so I got this coin the other day and noticed a planchet flaw. after a little "gentle" persuasion I got the "clam" to open. question is should I break it in 2 or keep it together? what has the greater value?

A Shakespeare quote twisted around :)
Get the hacksaw out and finish off the job :yahoo: only joking , i would leave as is .
Leave as is.
It is a miracle that it didn't split completely in two when you tried to open it.
problem is it doesn't fit in a 2x2 now :(
onto ebay it goes
Put it in a flip jewellery ring box and leave it as is, no more poking it!
Looks like the 2 halves are bent. That lowers their value as split halves. Better off leaving it as an open clamshell.
good idea, i will look out for one at garage sales
I just put it in the silver cabinet on its side as a talking piece. I have also listed it on ebay for a stupidly high price. if it sells then i have more money to spend at numisbid. if it doesn't then i keep it. no biggie for me either way
I think you have done quite enough damage to that coin already looking at the dents where you have bashed it.
I imagine that when you got this coin it was a bit like an oyster breathing/feeding and had a definite split but only slightly open.
By "Forcing" this IMHO you have damaged the coin (Much like cleaning it) and have forever devalued it.
IF you do achieve the ridicules price on eBay could you sleep at night with a clear conscience , I know for sure I couldn't
actually the coin was mostly damaged like that when I got it, it certainly isn't a mint state coin. I simply inflicted large sudden temperature changes causing a minor hairline crack to increase then gently pried it open. I actually expected it to fall into two which would have gone into 2x2's and my error file!
"IF you do achieve the ridicules price on eBay could you sleep at night with a clear conscience , I know for sure I couldn't Angel"
what does that mean? should I sell it for 10 cents because that is all it is "worth" I did my research and split planchets do sell for good money.
I went through 10s of thousands of 10c coins before I found this one, the cost of finding one is far more than I am asking. But it isn't my target item when I noodle so I want to sell it. yes I sleep with a clear conscience, but I wonder sometimes how you can take this line when you have sold incuse 50's for hundreds if not more when they have only cost you 50cents. it seems a bit hypocritical

Lets get one thing straight here, I DO NOT NOODLE I buy coins with the hope of getting an exceptional one .
YES I did do rather well with the incused coins I have sold But only after giving PCGS a "shake up" to get these coins recognised and properly attributed.
This has also assisted other collectors to re assess their coins values and has had a positive effect for eBay sellers of this particular coin.
BTW that MS62 coin I sold for $1250 was listed for 10 days and I got it for about $60 My top bid was $800 on that coin :ok:
I knew what I was bidding on and took a calculated risk, At the end of the day I came out a winner.
I didn't know the seller and have NO remorse about the buy .
ok so your not going to withdraw your comments I think it needs to be said.
I have traded with every person on their terms on this forum.
The people I have bought coins off have got exactly what they asked for the coins.
I have helped people to obtain mint rolls independent of me "reselling them" at a profit.
I have bid on members ebay sales higher than I usually would because they are members here and many have seen higher prices for their items because of it, yourself included.
I have taken advantage of no one here and find your attitude surprising and hurtful trout
serial you have buggered it up unfortunately
if this was a mule no one here would care if I sold it on ebay for this much.
or do you mean the coin runway? in that case I thought that it was just a scratch on the side at 1st it was that fine but then I thought it might be a split planchet hence why I encouraged it to split open. I really thought I would end up with 2 halves
I read on www.australian-threepence.com how it is done and thought I would do it and this was the result. I didn't think it would destroy the value of the coin.
either way it is in the silver cabinet and isn't in a hurry to go anywhere
Please keep your comments and criticisms under control and keep things civil. On one hand it is Serial's coin, on the other we are all members of the coin buying community Serial and we are entitled to an opinion on what you've done to this coin and the manner in which you are selling it. Both sides of the argument need to control themselves.
I have edited my post just to keep the peace :ok:
If you think that I am going to apologise for standing up for a Mate, Then you are barking up the wrong tree with that idea.
OK, I've deleted the last few posts that are nothing more than bickering. If it continues I'll lock the thread.
I had a few of these a few years ago
they are an interesting error that I often suspect is mostly not an entirely natural occurrence
regarding values, I sold this one for about $35 or $40
it was still joined about 3/4 split but I didn't tinker with it at all
it was how I picked it up at an auction
a member here bought it of me, so maybe by now it has fully separated

That's a nice one RG. PPH and I picked up a number of them (in Canberra I think) a few years back, all for <$50.
probably from the same collection
I found a few split planchets a few years ago, maybe early 2000s.
All were 20 cents and all were taken to with a screwdriver to finish splitting them.
Yes, I know better now, but I wasn't big into collecting then.
I haven't seen one since.
Of all the coins I have recorded as noodled, I have never found a split planchet.
