Lot 90 $1 mule estimate $200.
I'm sure it will go for a lot more.

Low estimate so people think they have a chance of getting it cheap and then they get caught up in auction fever and potentially bid high

The estimates are extremely low. I think this indicates that the market for coins and notes has been in decline for some years now. They need to put low estimates to attract people to bid.

On the other hand when the market is booming they put high estimates and everyone gets swept up in the excitement and bids despite the ludicrous prices.

I have a friend who values & grades lots for auction house/s
The commission/fee for service for this work is only based on the estimate that the auction house lists the lot for (not the sale price or 'value')

Lot 90
Sale 107   Mis-strikes
ELIZABETH II, one dollar, 2000, struck with obverse die for ten cents. Very fine.
Estimate $200
SOLD $450

Yeah Stevo, saw the selling price and had a squizz at the cattledog. No doubt one would have had to have seen it in hand as the pics were (well to me at least) at bit hard to discern any damage/grade.

Hey Guys & Gals, Mules seem to have taken a beating across the board over the last few months, great time to buy a higher grade one if you have the $$$'s but bad time to sell.

Was watching when that one went through, and it was enjoyable to sit a watch the auction live. I didn't bid live, but had placed a bid earlier on the Mohur with no luck. :cray:

Whoever did the grading (and/or typing up the catalogue) wasn't paying attention for this auction. Lot 546 is 1918I and 1926 bothIndian dies:huh: and lot 547 is listed as No Dot when it is CBL and Dot Below (I can recognise the particular die pair and dozens of mine have a visible faint dot).
So if I can spot a few mistakes in coins I know then how many other mistakes are there in coins I'm a novice at?

maybe you should get a job with them then

for the external grader who I know
they send  the coin
he grades, verifies and values
and then sends them back
not sure if you also have to set it up in the auction presentation sleeve as well or if they do it

then you send it back and you get a fee for service paid & to my knowledge it is a % of the listed estimate (not the valuation that you give)
it is really an external verification of the coin, type etc
I doubt if those coins would be the sort they'd send out

but anyways - worth a thought
others here might know how to get that sort of numismatic work

There would have to be a lot of trust with the external valuer

Quite a few pics were out of focus.
And the photo resolution (500 x 500) has never been good enough anyway.
For expensive stuff its poor I reckon.
I bought a few half sovs and paid well over estimate.
Hope they are OK...

My guess for that 21 halfpenny is 63RB.
Maybe 63+
I almost bid on it myself.

Thanks Dave it is always hard to nail down a grade from their photos so remote bidding will always be a gamble especially when there is stiff competition and you end up paying over the odds

echidna did you win the 1891-S Choice Unc 1/2 Sov with the $1000 estimate?

That coin was a stunner, I put it at MS62+ in my books (commercial UNC Victorian half sovs are rarely MS slabbable so a 62+ grade is incredibly high).

It sold for 2 or 3 times the estimate though still a good buy.

I have never seen one in UNC.
Even at MS62 I'd value it much higher.

I bid for the first time with Noble this week.

I was disappointed with the experience as I felt the postal bidder's representative often calls out the bidders maximum bid rather than letting the auctioneer start the bidding at or below the estimate and letting the demand determine the price.

I just felt they didn't look after the interests of postal bidders. Can anyone comment on this?

I have noticed that as well.It is a bit unfair and they shouldn't be doing it

I suspected the same after hearing a couple of opening bids that were way above the current starting point following the end of preliminary internet bidding. It flys in the face of what is documented on how the bidding will be progressed.

I had placed an early internet bid on one lot of which I was the high bidder at the completion of the preliminary round. Didn't see how the live bidding ensued, but I didn't win the coin and was the underbidder. Sure does put a bad taste in the mouth to think they may have submitted my top limit as the opening bid, not that it matters greatly on this occasion as I didn't win the coin. But if that one person who wanted the coin more than I did had not bid, I was gauanteed to pay an amount equal to my upper limit.

Not happy if this is what is happening.

NO shenanigans like the Noble auctions :good:

Most public auction houses start bidding at the highest bid of the highest postal bid, in my experience only Edlins (and Numis Bid) do it properly (start at one step above the 2nd highest bid and bid on behalf of the postal).

You won't regret it, I dropped out at $2500 as I wanted a fighting chance on the pre-decimal proofs. I won the 1864 1/2Sov which I rated at AU58 - I'm guessing I got that cheap because the obverse is softly struck.

There is often dodgy stuff going on with such auctions.
And they treat most bidders very poorly.
I have had shocking experiences with these big auction houses.
But at the end of the day they have the best coins.

Got a couple in the latest Nobles auction.
Including this nice half sov.
To their credit they took a return on another item that had been badly cleaned.
I dont trust their grading 100% and the pics are not the best but good to know you can send it back if there is a problem.
Far better than some of the other auction houses that are a "House of horror" when it comes to returns.
Cant mention any names of course...

"Most public auction houses start bidding at the highest bid of the highest postal bid, in my experience only Edlins (and Numis Bid) do it properly (start at one step above the 2nd highest bid and bid on behalf of the postal)."

This is fraud in my view. It's not a tender, it's an auction, and postal bidders are entrusting the auction house with the confidentiality of their bids and expect to pay what the market demands, not simply their highest bid!
Title: RE: Noble Auction
Post by: wwwww on December 15, 2014, 12:50:11 PM
Aside from the legal aspects, it's bad business in my opinion. If they bid at the highest level of postal bidders then postal bidders will need to keep their bids conservative to avoid paying too much resulting in an overall lower realisation and less income for them.

It's a great old thing, I can actually work on it and fix it most times, unlike the chip controlled flyers of today.
