Title: NSW Car purchase.
Post by: Coiny Chris on December 13, 2014, 07:17:09 AM
Hello,

I was thinking of a newer Car, found one in NSW ( I am in the ACT ) and the seller said it doesn't need a Roadworthy. I thought that you had to provide one to sell a Car, the Gov. Web-site was no real help here. Who has bought a Car privately in NSW recently, and what is the process ?

Hello,

As far as I am aware , in NSW you do not have to provide a roadworthy certificate to sell a car. However to register a car you need a pink slip. If the car is under 3 years old, you dont need a pink slip either.... Best you speak with your motor registry as ask them what you need if you buy a car from interstate...

http://www.act.gov.au/browse/topics/transport-roads-and-traffic/vehicle-registration

"Vehicle inspections are required for the following, any vehicle over 6 years old requiring a transfer of ownership, interstate vehicles transferring to ACT registration, when registration has expired by more than 12 months, defect clearances (unless directed to the Dickson Motor Registry), establishment of registration for a new vehicle. Fees apply. NOTE: vehicles over 4.5 tonne GVM, public vehicles, modified vehicles, imported vehicles or vehicles without compliance plates MUST attend the Dickson Motor Registry."

Fulvio,

Thanks for the link, but I must not have made myself clear. I want to retain the NSW Rego as I also have a NSW address. You always get ripped off trying to get a refund, so I may keep the NSW unless I can get ACT cheaper around renewal time.

I know that when I was living in  Canberra one had to change addresses and registration of interstate vehicles within three months of taking up residence.

Does that still apply today?

true - that additional info about just buying and keeping in NSW was not in the original post, thus other posters have assumed that you were wanting the interstate transfer info

Hello,

I was asking about the sale, not changing to another state / territory. Yes, I didn't make it clear, as in The Life of Brian, I am a very naughty boy ! When I typed it, I thought it was a simple question, but not so. It is always difficult to write things as you know what you mean, but for a reader it may seem to mean something completely different.

So, I want to buy a Ute from NSW and change the rego to my name with a NSW address. I have an ACT address and a NSW address. I am going for a look tomorrow, it is a somewhat rare model, and would suit me well. My needs have changed over the years and I think it is what I would quite like to have now.

So, please, tell us what model it is. Just interested.
You should have no problems if it has current NSW registration and you want to transfer it into your name at a NSW address.
If renewal of registration is nearly due (or less than 3 months overdue) then ask for a pink slip. If registration has lapsed for more than three months then you need a blue slip to get it re-registered.

Hello,

It is a Falcon RTV. Car brands tend to polarize people, but it would suit me well, it is a Tin back and runs on Gas. They sit over 3 inches higher, have a diff lock and wider track.

Nice choice of car.
It wouldn't be my first choice for a Falcon utility though,
this would be....

Hello,

An XY would be nice, a little hard to find a good one cheap though. As a youngster, I always wanted to fit the running gear to a ZD, and paint it bright Orange. Time moves on, and now an RTV has R and P steering, Air Bag / cond, ABS disc brakes. I reckon if you drove both, you would pick the RTV unless you needed to go serious places. There was also a Turbo AWD XF made, and some AWD AU's to test Territory running gear. The XY was released when the XA was out, delays with R and D, and the XA had frame-less windows. Now for some trivia, the XA ute used the Coupe door, different glass though.

Must admit I do like power steering these days. I think owning a XY Fairmont V8, without power steering, for 19 years, is what stuffed my shoulder up. Thanks for the info on the AWD's, I have never heard of either of them. :)

Hello,

You may have seen this site. http://www.truckjungle.com/2012/08/18/aussie-classic-xy-falcon-4x4-ute/ It has some good info about the 4x utes.

http://www.xfalcon.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5622-aat-twin-turbo-xf-spec-sheet/  I found this after a quick look. I remember at the time reading about it in a car mag, and the price I remember because I bought a house for less soon after !

And, still a few Holden Overlanders kicking around. Similar concept. There is a wagon just up the road from me and I see it around regularly.
Aussie Classic: Holden Overlander 4×4 Ute (http://www.truckjungle.com/2012/09/08/aussie-classic-holden-overlander-4x4/)
I have seen them in ute, wagon, one tonner and panel van variants. Never seen a sedan -only a photo and I wonder if someone managed to fit a leaf spring rear end under it or is it four link, coil spring?

Hello,

The Overlander was an aftermarket mod done in Tas if I remember correctly. They even did Stato's. Not what I want though. There has always been people Modding cars, but I like parts from a box and everything designed to work together properly. When you get on an odd angle, and EFI engine is still running the same as on a flat surface. I have thought about a Jap ute, but the engines can be very pricey if you have trouble.

Hello Steve,

If you would like some interesting reading, Google Brock Falcon. There were quite a number of Fords that had the Brock touch. And Lada's.

Hello,

Carsales I have been looking. They need a report thing, I got a bit excited and it was a normal ute. Listed as an RTV. What an Idiot. It makes me want to ring and annoy the stupid A Hole. I really hate the Ebay adds where they say not.... Always want to contact and ask are you stupid ? Not what you described.

Hello,

Bit of an update if anyone is interested. I got a BF regular Ute for a very good price. It drives well, and is a factory Gas system. Now I can finish some tasks that have been waiting. The Cat has no leaks, very common around 10 years and not a cheap fix. I almost got a tidy Ute from a Dealer, but it had a leaking Cat and he fibbed a bit too much about it. I was after a Tin Back with Air, which is only 25 % of Utes. The Auto is noisy, but I dont drive very far, and I took this into account with the price. Now I have to get my GF's Dog used to traveling in the back. He tends to thrash around, and I dont want him to jump off and choke on his collar / lead. Dogs do that. He lives with me, as I have a larger yard, and before her house was finished she was in a no pets rental. He is a great companion, even if he can be a bit of a pain at times. I have changed his behaviour, and as he is aging I want to take him out on more Camping trips and other things outdoors while he can enjoy it.

QuoteThe Auto is noisy
There is a common conception that Falcon auto boxes tend to die after about 150,000km. That is usually because the owner never had the gearbox 100,000km service carried out.
It is not actually an expensive service and easy to DIY. Basically draining the fluid, dropping the pan, cleaning out any visible muck, reinstalling the pan and filling with new fluid (recheck level after a trip around the block). Make sure you get the correct type of ATF.

Jeff H,

The noise is 1st gear, which is a known fault in some. My EL is about 260 and I give it a bit of a hard time. I am going to retire it soon, as it has a few other issues. Sounds like a leak near the Cat and some other things. I have gone with a newer Ute, as I needed a Ute more. Cars are now almost worthless after a few years, I cant believe how good Cars that are scrapped or abandoned are.

The fact that Falcon is the choice of Taxi's says a lot about how durable they are. I have had 1 bad Falcon, many Commodes and never a good one. I went off Fords after an XF, and given different Fleet Cars, I now only want Falcons. Rear drive and they suit local conditions. You dont need the date and time it was made to buy parts, mot people know how to fix them and plenty of cheap 2nd hand parts around. Try getting Parts for imported Cars, not much stock here in Aus. !

We have a BA now but previously had an EL. Still see the old EL around town occasionally and going strong -well over 300,000km.

I am with Jeff on the gearbox oil replacement - definitely do it.
If you do it yourself it is not much money and (unless there is a failure from the existing noise), will make the box last much longer.
If you have ever changed engine oil, you should manage this too.

The problem with Falcon Trannies are the models with no dipstick, many just don't get regular service because of the cost, most owners don't feel comfortable getting under the car to top up the fluid & those that do often have it on ramps and overfill it because of the angle.

I have been selling car parts for 36 years and over that time, I have come across many mechanics, that recommend, that if the fluid is still good, i.e. still red and not burnt, that you don't need to change it. In fact some auto fluids are good for the life of the car. What I can recommend is Lucas Trans Fix, a product used by many of my customers, with good results. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8pURv8C1Wg
They make one for power steering too.

Yep,also the rear seal starts leaking(also on Holdens) around those K's and owners continue to drive them with low oil levels that will stuff the Tranny eventually.

Hello,

Thanks for the tips guys, I will chase that up later. It is nice to drive, my GF likes it and she has an XR6. Now she want to borrow it ! Mind you, pavers and sand would not be a good thing in the boot.

As for the no dip-stick on the Auto's, that goes back over 20 years to the EF IIRC. It may mean some people have to take it to a dealer, but it will stop ruining it with the wrong fluid. Some people also have no clue even with engine oil. An add oil light would help. Many years ago my then GF and a housemate changed his OIl. They broke the switch terminal off, and didnt tighten the filter correctly. Seized it driving to work. I got him an engine for $285 and put it in. Over 30 years ago mnd you, he got a $50 discount as I was already buying an engine for my Car. The days of the cheap Jap imports. Not always a bolt in swap either, a few traps for the new players.

Hello,

The Ute is going well, the Dog seems OK except he went off his tree when we drove on dirt. Not sure why, I hope he gets used to it. There was a storm coming, so he came back in the Cab. ( was OK there ) I have bribed him with food, and a swim. He loves the water, not rain or the hose ! I want him to associate the Ute with fun trips, has started to work as he jumps in the back. At first he pretended he couldn't. A very anxious Dog. We have 2 leads which keep him close to the middle, and he normally looks out the passenger side. My GF can talk to him to reassure him through the window. Seems to settle down. We stop for him take a Pee, and on longer trips, as previously we carry some water and a bowl for stops. 1/2 hour max.
