Title: 2005 Double Struck $2 PMD or Genuine?
Post by: purplepennyhunter on November 24, 2014, 09:58:53 AM
eBay link (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Error-2005-Australian-2-Two-Dollar-Coin-Mis-strike-Circulated-Very-RARE-/171553568124?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT)

Seller has made contact with us regarding his coin. At first glance Mark and I are certain it's PMD. The reversed incuse DOLL on the reverse and partial incuse backwards 2 on the rim and the flattening of the coin on the obverse indicating it was manufactured by being hammered by another coin. Cannot however see why the reverse design shows two 2's which might mean there's some part of this mash-up that's genuine.

What do others think??

That double "2" does look genuine But the rest of it looks like PMD.
Maybe someone wanted to make the coin look a bit more dramatic and in the process has ruined it .

if that is double struck then I am a magician.

Examination of the coin indicates to me that a third strike is apparent.

No way is that genuine and I am no professional error identifier.

Leave well alone.

7 bidders on it so far, crazy!

Vise job for sure, but don't know about the 2 x 2's. Maybe what Trout said.

I dunno, I can't see that much deformation from a vise.. I'd like to see the edge.

Still, for it to be legit, it would have to have been struck at least 3 times, normal, failed to eject, restruck, and struck again against another flipped coin.

Can't see it, somehow, so I'm with trout I think.

Yes, that was about the only thing I could come up with.

It would have had to have stayed stuck on the hammer (obverse) which you would have thought would have prevented a new fresh reverse being struck, ejecting and flipping properly. (Insert "The chances of anything coming from Mars .......")

Jury is out in my head.

Edges would be interesting.

Well I don't know a lot about the way this type of thing happens, But I like to collect mistruck coins and was hoping this coin would get a mention here. I have many mint error coins, and after studying this coin, and taking the comments here into consideration, I definitely would not bid on this coin, way to many unexplained theories.

You don't have to hope something gets a mention in this forum, tezza.  Jump right in and do it yourself!

Lots of threepence blog information
is the coin from one of those auction lots

It's not one of those coins, the seller has just copied my information (breaching copyright).

It looks to be a double struck coin (based on the two 2's) that's then had a shed job whack with another coin (incuse reversed design and obliterated obverse) but I am at a complete loss as to why someone would do such a thing.

I wanted to give the seller a more definitive answer.
