Title: Hyperinflation bank notes
Post by: kchan1111 on December 14, 2014, 09:10:11 PM
I have started collecting hyperinflation notes around the world as a theme. Here are a few. :ok:

Nice notes kchan!

I collect Greek Banknotes (1928-2001) and in 1944 they released a fair few hyper inflation notes up to 100 Billion. This period also produced a lot variants and duplicate serials.
Enjoy the hunt!

I bought a collection 12 months ago. Contained close to 1000 hyperinflation notes from South America, Africa, eastern block and Germany. The German government issued a lot of hyperinflation stuff but there is even more of that in notgeld hyperinflation issues. The German 1922 note you have is a notegeld issue by the Pheonix steel works in Hoerde, near Dormont which is in the Rhine region of Germany. The first German note you have is also Notgeld issued by the city of Trier which is from the Moselle region of German.

What I like about the German Hyperinflation stuff is the shear volume of notes issued. The German Government issued 10 billion notes into circulation during the hyperinflation period. This does not include notgeld issues which is estimated 100x this was issued by government utilities, towns and private companies. One town alone (the city of Kaiserslautern) issued 1.7 billion billion marks  by printing and issuing 3.8million notes into circulation.

That's an insane amount of money Bigfellani5. Thanks for the info. Can't believe even a steel works is issuing their own notes. There is a huge variety of Notgelds around with really attractive designs. I was hoping to go browsing at Wynyard Coins today for some more but there is an hostage situation nearby at Martin Place.

There is essentially 2 types of notgeld.... Hyperinflation stuff and small value stuff used to replace coins in a coin shortage from about 1918

I'm absolutely potty about the German hyperinflation notes. Unfortunately I can't seem to find them in bulk anywhere. I would kill for some of those stacks you see in photos. I know a lot of it was burned for warmth or recycled but there has to be more than a few loose notes around.
I always wanted to use them to wallpaper a feature wall like you've probably seen in old inter war photos. I would never do that to such great old notes but it would be pretty cool.

If anyone knows where I can find the notes on bulk I'd really appreciate it. Buying them in one's and two's when the shipping costs more than the notes seems silly.

I got my German notes from Wynyard Coin Centre http://www.wynyardcoins.com.au/. They had quite a few Notgelds and other German hyperinflation notes a couple of months ago.

Heritage Auctions had a batch of 500+ Notgelds on auction. I was sorely tempted but I wanted to save money for something else. But now I am regretting it. :P

I just had to post this on Reddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/2v0t5z/5_billion_a_year_inflation_you_call_that/

Can't believe it made it to the top of the front page when so many actually useful posts sink without trace.

One guy even posted a piccy of his. :)

Here is mine, probably just before the hyperinflation. the paper is corrugated, quite a pleasant feeling note with cloth fibres in the paper mix.

That 1000 Mark is a nice design, and would have been a small fortune in its day, before the inflation hit.

From 4 marks to the dollar to 4 Trillion! Ouch!

BTW, I just used that note as a history lesson for people who think currencies are investments:

Investment, like the first pound banknotes, or those of the Portuguese colonies, in high grade of course.

Very nice design indeed. Will have to get one!

I got some new hyperinflation notes recently... Croatia, Hungary, couple more Yugoslavia and a batch of Notgelds. Have to find time to take some pics on the weekend!
