Title: Two Dollar Varieties and Errors
Post by: caivel on December 16, 2014, 08:26:41 PM
I have a number of Australian $2 coins which I want to search for varieties and errors.  Can anyone suggest what I should look for - "IRB" initials types, big, medium and small heads, characteristic cuds, etc?

I'm only interested in die varieties so I'll leave the cuds etc to others.
The 1999 coins can have either a small or large head which can easily be determined by comparing the distance from the legend to the rim.
The 2001 coins can either have the IRB spaced, the I spaced and the RB joined or the IRB joined.
Make it easy for yourself and get something with some half decent magnification to look at the coins too.

Many thanks for the info on the die varieties - I have something to look for now :wavemulticolor:

• Die crack through the elder's shoulder.
• Rim spur next to the flowers.

And that's about it for errors.

The usual run of flaws of course, mainly strikethroughs.

Here's a list of most of the $2 Errors I have Images of.  There may very well be others, but I won't know until I've finished going through the rest of my coins.

There are heaps of Rim Cuds not on this list as they're usually pretty obvious and easy to spot, but if you'd like a list of them, let me know & I'll see what I can come up with. :winkextra:

Many thanks Nevol.  I assume your list are all diecracks.  I think I can spot Rim Cuds OK, so I don't need a list - thanks for the offer though:wavemulticolor:

I'd like to correct myself with the 2001 varieties - I think there are just the two: the I R B and the I R_B. The IRB which I thought existed was in fact the I R_B and what I thought was the I R_B was a die-filled I R_B.
