I guess 48 hrs should be enough.

Since he's already applied for membership here, I don't see a problem; I'll PM the e-mail address to Nancy.

But please be careful using the CCF PM/e-mail system for ACF purposes. Bobby has ways of finding out if people are doing that, and it would only take one complaint for this forum to find itself blacklisted like the KoCT forum is.

OK, I've set up the forum to ask a simple question when registering a new account.  This should stymie any bots or automated scripts from signing up spam accounts.  Of course if someone wants to register a spam account manually they'll still be able to do so.

I control membership on another forum and always check this site for spammers:

   http://www.stopforumspam.com/

Am I able to see who applies and would be happy to check for you.

On another note may not be online much over next few days.  My mother had a bad stroke yesterday and is in Hervey Bay Hospital so I have had to come up here to be with her and mu sister.

Hope I can check in at least once daily.

Sorry to hear about your Mum Barry.  I hope she makes a complete and speedy recovery. My thoughts are with you.

She is sleeping a lot but does not appear damaged anyway from the stroke.

A few tests and physio today and they will make a decision of what needs to be done.  They may move her from Hervey Bay Hospital to Marybourgh Hopital then give her some physio so that she can go home.   I do not think she will go home and will stay with my sister.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Many thanks for all of your messages.

She was a bit better yesterday but is still very tired.   Speech therapy and physio and her first solid (minced) food.

They are hoping to move her to a rehabilitation hospital within next couple of days.

Still away from home but may go back when she has been moved for rehabilitation, my sister will look after her.  I do not think she will return to her home and will stay permanently with my sister who will become her carer..

I've noticed a HUGE drop off in the number of spammers trying to register.  Good stuff Mark! :yahoo:  :wavemulticolor:

Yes, they seem to have mostly died off.  I'll ban any other individual email domains as they arise.  Right now I've been fairly heavy handed with the banning of domains and no-one with a .pl (Poland), .ru (Russia), .ua (Ukraine), or .in (India) domain can register.  If you happen to hear of someone (who is a real person) from any of these countries trying to register just get them to email me directly.

OK I've banned his IP address too.  IP bans are not wonderful because most ISP's change them all the time and spammers know how to spoof them.

As it turns out, coin guy must have been a spammer, 2 emails I sent both bounced as undeliverable.  One via the forum, one via my personal email. He's gone!

I'm not sure about e5pmatan.  Has 3 strikes against the IP. Geolocation resolves to Brisbane.  I've sent an email and will give 48 hours for a response. If nothing heard by this time Sun night, "ZAP!"
